Writing To Learn11 reviews
William K. Zinsser

Collins, 1993

The Perfect Complement to On Writing Well
I read this book for both its subject matter and the bibliography. Zinsser leads the reader to good writing in the literature of mathematics physics and chemistry and more from disciplines thought of as other than suitable for writerfs. Zinsser shows by example that writing is not the sole domain of the humanities but across the spectrum of disciplines. He builds the case for writing across the ...

The Art and Craft of Children's Writing by Connie Epstein
This book is an indepth look at writing from an editor's point of view. I found it very helpful.

Inventing the Truth: The Art and Craft of Memoir, Revised and Expanded Edition8 reviews
Annie Dillard, Russell Baker, ...

Houghton Mifflin, 1995

So you want to write a memoir?
Memoir writers Russell Baker, Annie Dillard, Alfred Kazin, Toni Morrison, and Lewis Thomas share their thoughts on writing memoir. The chapters are taken from a series of talks given on the subject. The authors point out that memoir is not biography. The hardest thing about writing memoir, they agree, is not deciding what to put in, but what to leave out. They point to Emerson, Thoreau, Twain, ...

Writing About Your Life: A Journey into the Past9 reviews
William Zinsser

Da Capo Press, 2005

First rate
Zinsser weaves "how to" tips and discussion into his own memoirs. His section on cutting a broad project (write about baseball) down to manageable size (Pirates in spring training) is excellent for its step-by-step thinking process. He offers equally good thinking on many other things that can cause perplexion.

Easy to Remember: The Great American Songwriters and Their Songs6 reviews
William Zinsser

David R Godine, 2006

Can I give it a "6"?
What a wonderful book! This is a book I wish I had written, if only to write the sentence "Seeing Guys and Dolls on opening night in 1950 was my nirvana as a musical comedy fan"! It's one long love letter to the great American songwriters, both composers and lyricists: the oft-written about Kern, Hammerstein, Berlin, the Gershwins, Porter, Arlen, Sondheim, Lerner, Loewe, Ellington, Rodgers and ...

On Writing Well: An informal guide to writing nonfiction151 reviews
William Zinsser

Harper & Row, Publishers, 1976

Very insightful.
This book is a good read and offers some solid advice. It doesn't teach writing, but rather offers tips to keep in mind while writing. I feel that some parts of the book are hypocritical, especially when Zinsser uses some tougher vocabulary, but you cannot expect a teacher, writer, and editor to write a book in "see spot run" style, which is what I'm discovering to be the basis of the negative ...

Going on Faith: Writing As a Spiritual Quest

Da Capo Press, 1999

Going on Faith is an expanded version of Spiritual Quests (1988), a collection of essays--originally a New York Public Library lecture series about religious writing--by David Bradley, Frederick Buechner, Mary Gordon, Hugh Nissenson, Allen Ginsberg, and Jarozlav Pelikan. This new edition coincides with what the book's editor, William Zinsser, calls "a new interest in matters of the spirit." Its list of contributors has grown to include Hillel ...

Mitchell & Ruff: An American Profile in Jazz3 reviews
William Zinsser

Paul Dry Books, 2000

an overlooked classic
This book is a masterpiece. Zinnser delivers what is perhaps the archetypical story of the development of serious American artists. Zinnser is one of the most talented and overlooked writers, and he tells the story of Mitchell and Ruff with humor, clarity, and intelligence. If most books about jazz and jazz musicians were this good, we'd have a whole subset of profound literature based on the ...
