The Otterbury Incident, ("An adaptation of the French film Nous les gosses.")7 reviews
C Day Lewis

Viking Press, 1949

Classic mystery adventure for 8-11 year olds.
This is a charming and exciting book for children in upper primary or intermediate grades. Special appeal to boys particularly those in that " soldier" stage of development. This was read to me as a child and I have read it to my children ages 6 and 8 . Full of action, suspense and humor. Frankly, one of my all-time favorite books. Would make a wonderful movie!

The Collected Poems5 reviews
Wilfred Owen

Chatto and Windus, 1963

Harrowing beauty
War and poetry- two concepts infrequently mentioned, much less allied, in the same breath. Yet during World War I a number of writers took the horrific experiences of the Western Front and turned them into some of the twentieth century's finest, most disturbing poetry. Among these "war poets", Wilfred Owen is indisputably one of the greatest. From the opening declaration " Above all, I am ...

The Aeneid (Oxford World's Classics)1 review
Virgil

Oxford Paperbacks, 1998

1950's Verse translation
Cecil Day Lewis's translation verse has a lucidity and swiftness that keeps the story moving. C. Day Lewis was a student of Jackson Knight and translated the Aeneid in the early 50's a few years before Jackson Knight's famous Prose version. It was originally prepared and translated for a public broadcast, and so some liberties have been taken by C.D. Lewis, but overall it carries much fire ...

Nicholas Blake (pseudonym), C. Day Lewis

NELSON DOUBLEDAY, INC., 1961

Twelve Nigel Strangeways Mysteries in Four Volumes
The poet Cecil Day-Lewis (1904-1972) gained fame under the pseudonym Nicholas Blake for his stories involving Nigel Strangeways, a fictional poet with a penchant for solving murder mysteries. These well-constructed mysteries are noted as much for their witty dialogue, character development, and psychological complexity as for the puzzle itself. One reviewer observed: Blake will always be a writer ...

The poetic image (The Clark lectures given at Cambridge in 1946)1 review
C Day Lewis

J. Cape, 1955

On the wings of Poesy
This is a very rich book of poetic criticism. It focuses on the role of the 'image' in poetry. Much of it focuses on a reading of English Poetry with great emphasis given to the Romantic Period. Lewis understands the importance of Poetry's transformative emotional power, and this brings him close to the Romantics. He too considers questions such as the way the Imagery of a Poem brings it to a ...

Aeneid. Virgil (Oxford World's Classics)
C. Day Lewis

Oxford University Press, 2008

The supreme Roman epic and the greatest poem in Latin, the Aeneid has inspired many of the great European poets including Dante and Milton. The Trojan hero Aeneas, after surviving the sack of Troy, makes his way to the West, urged on by benevolent deities and following a destiny laid down by Jupiter, but harassed and impeded by the goddess Juno. He wins his way to Italy despite many trials, of which the greatest is the tragic outcome of his ...
