The Fountainhead (Centennial Edition Hardcover)967 reviews
Ayn Rand

Plume, 2005

More traditionally novelistic, tells the backstory of Atlas Shrugged
This novel predates Atlas Shrugged, and sometimes reads like a prequel telling the backstory of John Galt's life before he went on strike in Atlas. In its focus on individual characters, it sharpens the picture of pain and painful consequences to significant choices that drive the character's in Rand's objectivist world, so in some ways is more interesting and readable than Atlas Shrugged. It ...

Rand is a great author
This is a short story, very easy to read, with a powerful message. A cross between Logon's Run and Brave New World. Highly recommend.

An Excellent Collection of Essays on Ayn Rand's Political Views
This book contains an excellent collection of essays on the political branch of Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism and is appropriate for anyone seeking to obtain a deeper understanding of her political philosophy beyond reading her novels. A few of my favorite essays contained within include: * What is Capitalism? -- Ayn Rand's delineation of Capitalism as a political system where ...

The Liberal Journal?
I am a great fan of the writing of Ayn Rand. I was very surprised when I looked this book up on Amazon and found, by way of description, only a review of the book by The Liberal Journal. Anyone with the least sense of logic and awareness of what Ayn Rand writes about should see the glaring flaw in offering a review by a group that represents the antithesis of what Ayn Rand stands for as a ...

For the New Intellectual: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand (Signet)54 reviews
Ayn Rand

Signet, 1963

A new philosophical highway vs. old philosophical cul-de-sacs
Ayn Rand presents her philosophy as an alternative to the two philosophical cul-de-sacs, which have dominated the field and every other branch of knowledge in modern times. This book opens with a fifty-page essay, which delineates the two most prevalent approaches in the history of western philosophical thought to the nature of man (ethics) and social organization (political philosophy). ...

The Romantic Manifesto43 reviews

Invaluable and irreplaceable
When discussing the theory of art in Outdoor Monuments of Manhattan: A Historical Guide, I cited only Ayn Rand's esthetics. An early reader suggested I "balance" the presentation by mentioning other writers on esthetics. But here's the problem: no one surpasses or even equals Ayn Rand in the field of esthetics. Rand treats art with the same rigor she applies to metaphysics, epistemology, ...

A Timeless Warning
Pay no attention to the negative reviews, Anthem is pure genius. A timeless warning to humans not to give into the slavery of collectivism, be it of the socialist or mystic variety, and to cherish their individual rights and freedoms. Freedom is a central theme, with clarity that freedom is freedom from men. This book should be mandatory reading for every high school student. The basic ...

Brutal, Sincere, and Maybe Rand's Best
Sometimes, after finishing a book, I feel deep within me that it is important that other people read it, too. I'm sure you feel the same way. We The Living is such a book. I can't say whether it is Rand's best fiction or not... certainly a better read than Atlas Shrugged or Anthem, but The Fountainhead looms large in my memory, and might still claim the throne. However, I wouldn't feel it ...

Atlas Shrugged1546 reviews
Ayn Rand

Plume, 1999

Written in the 50s and is coming true today.
I am a fan of Ayn Rand and enjoy all her writings, so I am biased towards her works. With that said... Atlas Shrugged tells the story of the producers versus the takers. Through 1168 pages of small print, Rand gives example after example why the industrialists should be praised and not vilified. Rand also explains that all workers have value, if they are doing the best they can, at the jobs ...

buy it!
Of course the book is a little overdone. But I found it refreshing to read this that book celebrates individualism in a world that sometimes celebrates collectivism.

Ayn Rand Answers: The Best of Her Q & A11 reviews

NAL Trade, 2005

The Genius of Ayn Rand
This book is a good clear and concise guide to Ayn Rand's thoughts on a variety of issues. From taxes to ethics to Ernest Hemingway to capitalism to homosexuality, Rand forthrightly, clearly and honestly answers many questions put to her. This book also cleared up many questions I had about Ayn Rand and this book solidifies here as the great intellectual and philosopher she was. While the ...

Atlas Shrugged: 35th Anniversary Edition17 reviews
Ayn Rand

Those who preach selflessness do it for selfish reasons
In today's political clime Rand's writing is must reading. We are currently experiencing a resurgence in the war on the individual, with Hillary Clinton dropping quotes right and left that sound remarkably similar to statements made by Stalin and Lenin. Enough is a enough. Those who preach collectivism are trying to subjugate you. Those who preach altruism typically have their hand in someone ...

Atlas Shrugged: Centennial Edition14 reviews
Ayn Rand

Plume, 2004

One of The Great Novels
I first read Atlas Shrugged almost 30 years ago on the advice of a friend, who described it as the best book he had ever read. I also found it to be in that class. It had a profound effect on me. I was moved by it toward a (even more) conservative view of politics and econimics, to the extent of becoming a little too "mean-spirited" and maybe a little paranoid. I realize now that Ms. Rand ...

Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand (The Ayn Rand Library, Volume 6)78 reviews
Leonard Peikoff

Plume, 1993

Thought Provoking and Refreshing
This book is on the Modern Library's Top 100 Non-Fiction List. It places #3 on the Reader's Choice. As someone who admittedly has not read a trememdous amount of philosophy, and this being one of the first books I've read about Objectivism, I thought it was an excellent introduction to the philosophy of Ayn Rand and I look forward to reading more about Objectivism and philosophy in general. ...

Anthem (Reissue)
Ayn Rand

Coyote Canyon Press, 2008

Written with all the power and conviction that made THE FOUNTAINHEAD and ATLAS SHRUGGED classics of American letters, Ayn Rand's ANTHEM is a hymn to man's independent spirit and to the highest word in the human language -- the word "Ego." ANTHEM tells the story of a man who rediscovers individualism and his own "I" It is a world of absolute collectivization, a world where sightless, joyless, selfless men exist for the sake of serving the ...

What Can One Person Do?
This is the title of Chapter 17. Chapter 1 is that one that got me hooked on this book as it offered a clear structure of philosophical concepts and practical applications of them that we all experience. My father complains that he doesn't have the vocabularly to debate the socialists we all have to endure. I suggested to him that he has the vocabulary, but not the structure and gave him this ...

Barbara Branden's Passionate Biography of Ayn Rand
Barbara Branden was associated with Ayn Rand from 1950 until 1968, when she and her husband had their tragic split with Rand. In 1986, she published this biography of Rand. In light of the split between the Brandens and Rand, I don't think anyone would claim that this is the "last word" on Rand. Yet it is a well researched biography based on approximately 200 interviews of people who knew Rand ...

Plume, 1990

Excellent and Incredible
At last the the seemingly un-tractable problem of the Universals was solved by Ayn Rand. Here in this book it was brilliantly elucidated how the concepts can be based on the observed facts or how the observed facts can be explained through concepts without any ambiguity.Concepts can be formed realistically i.e., with reference to ACTUAL referents and without any recourse to either mystical realm ...

Loved it
I only wish it lasted longer, I read this in about 30 minutes. I had first heard of this because I am recent new fan of RUSH, and their epic masterpiece 2112 is loosely based on this book. I loved it, I can see it being a hard read for younger people but I still recommend it to anybody.
