A Nice Collection of Sailing Stories
The author David Gowdey presents a 282 page collection of 25 sailing stories, weather guides, interviews, and poems - all of interest to sailors or people wishing to read about sailing. The stories are not really related to one another and as such this is not a compendium of stories that teach you how to sail or to be a better sailor. Rather it is a loose collection of interesting short stories ...

Emotionally wrenching but very highly recommended
Flawlessly translated from the original Portuguese by Gregory Rabassa, My World Is Not Of This Kingdom is a major literary work by Joao de Melo that revolves around the history of a village in the Azores in which nigh-mythical figures live such as Sara the Saint, Cadete the Healer, Barbaro the Pilgrim, and others. Shock, emotion, the press of ruling authority, and harsh choices that divide make ...

An important contribution to Cold War History
CONFLICTING MISSIONS is a brilliant, impressive, and important book. It not only teaches us about the dramatic differences between US and Cuban policies in Africa during the Cold War (until 1976), but it also stretches our minds to see the Cold War "from below." Virtually all Cold War history has been written from the US (or Western)perspective, based on US archives. Gleijeses is the only ...

Excellent reference book on Azores
My wife and inlaws are natives of Pico, Azores and I purchased this book as reference material for a upcoming family trip to Pico. We all found valuable information in the book and my inlaws even learned a few things they didn't know about their homeland. Well worth the money. Strongly recommend buying the Azores road map too.

Great map, don't leave home without it
I purchased this map along with the Brandt travel book on Azores. Together they make a great combination. The map is very detailed and easy to read. Only drawback is size once unfolded. I actually wish this came as 2 separate maps so the overall size would be smaller.

Great, only Guide
Nothing about the Azores islands is what you would expect. They exist in the middle of the Atlantic where there should be no land. Their culture is European, the flora Asian, the terrain a wild meeting of volcano and sea. And, in the midst of these nine Portuguese islands, one finds a common volcanic past, and very little in common. This is the perfect guide, it has all the info you need. Fist, ...

Written by the "Hand of God"!
It takes consideration of both Predator *and* Prey to understand the drama inherent in a natural Life. This well-written (in English!) and beautifully illustrated book, "Twice Round the Loggerhead" makes an excellent effort to bring those elements to the reader, using Azorean shore whaling as elements. This book is a treat for those interested in maritime history, wooden boatbuilding (at ...

"The universe is made of stories, not atoms." - Muriel Rukeyser. This book's beautiful and well chosen cover immediately caught my attention as did the title. After opening the book and reading the quote in the preface and the dedication I knew this was the story for me. Jose Luis da Silva's description on the back cover gives a good overview of the story. Around the world in your kitchen
I bought this book out of curiosity and I am glad I bought it. It's the sheer variety of food, cuisine styles, ingredients. They come from all continents and latitudes. Most ingredients are easily available from large supermarkets or specialist shops. There is a list of mail-order sources, but they are in the United States. The glossary helps in more than one way. I couldn't find morcela but the ...
