Bangkok Babylon: The Real-Life Exploits of Bangkok's Legendary Expatriates are often Stranger than Fiction 7 reviews Jerry Hopkins
Periplus Editions, 2006
Brings me back to Bangkok I lived in Bangkok for a year and experienced many of the things written in this book first hand. Fortunately my wife is Thai and explained a lot of them but this book goes the extra mile and is an interesting and fun read.
It's easy to be a "fish out of water" in Bangkok if you're not familiar with the customs and etiquette. This book is highly recommended and Vermonter dot com approved!

The Fourth Watcher: A Novel of Bangkok 16 reviews Timothy Hallinan
William Morrow, 2008
"The Thin Man" of Bangkok - Poke Rafferty I love Poke Rafferty and his beautiful wife and child. I was pulled into the first book which was haunting to me . . especially since it coincided with not only the trial starting of the Khmer Rouge camp monster BUT ALSO the capture of a child molester monster in Thailand. 2 very dark subjects that somehow were eventually eclipsed in the first book by the human perseverance and sensitivity of ...

A Nail Through the Heart: A Novel of Bangkok 18 reviews Timothy Hallinan
Harper Paperbacks, 2008
Darkness and light in Bangkok I've written four novels set in China, and know a good piece of writing by a westerner about Asia when I see it. This book fits the bill perfectly.
`A Nail Through the Heart' is set in contemporary Bangkok. While technically a thriller, it is written with both the flair and depth that you would want from a `literary' novel. This is proper writing - it begins with a beautifully set scene: ...

Bangkok Tattoo 66 reviews John Burdett
Vintage, 2006
Another fascinating tale I've read several Burkett titles, and I'd recommend this one as a nice addition to his Asian tales. This would also make an excellent first selection to buy if it's your first taste of his writing. I admit my fascination with his writing has a bit to do with spending some time in Bangkok on business and sneaking out at night and tiptoeing through the jungle.
Having lived there for decades, ...

GROOVY BANGKOK MAP 'N' GUIDE 4 reviews Aaron Frankel
Groovy Map Co Ltd, 2007
Gets in the Groove This Groovy Bangkok Guide was brilliant. The reviews are to the point but also witty and I like the fact that the author lives in the city and has done all his life so you feel like he really knows where to go and whats right to do when you are in Bangkok. Most places are where he would take his own friends when they are in town. The best was the listing of all the shopping spots for stuff you ...

Bangkok 8: A Novel 142 reviews John Burdett
Vintage, 2004
A HODGEPODGE OF INGENUITY! Forget about whether or not this book accurately depicts Bangkok life, or is slanted by the misconstrued vision of the author. After all, it is not a travelogue, it is a work of fiction first and foremost. And it is a work of fiction of extreme ingenuity. The writer is highly talented. He is also highly complex, and so is his story.
And he is funny as all get out. I can't count the many ...

Nancy Chandler's Map of Bangkok 11 reviews
Nancy Chandler Graphics, 2008
Wonderful and colorful map! I am definitely glad we purchased this map of Bangkok before our trip. We used it help plan our itinerary and we used it frequently while in Bangkok. Nancy does a great job of telling local secrets and best options to choose from. It is very well done, up to date, very colorful, and I am 100% satisfied with the map. It is a little different than what I am used to, but it was a nice change. ...

Bangkok Haunts 49 reviews John Burdett
Vintage Books, 2008
Police Procedural - Thai Style Thailand, poverty stricken and seething with mysticism, is the brilliant setting for this police procedural - Thai style. When mesmerizing prostitute Damrong becomes the star of a well produced snuff film, Detective Sonchai Jitplecheep calls in his farang (westerner) friend - "almost" lover Kimberly Jones - to help him find the killer, and Eastern and Western cultures are brought face to face.

Wallpaper City Guide: Bangkok (Wallpaper City Guide Bangkok) 2 reviews Editors of Wallpaper Magazine
Phaidon Press, 2006
Different from Luxe City Guides, but less grating, too ... Reviewer "Ikat" has a valid point: the Wallpaper City Guides (WCG) are not comprehensive, and there is a bit of an extended travel magazine article aspect to them: however, I like WCG's differences from Luxe City Guides. Luxe engages in snarky comments and its prose (rather like a slick, smug club kid writing for middle-aged wannabee hipsters with bottomless pockets) is of a sort that I've ...

4,000 Days: My Life and Survival in a Bangkok Prison 68 reviews Warren Fellows
St. Martin's Griffin, 2000
One of the best books I've ever read This book was amazing. It completely opened my eyes and changed the way I think. This book is definitely not for the weak stomached but if you can get through it, it is worth every moment. A total page turner and a beautifully told tragic story.

The Gospel of Father Joe: Revolutions and Revelations in the Slums of Bangkok 11 reviews Greg Barrett
Jossey-Bass, 2008
outstanding An inspirational story of a man who saw injustice and does what he can to fix it. What makes his story fascinating is just how hard it was to do some good. Not impossible, mind you, but hard enough to keep most people from trying. His philosophy also strikes me as uniquely American. They need a school. Let's build one. Where do we start? Highly recommended.

Memoirs of a Bangkok Warrior: A Novel 13 reviews Dean Barrett
Village East Books, 1999
Moving and Humorous This novel is set in Thailand during the Vietnam War. It could be compared to MASH but I liked it better. I found it more moving and actually funnier. I loved the names of some of the characters as well as the scenes in which the enlisted men go up against the officers. A really fine read.

Escape: The true story of the only Westerner ever to break out of Thailand's Bangkok Hilton 5 reviews David McMillan
Monsoon Books Pte. Ltd., 2007
A Powerful Real-life Break-out I kept turning the pages on this one: a surprise for me because I don't like drug-smugglers and was expecting something smug from the one who got away. Every chapter is a self-contained story building up to the big night. Actually, the big night becomes less important since we know he got out but that doesn't spoil the story any more than knowing Charles de Gaulle wasn't assassinated in Day of ...

Bangkok (City Guide) 11 reviews Joe Cummings, China Williams
Lonely Planet, 2006
Where would you buy it? Amazon.com says this book will be published on March 2005. But try to go to Lonely Planet's online shop, then you can see that it has been published on Sep. 2004. Next, bn.com says it's been publised on March 2004. I don't know which is right. But I'm sure that this book came out already.
I gave 5 stars, however, because I knows LP is a great series at least.

Fodor's Bangkok's 25 Best, 4th Edition (25 Best) 1 review Fodor's
Fodor's, 2007
Concise, easy to read I like this guidebook. It is small in size and easy to carry. The format is colorful and includes lots of photos. The type is large enough to read easily. There is a fold-out map as well as a regular map in a plastic envelope in the back.
I haven't been to Bangkok yet, but what I've read seems in line with what I've read elsewhere. I'm be in Bangkok for 4 days in November and this seems ...
