Officespeak: The Win-Win Guide to Touching Base, Getting the Ball Rolling, and Thinking Inside the Box7 reviews

Simon & Schuster Spotlight Entertainment, 2006

Good gift idea for a co-worker
I was looking for a good gift for a co-worker I don't know too well, started thumbing through this, and ended up buying two -- one for the co-worker, and one for me. I get wary of humor books, but this one was dead-on hilarious. The section on the "history of the office" alone is worth the price of the book.

Base Ball in Cincinnati: A History (Mcfarland Historical Baseball Library, 3)1 review
Harry Ellard

McFarland & Company, 2004

A rare glimpse into Cincinnati baseball lore
Harry Ellard had amazing foresight in 1907 to write this book. Without it, most details surrounding the formation of baseball's first all-professional team (Cincinnati Red Stockings) would have been lost. The book is written in a Victorian style with tremendous detail about the people and places which fostered Cincinnati's historic franchise. Harry gives as much attention to the 1867 and 1868 ...

The Battle Of Base-ball (McFarland Historical Baseball Library) (McFarland Historical Baseball Library)
Carl H. Claudy, Christy Mathewson, ...

McFarland & Company, 2005

C.H. Claudy might have trouble finding a publisher for his Battle of Base-ball today. His yoking of baseball to warfare—accounts of ways to “cripple the enemy” and descriptions of managers as “battlefield generals”—to teach the young and inexperienced about the game would not likely be applauded in the age of political correctness. But as Claudy says in his preface, “The points of similarity are actual, not imagined,” and he spends most of the ...

Base-Ball Ballads: Grantland Rice (The Mcfarland Historical Baseball Library)1 review
Grantland Rice

McFarland & Company, 2004

He played the sportswriting game well
As a child one treat of mine was reading Grantland Rice's sport columns. One of the first poems I ever wrote was about him. I think I was about eight . It was modeled on his verse. "Among the tumult and the shouting , a joyous cry arose, it rose above all others, with their joys and their woes/ a man of strength and courage/ a heart of gold was his/ wherever there is baseball/ Grandtland Rice's ...

America's National Game: Historic Facts Concerning the Beginning Evolution, Development and Popularity of ...1 review
Albert G. Spalding

Halo Books, 1991

Vain & Romantic
This book is a good read. Yes the book has plenty of self congraduations by Albert Spalding. But this was a great athlete who took himself off the field to become a richman in selling sporting goods and to lesser extent in the Chicago White Stockings (later to become known as the Chicago Cubs). Purely slanted to the owners point of view in collective bargaining and the need to keep players honest ...
