Cowboys & Cave Dwellers: Basketmaker Archaeology in Utah's Grand Gulch4 reviews
Fred M. Blackburn, Ray A. Williamson

School of American Research Press, 1997

Detective story on finding "lost" archaeological collection
Undoubtedly the popular book of the year in Southwest archaeology, "Cowboys and Cave Dwellers" tells how a group of talented and dedicated "amateurs" found the missing links between nearly forgotten collections of artifacts stored in museum basements and their original sites in Utah's spectacular Grand Gulch. In the process they unearthed valuable information about the people called Basketmakers, ...

A Bearer of Tradition: Dwight Stump, Basketmaker2 reviews
Rosemary O. Joyce

Univ of Georgia Pr, 1989

Good, detailed steps illustrate a "lost art".
This book outlines the steps involved in making round oak baskets (not the basket shape but the material), and a profile of a rare and gentle man. Worth reading, good instructions.

Weaving a California Tradition: A Native American Basketmaker1 review
Linda Yamane

Lerner Publishing Group, 1996

Fine account of California Indian life today, great photos
This is the latest -- and one of the best -- of Lerner's unique "We're Still Here" series of Native American books for young people. The general structure of all these books is that they are written and photographed by tribal members. Each book follows a tribal young person -- here a girl, sometimes a boy -- of age from 11 - 14 through some daily life and some special activities. Contacts and ...

500 Baskets: A Celebration of the Basketmaker's Art (500 Series)12 reviews

Lark Books, 2006

The Art of Basketmaking, Still Evolving
The pictorial array from traditional to scultural baskets was the best way to present these baskets. For those in the art field to a novice interested in the making of baskets, this book showcased the creativity of a beautiful artform that is often overlooked. In my opinion, Lark books did a good job with just enough text about the basket and the name of the artists to let the baskets shine.

The archaeology of Sivu'ovi: The Archaic to Basketmaker transition at Petrified Forest National Park ...2 reviews
Jeffery F Burton

Western Archeological and Conservation Center, National Park Service, U.S. Dept. of the Interior, 1991

Very well written discussion of our hunting ancestsors.
This book (along with Ardrey's other three in what I think of as a sequence) is one of the most important books I have ever read. It (they) are mostly built around the discoveries made in Africa in the early and mid twentieth century of the remains of those of our ancestors who spent millions of years becoming us. Or, from our point of view, how we came to be the way we are. Unfortunately I ...

Our Lives in Our Hands: Micmac Indian Basketmakers1 review
Bunny McBride

Tilbury House Publishers, 1990

Our Lives in Our Hands
This is an excellent book for those interested in Indian cultural ways and how they are changing. This book focuses on the Micmac Indian basketmaker and the tradition and techniques of basketmaking. The photographs in the book show both the people and the craft and are an excellent addition to the text. If you want to see beyond the basket, into the lives of the people, this book is for you. ...

Before Columbus1 review
Muriel Batherman

Sandpiper, 1990

Simple with a Great Message
As a child, I remember reading books about the United States that began with "Columbus' discovery of America." I am very happy to see a book for children that talks about the "first discoverers of North America" (8). The drawings are very simple and the text is good and clear. The story is divided up into four parts: The First People, Early Basketmakers (1-450 A.D.), Late Basketmakers ...

The ancient Basketmakers (Southwest Museum leaflets)1 review
Charles Avery Amsden

Southwest Museum, 1939

Where else are you going to meet antique basketmakers?
24 pages of fairly small text and interesting black & white unusual photos make this quite a good research & resource booklet. Nicely designed. It has a list of references in the back which are all earlier than 1933, so I'm guessing this vintage booklet was printed a little later than that. Desirable for that list alone. Great deal, recommended.
