Bat-Manga!: The Secret History of Batman in Japan

Who would have thought?
North American comic fans in the 1960's knew Batman. You could turn the TV on, and watch Adam West/Burt Ward battle crime on a daily basis. The Green Hornet entertained us for a couple of seasons too. Look at the newsstands, and we could find the comic books everywhere. Bob Kane was getting credited with artwork, but Neal Adams, Carmine Infantino, and Gil Kane were starting to change the ...

Bats love this library
And librarians and the kids they share it with will love this book. The detailed pictures beg for young readers to take a closer look. Baby bats wear swimmies on their arms. A water fountain is turned into a great splashing pool. Characters from books kids know and love make frequent appearances, and the library setting reminds us of the venerable institutions we all remember, or at least wish ...

This Guide Is Worth Buying
I was a bit annoyed to open the package from Amazon and see this glorified pamphlet inside. "There goes ten bucks!" I thought. Don't let the size fool you, though. When I opened the booklet and started flipping through, I saw that it really is an excellent guide. It is far superior to anything else I have seen on the subject. I have seen bat houses for sale in my area that do not come close to ...

Great Halloween version of an old favorite!
This is a funny and easy-to-read picture book with hilarious illustrations, perfect for the 3-6 year-old in your life. My son and I read this together at least 10 times, and he still remembers it fondly. The one to two sentences per page read with an easy cadence that makes the book flow, very like the original Old Lady story. Great Halloween reading!

Excellent nonfiction
This is a very readable children's book about bats. It helps to dispel some of those nasty myths about our only flying mammal that seem to persist. I use this book as part of my unit on bats that I teach in my second grade classroom. A twin text that I also use is Stellaluna. Pairing fiction and nonfiction works very well with young children. Zipping... is very informative and a very good ...

Excellent Bat Book!
Last Christmas I got a Bat Detector (from Bat Conservation International). The instructions with it were very poor so I asked a local naturalist if she knew of any good bat books and specifically any that would indicate what frequency to tune the bat detector in to for our local bats. She recommended this book and its terrific! There's a short section up front that talks about bats and how they ...

Casey Strikes Out; Polacco Hits a Homer!
Thayer's classic ballad, `Casey at the Bat,' is greatly enhanced by Patricia Polacco's brilliantly achieved, big-hearted illustrations. Ms. Polacco captures emotion, action, and character through wittily exaggerated, slightly loopy pictures, and through lots of uncrowded background shenanigans. It's very cinematic: She effectively isolates action through extreme close-ups, and extends time ...

Beautiful book for all ages
I have all of Brian's books, and I must admit this is my favorite. The words rock you to sleep, and the illustrations make you laugh and make your heart smile. I love this book for so many reasons, but mostly the spirit of his love for the beach and the outdoors shines through. Bravo!

I Love This Book
Nicola writes in such a spare and poetic style that she must capture the imagination of each child who reads it, or has it read to her. She offers facts about this bat breed as she weaves her story, and topped with delicate artwork, it's just perfect.

Delightful mix of fantasy and reality
A book that dares to sprinkle in a bit of fantasy into an already (sort of) fairy tale world of Los Angelos? Why not? Block creates an enchanting heroine in Weetzie, a girl with her own determined to make her life as perfect and as wondrous as possible. For the fantasy aspect, here comes 3 wishes. Unlike the cliche, she is not punished for her wishes. They all come delightfully true in a ...

We love getting lost with Andrew!
My nearly-10-year-old son and I have read all of the Andrew Lost series. In #14 they start off riding on a bat, then a cockroach skeleton, and they end up on a bird, which will carry them on to their next adventure... Still full of their humorous exclamations. The adventures are always such fun: Elements of reality melded with the outrageous. We can't wait til the next one!

A tale of simpler, less hectic days
After reading the first couple of chapters of THE LUCKY BASEBALL BAT, I had to go back to the copyright page to see just when this book was written. After all, the hero of the story, a young boy named Martin and his younger sister Jeannie are invited into the house of Barry Welton, a teenager they had just met after Martin had an unfortunate incident on the ball field that left him sad and ...

A WONDERFUL LITTLE BOOK.
Randall Jarrell has given us a beautiful little story here of a bat and Maurice Sendak has given us some wonderful illustrations in the form of black and white drawings. There is not much to not like about this work. The children love it, and the adult reading it to the children will find it just as interesting and hypnotic as the child, if not more so, but on a different level. The text is ...

A great, informative book
Dr. Tuttle has set out to redeem the reputation of the bat clan and if people would just read this book I believe he would succeed. This book is packed with information that will help dispel the fear and misunderstanding with which people view bats, but at the same time it is by no means too technical to be readily understood (I first read it when I was about fourteen iirc and enjoyed it as ...

Time for Kids - Bats
I purchased this book for my first grade classroom. We do a unit of study on the elements of a non-fiction text. The Time for Kids books are wonderful for this unit. They have terrific pictures (which the kids love), and many elements of a non-fiction text, such as labeling, comparisions, captions, glossary, types of print, etc. I would highly recommend this book - really all of the time for ...

Thrilling!
I read this play and later saw it, too, performed at the local high school. The script itself is a brilliant work, but if you really want the full experience it is a must-see show. The music is heart-rending and inspiring, and the lyrics are creative and meaningful. I find the story, if a bit twisted, to be very truthful to our modern society, and it gives insight to our natural discriminatory ...

Night Fun
As a third grade teacher, I found this book useful on the 55th day of school. After reading the book, the children made a pyramid using manipulatives for the bats. We used 1" tiles. This demonstrates a growing pattern using +1 pattern to grow with. This is a nice lead-in to multiplication.

Bat 6 is an interesting story about two teams of 6th grade girls who play the annual softball game. Right before the game, each team gets a new girl. On Bear Field, Aki, a Japanese girl joins the team.
