The Keys of the Kingdom25 reviews
A.J. Cronin

Back Bay Books, 1984

Superbly written - dashedly skeptic - historically relevent
I purchased this book on the cheap not knowing a thing about A.J. Cronin. Reading the back, seeing the "Christian" theme, I decided to give it a try (it was on the clearence table!). Grabbed from the first few pages, one can't help but feel for poor Francis as he struggles through his emotional and tumultous childhood, discovering his faith and ultimately landing in China to rekindle the flame ...

Bodies in the Bay28 reviews
Mason L. Ramsey

Arrow Hunt Publishing, 1999

Hard To Put Down!
This is a wonderfully exciting book. The storyline and the intense writing style makes it a book hard to put down. I read the entire book in one night, even putting my family on hold. Hope to hear more from this author in the very near future. I would highly reccomend this book to readers who like detail and suspense.

New York Cookbook: From Pelham Bay to Park Avenue, Firehouses to Four-Star Restaurants
Cooks Magazine recommended this cookbook as being very authentic. I bought it because of their review. They were absolutely right. The recipes are original/authentic New York complete with history and original photos. It's a great read even if you never make any of the recipes. I highly recommend this book.

The Wisdom of Shepherds31 reviews
Rhett Ellis

Sparkling Bay Books, 2002

Great-- A Classic
The Wisdom of Shepherds is an all time favorite of mine. It is a story from the genre of wisdom literature that is tender and profound, rugged and beautiful. One winter evening, old Caleb returns to the cottage where he camps each year to discover that a young woman has moved into it. She is poor and she has a poor little daughter. He would send them away, but he cannot put them out in the cold-- ...

Get Slightly Famous: Become a Celebrity in Your Field and Attract More Business with Less Effort33 reviews
Steven Van Yoder

Bay Tree Publishing, 2003

Practical and useful guide for small business owners who want to make it big in their field
I am a landscaper with a unique niche, a big personality, and a strong point of view, and I can definitely see how becoming the most well-known person in the area, a local gardening celebrity, would provide great dividends to my business. The question is how do I get there, so that when local people think of gardening, they think of me first? If you are wondering something similar, look no ...

When a Crocodile Eats the Sun: A Memoir of Africa49 reviews
Peter Godwin

Back Bay Books, 2008

When a Crocodile Eats the Sun
Peter Godwin's book, titled above, is a very worth while read. In plain dialogue he lets the rest of the world know what is really going on in Zimbabwe in the most sensitive way possible through his own families lives. The book is beautifully written, I couldn't put it down once I started reading it, more especially after following the last fiasco of an election in June 2008. Why the other ...

Castle of Wisdom37 reviews
Rhett Ellis

Sparkling Bay Books, 1999

Likable Characters.
More than anything else, I liked the characters in Castle of Wisdom, especially the main character. I could identify with his search for meaning in life. I thought the writing could have been better, but I did not think the story could have been. It held my attention all the way through, and for me that is the mark of a good story.

WHEN PRIDE STILL MATTERED : A Life of Vince Lombardi141 reviews
David Maraniss

Simon & Schuster, 1999

A very engrossing read
I picked up this book after hearing a strong recommendation. I knew next to nothing about Vince Lombardi, other than that he was an excellent football coach. Very glad I bought the book as this was a particularly engrossing biography. The author was very thorough in his research and traces Lombardi's life in detail for his full nearly 60 years. He provides a lot of detail on Lombardi's ...

Lieutenant Hornblower49 reviews
C.S. Forester

Back Bay Books, 1984

Among the better of the Hornblower books
This is the sixth Hornblower book I've read, although it's only the second in terms of the chronology of Hornblower's naval career. And I must say, it's one of the better books. CS Forester could be a compelling writer, but some of the Hornblower novels feel a little disjointed. Not this one. Lieutenant Hornblower is written from the point of view of Lieutenant Bush, whom Hornblower meets ...

A Crack in Everything20 reviews

Diamond Books, 2006

Very enjoyable and inspirational read.
My book club loved this book! It's sweet and well written. I read it in one sitting. The story line is engrossing, it's also inspirational, although not in a didactic, boring way. We became invested in the characters, their interactions and the final satisfying resolution of the plot. There's also some humor in its spoofing of yoga and "new age stuff," which, as a yoga teacher, I relished.

The Power of the Dog : A Novel19 reviews
Thomas Savage

Back Bay Books, 2001

Cruel, stunning, haunting
A completely unexpected and disturbingly powerful character study of a small group of characters in the West, circa 1940s. The prose here is incredible, and the plot unfolds slowly and myteriously. Palpable tension-- the author knew precisely what he woas doing-- with an ending I truly didn't see coming. One of the most remarkable books I've ever read.

Hitty: Her First Hundred Years21 reviews
Rachel Field

Media Bay Audio Publishing, 2000

Old Fashioned Charm
Hitty: Her First Hundred Years, as originally written by Rachel Field in 1929, is delightful. The story follows the adventures of a doll, carved by a peddler from a piece of mountain ash, as told in her own words. From being proclaimed a "heathen" goddess on a South Seas Island, traveling with a snake charmer in India, being alternately a fashion plate and a demure Quakeress in the midst of the ...

The Last Ferry To Clover Bay20 reviews

Quiveir Press, 1999

Quite the fun read
This review is only four years late. I was given a copy of Dr. Haley's book as a thank you gift stemming from a business relationship with the sole task of thanks that I would write a short review. I just finished reading this book for the second time - and it was just as good the second as it was the first - possibly even better. Dr. Haley caputures quite a bit of the charm of living in ...

The R. Crumb Coffee Table Art Book (Kitchen Sink Press Book for Back Bay Books)18 reviews
R. Crumb

Back Bay Books, 1998

Confessional comix
A generation ago, American poets such as Sylvia Plath, Robert Lowell, John Berryman, and Anne Sexton gave birth to a genre that's come to be known as "confessional poetry." Their verse revealed intimate facts about their lives that simply weren't spoken of in polite company: fears, phobias, sexual hang-ups, pettiness, depression, suicidal tendencies. Some of their work wound up being rather ...

Knowledge of Angels22 reviews
Jill Paton Walsh

Green Bay Publications, 1994

Tour de Force
This book cries out for a different rating system - perhaps a 1-10 scale. Even then one would have to reward an "11" for this magnificent tome. I could not find a single flaw in the entire reading - character development and portrayal was realistic yet unforgettable, the setting mesmerizing (one is instantly transported back to the time of the Inquisition and the faith-filled, simple lives of ...

City Boy22 reviews
Herman Wouk

Back Bay Books, 1992

Fine and funny novel about adolescent adventures
Set in the Bronx in 1928, this Herman Wouk novel (his second) is all about Herbie Bookbinder and his experiences growing up during that time period. The scenes are warm and humorous, and move from one to another like the episodes in a good situation comedy. Two of my favorite funny scenes from the many to choose from are when Herbie and his friends are trying to get home on the subway and they ...
