I Am America (And So Can You!)423 reviews
Stephen Colbert

Grand Central Publishing, 2007

Read it ... Enough said !
He is Stephan Colbert .... and no other current TV show comedian is. This guy is extremely funny and his book had the kind of subtle and in your face humor that will keep any reader laughing out loud.

Corduroy97 reviews

Viking Juvenile, 1968

a favorite from my childhood that I'm passing to my child
Sweet story with a wonderful message. As a mom by adoption, this tale has a subtle subtext that works for our family. Also nice to have characters that aren't white without hitting you over the head with "diversity".

Eat Right 4 Your Type: The Individualized Diet Solution to Staying Healthy, Living Longer & Achieving Your ...474 reviews
Peter J. D'Adamo

Putnam Adult, 1996

What do you have to lose?
Originally I heard about this book from my boyfriend's mother, who is a cancer survivor. I had tried numerous diets over the years, including Atkins, Weight Watchers, Fit for Life, NutriSystem and so on. The diets would usually work and I would lose weight (mind you, I am not even obese, just wanted to shed some excess weight). However, like most people I was tired of diets and fads that made me ...

Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction (4th Edition) (Words Their Way ...35 reviews
Donald R. Bear, Marcia Invernizzi, ...

Prentice Hall, 2007

Very useful for homeschoolers too...
My children attended a public school where this program was used. When I brought them home due to their various LDs/allergies, I balked at the $40 price tag of this book and opted for the less expensive Spectrum Spelling books for their grade level. I found those to be rather annoying because often my children already knew the words. And the ones they didn't know, they would spell correctly on ...

Brown Bear & Friends Board Book Gift Set13 reviews
Bill Martin, Eric Carle

Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 2007

Beautiful, off-beat books.
Our baby girl loves these books. They're pretty well indestructible. The artwork is charming and a little trippy. The panda book in particular is simply gorgeous. Highly recommended.

The Memory Keeper's Daughter855 reviews
Kim Edwards

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2006

Absolutely loved this book!
Well I'm shocked at how many have rated this book poorly and goes to show everyone has different likes in what they read. I have not been so interested in a book in so long. I could not put this down and became incredibly enthralled with each of the characters ... all for differing reasons. I almost felt as though I was somewhere mixed in, literally within, their lives. I understood them and ...

Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain (Neuroscience)16 reviews
Mark F Bear, Barry Connors, ...

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2006

Basic Overlook of Neuroscience
This book is really good for a general understanding of neuroscience and it has good pictures. This is really a beginning undergraduate level book and can be used as supplemental material for basic concepts when a student is starting to become more advanced, but it does not go into much detail. It is well-written and consequently easy to read. If you're looking for an introduction to ...

City at the End of Time11 reviews
Greg Bear

Del Rey, 2008

Greg Bear does Clive Barker
In the text, Bear hints at Barker and Kerouac as inspirations. I'm not sure about Kerouac, but the debt to some of Barker's work is pretty obvious: content, characters and style. If you like Barker's "Imajica", for example, you'll probably enjoy this. Add in a bit of SF, take away a bit of horror. There are some obvious flaws: too many words, not enough happens. Bear tries a little too hard ...

Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Within Word Pattern Spellers (2nd Edition) (Words Their Way Series)1 review
Marcia Invernizzi, Francine Johnston, ...

Prentice Hall, 2008

Helpful for teaching spelling in a child-centered way
This book is helpful for offering a plan to teach spelling through word sorts. The steps are included, as are the words for each sort in an easy to copy format. I have found it useful after giving a whole class spelling assessment to teach small groups using these books. This allows me to better reach each child based on what she/he needs to be taught. I recommend this book along with others in ...

Conversations with God : An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 1)1136 reviews
Neale Donald Walsch

Putnam Adult, 1996

Most excellent book
First of all, when i recieved the book its external aestethics was just as one would suppose Gods own words was wrapped in. Most humble beauty is maybe the right word. So to the book itself. I read this book in about 2-3 days, almost not able to stop. Its language is very easy, and comprehendable for almost anyone that can read. The pages are just perfectly filled with words, not to much not ...

Jamberry98 reviews
Bruce Degen

HarperFestival, 1994

A favorite classic!
This book was a favorite with our first child 10 years ago, and we just bought another copy for our 1-yr.-old! I love the flowing, rhyming prose, and the illustrations allow for so much discussion and interaction. As with Dr. Suess books, I find myself repeating the words throughout the day (like when we're eating berries!) I definitely recommend this book!

Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Letter Name - Alphabetic Spellers (2nd Edition) (Words Their Way Series)5 reviews
Francine Johnston, Donald R. Bear, ...

Letter Name Spellers
This is a great resource for first and second grade teachers. Many of the skills addressed are those encountered in your classroom daily. Great companion to Words Their Way, and to offer a hands on opportunity for phonics, spelling and decoding words.

The Berenstain Bears Learn About Strangers (First Time Books(R))44 reviews
Stan Berenstain, Jan Berenstain

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1985

Great book
I have talked to my daughter on many occasions about strangers. However, after reading this book to her several times (and stopping to talk about what was happening), she's finally starting to understand that she shouldn't interact with strangers unless her parents are around.

Words Their Way Word Sorts for Syllables and Affixes Spellers (2nd Edition) (Words Their Way Series)2 reviews

A Great Tool
This book is very helpful in meeting students' individual spelling needs. It's nice to have the lists prepared for you and short instructional summaries to bring yourself up to speed on word patterns--things you don't even realize you know! The book is well-organized and offers success for all.
