A witty hunk of a read.
When Betty Fussell turns her wit and candor to meat we must follow. There is never a dull moment whether Fussell writes on corn or mushrooms. Add to that a hunk of grass-fed beef and you're set to come out swinging. Steak for breakfast is my ideal starter, plus a macaroon or two. big merci Betty for confirming my addiction.

An Excellent Book
This book starts with the framework for grass finished cattle production, then looks at day to day operation, followed by some more detailed points and problem shooting, before closing with marketing. This is a great guide and an enjoyable read. I liked it better than Pastured Poultry, but both are great books for those interested in the future of the farm buisness. Ryan

Fantastic--as usual!
I have a number of Heather Smith Thomas' horse books as well as Storey's Gude to Raising Cattle and I think this is one of Heather's best so far. As is typical of her writing (and Storey books in general), everything is presented in an orderly, interesting, and easily absorbed manner--the great illustrations are icing on the cake! I have only one bovine, a pet steer at that, yet the cattle care ...

Everything you ever wanted to know about cows
I already have trouble eating beef (I think of those big sad brown eyes). I just hate that it is so yummy. This book may have finished it off permanently for me. I now know more than I ever wanted to know, and I have to say I enjoyed learning it. As this book basically tells the history of the cow, with cave paintings attesting to the antiquity of our interest, leading to the modern ...

Everything we needed to know...and more
I bought this book for my husband who has always wanted to raise a small farm of beef cattle. He took the book along on our 2 week vacation to Europe and completely devoured the book! He loved it, says it's the best single book on the subject he's ever seen! He has now requested the same series for pigs. (We already have the one for chickens). Oh, our first calves will arrive in a few months!

Short on husbandry details - long on butchering details...
I'm sorry Phyllis, but I'm going to have to slam this book hard against the ground. I bought it at the local Co-Op at a time when I desparately needed important details for raising a small herd of beef calves. But the details just weren't there leaving me feel burned for the.. money.. I spent. Assuming a person is raising one little perfect calf - then the book will maybe get them through. But ...

It's short, fun but complete and to-the-point
I can't remember exactly when I became introduced to beef jerky. I believe it was on the way to a Boy Scout camping trip when the troop stopped at a convenience store and one of my fellow scouts bought some of that weird-looking beef jerky stuff sold by the cash register. Years later, in grad school, I realized I could make jerky in my apartment. I bought a cheap dehydrator and some mixes ...

This book saved my bacon...
I am a novice rancher who bought 37 calves at an auction. At one point I had 15 sick calves on my hands, primitive corrals, and the whole town laughing at me. Tonight, I can honestly say the worst is past. My brother and I doctored ten bad eyes, saved a bloat case, doctored a footrot immediately and effectively, and saved at least five extremely ill pneumonic calves, while vaccinating, ...

Not recommended for USDA employees!
Livingston takes a definite outdoorsman approach to jerky. He is sharply critical of USDA safety regulations, and he doesn't believe in nitrate cure as a preservative (he includes it in a few recipes, but says it's for preserving the color of the meat, not as a safety procedure). Some of the air-drying recipes gave me the willies just thinking about them! Livingston's approach to safety is to ...

Father, son and dog story
Greatest thing about reviewing a children's book is that you don't have to read 500 pages. This book is shorter than a short Leno monologue. This reviewer only read the book. Did not listen to audio. Nice illustrations by S.B. Whitehead are a major part of the book. The story shows an energetic father, slightly mischievous son and forgiving father and loveable dog who saves the situation.
