Excellent in content, but somewhat challenging in narrative
Bela Bollobas has the rare gift of having both deep mathematical insights, and the ability to eloquently communicate them in a way that is accessible to the average graduate student. In his book "Modern Graph Theory", Bollobas covers just about every exciting area of the subject, and does so in an up-to-date fashion that gives the reader a big picture of each sub-area of the field. The ability to ...

An wonderful introduction to a complex composer
This book is a fabulous introduction to the music of a man whose compositions are often a bit difficult to understand. Kenneth Chalmers eloquently takes the reader on a journey through Bartok's life and music. In spite of the fact that there are some musical details, Chalmers did not get bogged down in alot of the compositional jargon that might dissuade one to read this particular ...

DREAMS!!
Having read all of Mr. Rhodes books, and they all have been 5 stars, this is the best. Not to many people know about this part of Lugosi's life as well as Mr. Rhodes. This was truly a labor of love and dedication. All that is left is BRAVO, authario,BRAVO. Mr. Sheffield also deserves kudo's on all his knowledge of Lugosi. The stills and other bits of entertainment pieces make this a great read. ...

Excellent
This fascinating biography chronicles the life and work of Hollywood legend Bela Lugosi. Richly detailed, the book takes the reader through the highs and lows of Lugosi's life, from his early success as a stage actor, to his last tragic years working for the notorious producer Ed Wood. Professor Lennig is uniquely qualified to write this story, as he is a film scholar and was a personal ...

The Gems of Combinatorics
This book provides an excellent introduction to a wide variety of extremely active areas of combinatorics. It focuses on the "gems" of the field -- proofs and results which are simultaneously deep, central, and beautiful. One particular feature is the section on infinte Ramsey theory which presents this beautiful but taxing area in an exceptionally clear fashion. There are many good exercises.

Profound and relevant
Written in the late 1940's, but with sections from the author's earlier works in the '20's and '30's, this deeply insightful work is entirely free of the jargon that so often infects critical writing about cinema. The section on sound, much of it written within a few years of the birth of sound-cinema, is astonishing for its insights about the potentials of a new form of expression.

Curse Mike Segretto!
I've been a serious Mike Segretto fan since his debut novel, Dead Dog. Each novel since then has been more twisted than the last, and Curse of the Tarantula is as good as it gets. A great mix of campy humor, gory horror, and mod history, I'd recommend this one to anyone who loves John Waters, Joe Lansdale, or reading books that don't suck.

Good book for Lugosi fans.
As the title implies, this book focuses on the films of Bela Lugosi. It has a 30 page biography which gives a good overall idea of Lugosi's carreer without going into much detail. The rest of the book is a list of all of Lugosi's movies, with cast and crew details, contemporary reviews and the author's comments about each of his American sound movies, and also a list with brief descriptions of ...

Batok is the man!
I am a music composer and I have found the essays by Bartok compiled in this book very interesting and helpful. For example, there are several essays describing how Bartok organized many of his compositions. There are also several essays describing different types of folk music such as American, Rumanian, and Hungarian. There is an essay on the 'So-called Bulgarian Rhythm.' I definitely ...

Fantastic a must for all Lugosi fans
What can I say, this book is a great followup expansion of Lennig's earlier biography, which has been my favorite books since I purchased it in the early 1970s. Informative and loaded with pictures, you can tell the author idolizes the subject and won't skimp on the details. This book shows why Lugosi should be considered to be more than just a ham actor from the golden age of Hollywood which ...

Brutal, Gripping, Honest.
Written almost immediately following the end of WWII, there was no distance between M. Zsolt and his experiences. Originally published as articles in a magazine, the force of the writing really slams into the reader from the beginning. M. Zsolt picks up his story in 1944 in the Nagyvarad ghetto. At that time, he had already been a slave ('forced labourer') for the Hugarian forces allied with ...

This book changed my musical life.
This is the most concise musical analysis I have ever read. The examples are clear and without ambiguity. The logical progression of discussing the simple building blocks of Bartok's style leading on to the complex aspects of his writing is perfect. However, the pinnacle achievement of this book is the section that explains the natural progression of harmonic structures from Bach through Bartok ...

A Powerful Book
This book was written by Bela Karolyi, the Romanian coach who has coached such gymnastics legends as Nadia Cominici, Mary Lou Retton, Kim Zmeskal, Dominique Moceanu and Kerri Strug. This book tells you about his life in Romania, training Nadia, defecting to America, and all the way to the 1992 Olympics. Before I didn't know much about Bela or about the girls he had trained. But after reading ...
