Beluga Days: Tracking the Endangered White Whale5 reviews
Nancy Lord

Mountaineers Books, 2007

Save the Whales!
The title of this review is something of a cliche. Whales have gone from being considered a natural resource to an animal that receives very favorable treatment in the popular press. At least in the United States popular sentiment has turned against hunting of these animals. Today, commercial whaling operations employ tour guides, not harponists. Whale watching has replaced whale hunting. ...

Beluga: A Farewell to Whales2 reviews
Pierre Beland

The Lyons Press, 1996

a must for whale lovers
"Beluga: A Farewell to Whales" is definitely one book I wish the title for was not so apt. In this work Pierre Beland does an amazing job in bringing to life a remarkable animal, the beluga whale, and in particular one population of this species, those that inhabit the immense St. Lawrence estuary in Canada. He also brings to life in a sad and sometimes sickening way the plight facing these ...

Beluga Whales (WorldLife Library Series)4 reviews
Tony Martin

Voyageur Press (MN), 1996

A beautiful and well book
I found this book to be incredibly informative and very well written. It gives the reader a simple, yet complete introduction to these beautiful creatures. I first became facinated with the Beluga whales when I saw the ones at Sea World in Orlando a few years ago. This book by Tony Martin allowed me to learn more about them. Mr. Martin has been studying the Beluga whales for over 17 years, ...

Patricia A. Pingry

Candy Cane Press, 2006

Cute and Educational
This book is fantastic and has a combination of cartoon pictures as well as photographs. The information is simple and clear. Sturdy pages stand up to my baby girl throwing all her books on the floor. A great addition to our library.

Alaska's Kenai Peninsula Wildlife Viewing Trail Guide3 reviews
Doug O'Harra, Katherine Hocker, ...

Alaska Department of Fish and Game, 2007

Great Viewing
I had friends visit the Kenai Peninsula for two weeks in July. We used this guide to find 130 bird species and all the major mammals - marine and land. It is cheap, well done, and full of information. My friends took it home as a remainder of why they love Alaska.

Beluga Passage (Smithsonian Oceanic Collection) (Smithsonian Oceanic Collection)2 reviews
Linda Lingemann

Soundprints, 1996

Loved this book
I checked this out from the library when I was about four years old and I loved the cassette that came with it. If you can find it with the cassette, it is very cool. The whale sounds are awesome and the man who narates it really does it well.

Beluga Whales (True Books)2 reviews
Ann O. Squire

Children's Press(CT), 2007

Factually incorrect
My whale-loving 7 year old daughter pointed out serious factual errors in this book. If anything, it's a terrific resource to show kids that just because something is in a book written by a PhD, it's not necessarily true. The book is well put together and has terrific resources in the back for further study. If not for the glaring errors of fact, I'd have given it more than two stars.

Laura Crawford

Sylvan Dell Publishing, 2007

Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star Review
REVIEWED BY: Gayle Jacobson-Huset I really loved this cleverly written book with the colorful, kid-friendly illustrations. Author Laura Crawford did an excellent job with her rhyming text that introduces each arctic animal and then builds on sentences that make for a fun read. I give this one a high five for its terrific text, storyline, and awesome, refreshing illustrations. If your ...

Baby Beluga (Raffi Songs to Read)40 reviews
Raffi

Crown Books for Young Readers, 1997

A Great Classic
This book was an instant hit, and we have sung it many times each day for my 12 month old grandson. The board book form is especially important for a book so "loved" by toddlers.

Pioneers-19371 review
Patricia de Belloy Williams

Beluga-Duga Press, 2003

Review of Pioneers--1937
I really enjoyed reading Pioneers--1937 because Muriel was so spunky and full of pluck. Another thing I liked about it is that it was a long book. The thing about short books is they end so quickly. This book was a good length, but even so I didn't want to come to the end! One thing (and the only thing!) I disliked about the book is that the girls were playing with an Ouija Board, and the story ...

The Bear Hunter11 reviews
James, Hart Isley

Alabaster Books, 2007

The Bear Hunter
What an amazing, heartfelt, deeply emotional book!! I was totally unprepared for the authors insight into human suffering, feelings of inadequacy, anger, lust, love and the deep connections that fathers have for their sons. All this in the mist of a bear hunting trip that expounds on the beauty of mother nature in the great Alaskan wilderness. This author delights and surprises you with his ...

Beluga Whales and Their Babies (Zoo Life Book)1 review
Marianne Johnston

PowerKids Press, 1999

Beluga whales and their babies
This is an excellent factual book about the birth, habitat and life of a beluga whale. The text is full of information stated in a simple and direct way that young readers would be able to read. The pictures are wonderful, although the actaul photograph of the baby beluga being born is one I would avoid in my elementary classroom. I know the students would think the photos are as adorable as I ...

LOOK AT ME! I'M A CHEF!
Woah, wait a second... stop looking at me. Look at the ladies. They are even tastier than the food. Mmmmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmmm.... You know, just the other day I was thumbing through my recipes and I started thinking... these recipes need pictures of devistatingly HOT girls and then life would be perfect. Well, apparently someone else thought the same thing, and they went out and found the girls, and ...

The Beluga Café: My Strange Adventure with Art, Music, and Whales in the Far North2 reviews
Jim Nollman

Sierra Club Books, 2002

Who are we to say
This is a very powerful book. It is not the typical wilderness adventure book. Unlike the TV nature show, amazing things don't happen every few mintutes. In fact few amazing things happen at all, yet the whole experience of small wilderness experiences add up to a book that will take you to another place. "It seems critical to me to devote some part of each year to this nothingness, this ...

Beluga Days: Tracking a White Whale's Truths6 reviews
Nancy Lord

Counterpoint, 2003

Beluga Days
Beluga Days takes an in-depth look at the plight of a distinct population of beluga whales in Cook Inlet, Alaska. Plauged by over-hunting, these whales have fallen from a population of approximately one thousand animals in 1990 to an estimated two hundred fifty today. The book discusses the politics of regulating native hunting, the difficulties of getting the whales placed on the endangered ...
