My 9 year-old reluctant reader is begging for this one...
although she normally only enjoys fiction! She's giggling with excitement with every chapter and can't stop talking about this book! If you have have a reluctant history student and want to *spark* an interest in Ben Franklin's life and work, *experiment* with this excellent Landmark that reads more like a story than a biography!

Ben Franklin's Fooling Around
Benjamin Franklin fooled around a lot. It wasn't because he was lazy; he had a strong curiosity to find out things, and he did. But once he knew something, he didn't fool around. He knew he didn't want to work for his brother, so he left. He knew England was wrong to tax the colonies the way they did, so he told them so. He knew how to invent things that others needed, so he did. This was ...

Ben and Me
ISBN 0440420385 (which now belongs to another book) - Really well-done, tongue in cheek "biography" of Benjamin Franklin, a man who is "undeniably stupid at times", according to Amos, the mouse, whose brilliant ideas seem to be all that stand between Franklin and certain death with his crazy experiments. Amos, oldest of 26 children, comes from a family of church mice. Knowing how hard it is ...

Rigorous and Authoritative. The Best Book on Great Depression Economics
Bernanke rigorously explains the economics of the Great Depression. A massive monetary contraction (reduction in the money supply) was the cause of the Great Depression, in large part due to the flawed gold standard that was created following World War One. The massive banking collapse (due to weak regulation) further worsened the disaster. To a lesser extent, the Smoot-Hawley tarriff contributed ...

I found the book very good for younger kids. It is a good introduction to Ben Franklin for those who know little about his life as a young man. Easy to read and is a level 2.

Terrific!
I bought this book for my students reading about the American Colonies and Revolution. I didn't feel that I knew enough about Ben Franklin and needed to learn more. My students were facinated about him because he was an inventor and did the experiment with the key and the kite to learn about electricity. I learned so much from this book that I had never known before and the readabilty level is ...

"Ben's Rules for Being a Better Writer "Everyone, Ben believed, had a need to communicate well. Over the years he developed and stuck to these writing rules. "Good writing should be smooth, clear, and short, and the art of saying little in much must be avoided at all costs. In written discourse, every needless thing gives offense and must be eliminated...Had this always been done, many large and ...

One of the better "Manage by Hero" books
I have a weakness for reading every management book that tries to teach management concepts by relating the ideas to an historical hero. I've read management by Lincoln, Grant, Lee, Achilles, and even Star Trek characters. They all follow the same format and for the most part do does McCormick. One significant difference, however, is that McCormick recognizes and cautions the reader from ...

The best Franklin book
I am a pretty big Franklin buff and probably read about a dozen books on him, but this one stands out as the one I would recommend the most. First and foremost the excellent rewriting of Ben's text create the wisdom of Franklin in it's most accessible form. Reading Franklin can often be challenging to sort out the entire meaning due to the antiquated language of his day. This book restates ...

Great ideas for beginner and advanced, thanks again, Heidi!
After purchasing Heidi's "Simply Beautiful Beading", I couldn't wait for this book. I wasn't disappointed. Great ideas - some simple, some more advanced. Directions are clear, nice templates, clever embellishments. I was even able to use some of her techniques in demonstrations I gave. I'm looking forward to her next book! Highly recommend.

Franklin's informal account of his remarkable life
In many ways, this is, to someone coming to it for the first time, a very surprising book. For one thing, it is amazingly incomplete. Franklin is, of course, one of the most famous Americans who ever lived, and his accomplishments in a wide array of endeavors are a part of American lore and popular history. A great deal of this lore and many of his accomplishments are missing from this account of ...

Hidden in Plain Sight tells the tragic untold story of children's rights in America. It asks why the United States today, alone among nations, rejects the most universally embraced human-rights document in history, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This book is a call to arms for America to again be a leader in human rights, and to join the rest of the civilized world in recognizing that the thirst for justice is not for ...
