A Must Read for Any Swimmer or Parent
Although this book leaves swim training to the coaches, this book offers the incredible journey of Michael Phelps from childhood swimming to the 2004 Olympics. As a college swimmer, it was a relief to read about his training and see similarities with my own. He offers lessons for life that are necessary for any young athlete. Phelps had help writing the book, but his words and experiences ...

Explaining the Underworld
A beautiful book, monumental piece of research, with clear and engaging prose and a great mix of maps, illustrations, capsule histories, lively facts, and timelines. If you ever stood over a manhole or at the dark edge of a subway tunnel and wondered, "What's down there?" then this book will tell you. Beneath the Metropolis describes what's underneath 12 world cities -- New York, Chicago, San ...

The best written psychology textbook ever, period?
It has been thirteen years since I had to buy the Third Edition of Beneath the Mask for a theory of personality class in psychology graduate school in 1987. The book is now apparently in the Sixth Edition. And it is the only textbook I have ever kept over the years. Usually textbooks are so dry. We hate them. They are poorly written in most cases, since they are written usually by dry experts ...

Excellent
Unfortunately, those that give this book a negative review are sadly mistaken regarding what is involved in RAD therapy. TRUE holding therapy is NOT holding a struggling child down while he or she screams in rage. Holding therapy is very gentle, where a child is held lovingly like an infant is. Mother and child make eye contact and mother sings or tells child stories. I have seen holding ...

DO NOT BUY FINE ART BOOKS FROM AMAZON!!
The book is fantastic! However to my horror it was packed very badly and the book arrived scratched and a big chunk taken out of the cover. Amazon expects me to pay for all shipping costs to get a refund. Since I live in Australia the return shipping would surpass the value of the books sent. I emailed Amazon with this issue 2 weeks ago and NO REPLY! DO NOT BUY FINE ART BOOKS FROM AMAZON!!

Author of new novel about troubled teen in foster care "RETURNABLE GIRL"
As Debbie says in her preface, if you are a therapist who works with teenagers you are bound to work with adopted teens. Debbie offers sound advice for therapists and parents alike in navigating the sometimes turbulent waters of adopted teenagers. As a therapist, parent of two teens, and author of "Survival Meditations for Parents of Teens," I heartily recommend Ms. Riley's book. My novel, ...

American Ignorance and Attitudes Toward Latin American
In this readable and comprehensive book Schoultz describes the relations between the United States and Latin America. He shows the domestic politics, attitudes and individuals that made Americas relations with Latin America. We see the ignorance and attitude of superiority that was first stated by John Adams, and never totally went away. He demonstrates how England's influence in Latin America ...

1906 is not far from 2008
For anyone being crushed and canned within the (mostly) incompetant and self-serving system of American Educational Faculty personnel, this book is a fair warning to any prospective college student (of any age) as to what they are really signing up for. I would suggest it as required reading prior to completing applications for any US institution of "higher learning". I completed a BA, MBA, and ...

Best Book This Year !
Our book club chose this as our Spring selection and the verdict was unanimous. It was the best story we had read all year. We spoke with the author during our meeting and talked about his experience in Japan as a teacher, his motivation for the story line and his research into the real characters in this love story of persistence and courage. It reminded me of Memoirs of a Geisha, as the main ...

Great story about a Blue Ridge Mountain family
This is a strong story with believable characters, rich descriptions of the location, and remarkably accurate cultural details of the 1950s in rural Appalachia. Lots of local interest for readers familiar with the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Roger Born MyMac.com Review
Writing a book about tunnels under a city can almost always spark interest in readers. There are so many tunnels, and so many cities that have them - an astonishing number, in nearly every country of the world. However, most anything written about underground spaces of the cities that have them range from ultra-dry Corps of Engineer type-documents to historical works of varying merit, some of ...

The main course is frostbite! The appetizers are chills. Enjoy!
This is Perry Sachs book #2, so I realize that I'm a little bit behind on a few Gansky thrillers. I guess I always have some catching up to do. But this was great! For me it took a few pages for this to pick up, but once it did it happened rather nicely. So, if you happened to read "A Treasure Deep," then you can expect appearances from Jack Dyson, Gleason, and if you know Gansky's writing, a few ...

Beneath the Surface provides both a framework and specific pedagogical strategies for working effectively with students learning English?. Ken Pransky asks teachers to take an honest look at who they are, what they know and believe, and what they do in their classrooms. The result is to encourage teachers to be genuinely empathetic and - in the end - exactly the kind of teachers we need for the twenty-first century. - Sonia Nieto ...

For crying out India
Michael Pakenham of the Baltimore Sun is quoted on the back cover of the copy I bought of this book by saying, 'It's the best thing ever written about rock and roll. It is rock and roll ..' One question: How much did this guy get paid to say that. Multiple too many times, now, I've been steered totally wrong from critics who are joltingly convinced of how good a piece of art/entertainment ...

Beneath a Blue Umbrella, a melon seller sat.
This was my cousin's favorite book as a child. Jack Prelutsky did a good job of it. Even though the book is about as long as a novel, my baby cousin (now nine and a half) sat through the whole book. When she got up to Anna Banana, she would hold her hands up in the air like she was walking on them. The poems, (some based on familiar nursery rhymes) others totally original, are still staples ...
