Black seas of infinity: The best of H.P. Lovecraft1 review
H. P Lovecraft

SFBC Science Fiction, 2001

Lovecraft
Heed the Call "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear..." H.P. Lovecraft A quiet, little hamlet that might be set down anywhere in New England, and call itself at home, but located in the rolling hills of north-central Pennsylvania. The man who rented me this house was accommodating enough, but there was something--reptilian about him, for lack of a better word. In fact, ...

NECRONOMICON COMMEMORATIVE EDITION - THE BEST WEIRD TALES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT1 review
H.P. & Stephen Jones, Editor Lovecraft

Victor Collancz, 2008

...judged not by its cover
Having more than thirty of Lovecraft's horror tales neatly printed and stacked is worth the asking price here, but it's a shame about this edition's looks and quality. My copy has the budget gold-leaf printing skewed to the left, so that the spine offers an "ECRONOMICON" to the reader browsing my bookshelf. In more gold-leaf on the back, Stephen King informs us that Lovecraft "opened the way for ...

Best Science Fiction Stories of H. G. Wells3 reviews
H. G. Wells

Dover Publications, 1966

The tremendous imaginative power of a truly great mind.
For any s/f devotee, particularly Wells fans, this book is a must. It is an absolute feast for the mind, disclosing any number of fictional but feasible possibilities, and how people cope with their unexpected benefits and dangers. Most of the stories are tightly written, boldly imaginative, and always entertaining. I and couldn't put it down, even after I had read it through the first time. ...

The Best of H. P. Lovecraft: Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre136 reviews
H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Bloch

Del Rey, 1987

Lovecraft is a master
Great collection of Lovecraft stories. I would love to have seen "The Cats of Ulthar" in this collection too, but I guess you can't have everything. I know there are some legal copyright disputes on some of H.P.'s works. Lovecraft is truly a master who has influenced many modern writers and horror filmmakers, noteably Stephen King. Definitely check out this volume. Lovecraft's vocabulary is ...

The Best of James H. Schmitz5 reviews
James H. Schmitz

Nesfa Press, 1991

ood sampling of Schmitz
I'm a long time fan of James H Schmitz from when his stories first appeared in the sixties and seventies, and so I was pleased to see his work coming back into print This volume is just a sampling of what he was capable of. It introduces several of the characters that appear in many of his other stories. Telzey Amberdon in here, in both Novice and Goblin Night. Heslet Quillan is in Lion Loose ...

The best of H.T. Webster: a memorial collection1 review
Harold Tucker Webster

Simon and Schuster, 1953

Most underrated cartoonist in America
H.T. Webster is my favorite cartoonist. The art and jokes are understated and yet excellent. Everyone who likes cartoons (or bridge, golf, fishing, the 30s and 40s) needs to own a copy of this book. It is super cheap (they must have made millions of copies). I only wish I could find another volume of his cartoons.
