The Code Book: The Evolution of Secrecy from Mary, Queen of Scots to Quantum Cryptography 249 reviews Simon Singh
Doubleday, 1999
Excellent!!! If you have never read a Simon Singh book, it's time to begin now! While most Singh books can seem a bit boring when you read the synopsis (can a book about codes really be interesting??), this is not the case. He has a wonderfull way of explaining complicated things in an understandable way. I will also highly recommend "Fermat's enigma" and "Big bang".

With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa 188 reviews E.B. Sledge
Presidio Press, 2007
A Classic! With the Old Breed does for World War II's Pacific Theater what Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers does for the war's European Theater. The difference is that Eugene B. Sledge lived through the battles he describes in this outstanding memoir of modern war. Sledge's detailed, emotionally wrought descriptions of the horrors of the World War II battlefield are reminiscent of Norman Mailer's novel, ...

These Is My Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 Arizona Territories 205 reviews Nancy E. Turner
Regan Books, 1999
I love it! These is My Words is definitely my favorite book from the last few years. It starts out with 18 year old Sarah Prine traveling across the country with her family in 1881. As you can imagine, it's hard and stressful on all of the family. We see Sarah through the trip, the settling down with her family in the Arizona Territory, and starting her life in the harshness of the time.
The book is ...

Rocket Boys (The Coalwood Series #1) 533 reviews Homer H. Hickam
Dell Publishing Company, 1900
Amazing True Story Homer Hickam grew up in a rural isolated mountain town but went on to win the National Science Fair.
This book is his story and how he was successful.
I bought 24 copies of this book to inspire my advanced 6th grade Reading class. They loved the book. In our discussions they mentioned never giving up. Homer and his friends kept trying until they had success.
Thank you for sharing your ...

James Cameron's Titanic 314 reviews James Cameron, Ed Marsh, ...
Harper Paperbacks, 1997
TITANIC REDEUX The scope of this majestic book truly befits the epic effort by James Cameron with his cinematic masterpiece "Titanic". Much great information here for the movie buff who likes to see how it is done. Incredible sets including the dining salon, complete even to dishes and decor. I was amazed to see how this particular set was pulled underwater by hydraulics to provide a very realistic feeling of ...

Truman 272 reviews David McCullough
Simon & Schuster, 1992
Amazing biography This is one of those rare biographies which pulls you in from the beginning and never lets go. It is an excellent look at one of the truly under-appreciated presidents. Truman was an amazing man and an incredible public servant. The sense of history that this biography brings makes it a must-read for anyone interested in American history and/or American politics.

Tomorrow, When the War Began (Tomorrow Series) 156 reviews John Marsden
Houghton Mifflin, 1995
Fabulous Ellie is so articulate, bright, and caring that she makes what would have been an average story into an amazing and believable account of eight young adults out to save their families and ultimately their homeland.
Once I got used to the Australian vernacular, I read this book at an amazing pace because I simply couldn't put it down.
I can't wait to hunt down the rest of this series.

The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors 121 reviews James D. Hornfischer
Random House Audio, 2004
Truly common boys, truly uncommon heroes What an amazing, moving and inspiring book. It reads almost as a work of fiction, it moves so fluidly and thoroughly from character to character, ship to ship, and side to side. But every bit of it is true. It is hard to imagine that the white haired, slow-moving gentlemen we see at the malls or at church are some of the same who lived through the flames, the shrapnel, the bullets, the fear, ...

The Six Wives of Henry VIII 129 reviews Alison Weir
Vintage Books, 2008
Impressive book, riveting story What I liked most about this book is also what since distresses me most about films circulating on this topic. Weir so thoroughly researches the profusion of biographic material available (besides Britain, courts throughout Europe had documention on the wives of Henry and him) that it is clear there is no need to fictionalise this fascinating story (you wouldn't even try to imagine it). And ...

One Bullet Away: The Making of a Marine Officer 140 reviews
Simon & Schuster Audio, 2005
A great memoir CAPT. Fick's memoir is a great read. You really feel like you know his men, and gain a great perspective on the Iraq war. It is a great example of leadership under pressure and being in the military, I recommend it to anyone that is or will be in the military. You come to realize some of the mistakes that were made early on in the war that came to be major problems that we are still dealing with ...

Forgotten Soldier : The Classic WWII Autobiography (Brassey's Commemorative Series WWII) (Brassey's ... 163 reviews Guy Sajer
Brassey's (UK) Ltd, 1990
Chillingly Clear Account of War on the Eastern Front Awsome - the one word I use to describe this book.
Debates exist whether this book is non-fiction or fiction mainly due to the inaccuracies regarding specific details, some minor such as uniform markings. However, after researching this topic I came across a letter to the Editor of "Military Review", printed in the March-April 1997 edition, by a Douglas E. Nash. Nash eventually located Sajer ...

I Have Lived A Thousand Years: Growing Up In The Holocaust 161 reviews Livia Bitton-Jackson
Simon Pulse, 1999
A First Holocaust Book for the Teen Reader "I Have Lived A Thousand Years" is a personal and gut-wrenching story of how a 13-year old girl survived the German Holocaust in the death camp of Auschwitz. The book is fairly short with short chapters. It is obviously written for adolescent readers, but can certainly be appreciated by adults as well. This is a very good first book for teens to learn about the Holocaust. It is written in the ...

Searching for reality, found in this book With my brother and sister currently serving in Iraq, and my husband and brother-in-law on their way there this year, I am very interested in the reality of what is going on there. Paul Reickhoff gave me what I was looking for ...

Same Kind Of Different As Me 146 reviews Ron Hall, Denver Moore
Thomas Nelson, 2006
A very anointed book.....READ IT! I recommend this book to everyone. It's very open, honest, and gritty. I love how the two authors go back & forth to weave a story that you can visualize. (This book would make an awesome movie.) It reminds me some of the Green Mile, so if you loved that book....you'll love this book too. I watched Denver on a show one day, and someone asked him how did your life get turned around like that. ...

Civil War: A Narrative (3 Vol. Set) 137 reviews Shelby Foote
Random House, 1974
A wonderful odyssey through a terrible time. I was initially intimiated about the prospect of launching into just one volume of Foote's narrative and so I made the mistake of buying only the first book -- I should have bought all three volumes at the start! It takes about 50 - 100 pages to get into Foote's style of writing, and at times he turns a quirky phrase from the '60's (1860's), but this is enjoyable reading, bar none. If there was ...
