May have changed my life
As we all know, E.O. Wilson is a giant of modern biology. Though his work has not always been quietly accepted, his ideas and opinions are undoubtedly an invaluble resorce to the world. In this huge book, Wilson presents what he believes are the 57 most important essays on the current state of Earth's biodiversity. Being assigned summer reading, my teacher was convinced that I would love this ...
Biodiversity and the Law: Intellectual Property, Biotechnology and Traditional Knowledge

Great examination of rain forest destruction
I was drawn to this book because of the foreword by Vandana Shiva. I kept reading it. It does a good job of looking at several of the different variables causing rain forest destruction and keys in on land and food as major factors. Clear and easily read. Not to long or overly verbose.

I was disappointed in this book. It is basically a college level textbook, inclusive but dry. Not a book to inspire, rather one to cram from for your next exam

Towards a unified thoery, but not there yet
A couple of years ago, Dr. Jim Brown (Univ. New Mexico) wrote an article in the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) website indicating that he had not seen any really significant new ideas in ecology during the last few year. Well, we have one. In the hierarchy of biological systems, ecology deals with the highest and most complex levels. Explanation for patterns of ...
Biodiversity II: Understanding and Protecting Our Biological Resources

An invaluable addition to the "biodiversity" bookshelf
"Biodiverity II" is a fascinating and important collection of essays on nearly every facet of biodiversity. What makes this book so rich is that each essay is written by the leading expert in his or her field. And you don't need to be a scientist to enjoy Biodiversity II--I'm not, and I found it very accessible.

Must read...
I originally used parts of the book for a research project, but after reading portions I decided that I must have the book and reread it from cover to cover. It has great concepts and it is well edited for a nice flow. If you like wildlife and climate change interests you this is a must read.
Sustaining Life: How Human Health Depends on Biodiversity
Oxford University Press, USA
, 2008
The Earth's biodiversity-the rich variety of life on our planet-is disappearing at an alarming rate. And while many books have focused on the expected ecological consequences, or on the aesthetic, ethical, sociological, or economic dimensions of this loss, Sustaining Life is the first book to examine the full range of potential threats that diminishing biodiversity poses to human health. Edited and written by Harvard Medical School ...
Conservation and Biodiversity Banking: A Guide to Setting Up and Running Biodiversity Credit Trading Systems ...
Earthscan Publications Ltd.
, 2007
The conservation of biodiversity is now big business. Whether called conservation banking, species banking, habitat banking, biodiversity banking, biodiversity offsets, compensatory mitigation or ecological footprint offsetting, the idea of financially valuing biodiversity and using the market and businesses to promote conservation is growing rapidly. This handbook is a comprehensive guide to conservation banking explaining: what it is and how ...
What Is Biodiversity?
James Maclaurin
,
Kim Sterelny
University Of Chicago Press
, 2008
In the life sciences, there is wide-ranging debate about biodiversity. While nearly everyone is in favor of biodiversity and its conservation, methods for its assessment vary enormously. So what exactly is biodiversity? Most theoretical work on the subject assumes it has something to do with species richness—with the number of species in a particular region—but in reality, it is much more than that. Arguing that we cannot make ...
Biodiversity

Clarion Books
, 2003
A photo essay demonstrating the concept of biodiversity, a term used to encompass the many forms of life on Earth and their interdependence on one another for survival. The reader not only gets a firm grasp of what biodiversity is, but also an explanation of why it is important to maintain.
Applying Nature's Design: Corridors as a Strategy for Biodiversity Conservation (Issues, Cases, and Methods ...

Clinton N. Jenkins
Columbia University Press
, 2005
The fragmenting of habitats is endangering animal populations and degrading or destroying many plant populations throughout the world. To address this problem, conservationists have increasingly turned to biological corridors, areas of land set aside to facilitate the movement of species and ecological processes. However, while hundreds of corridor initiatives are under way worldwide, there is little practical information to guide their design, ...

Biodiversity is not only species diversity
This book contains useful information and can be seen as a complete guide for scientists and decision makers who are interested to protect species diversity. Unfortunately the author does not consider other levels of biodiversity in his book and whenever he referrs to them he does it from a species perspective only. I consider that genetic diversity aspects, population dynamics and their ...

Tries to do too much..
This is a very terse book. The stated purpose, according to the authors (Kevin Gaston and John Spicer at the University of Sheffield, UK) is to "cover as much ground in as few pages as possible." It succeeds, to a limited extent, by providing an outline to key issues associated with biodiversity research. It supplements this skeletal approach with numerous references for additional reading, ...

Scaling Biodiversity (Ecological Reviews)
Cambridge University Press
, 2007
We know that there are tens of millions of plant and animal species, but we do not know enough to be able to describe the patterns and processes that characterise the distribution of species in space, time and taxonomic groups. Given that in practical terms it is impossible to expect to be able to document biodiversity with any degree of completeness other approaches must be used. Scaling rules offer one possible framework, and this book offers ...
Conserving Forest Biodiversity: A Comprehensive Multiscaled Approach

While most efforts at biodiversity conservation have focused primarily on protected areas and reserves, the unprotected lands surrounding those area?the "matrix"?are equally important to preserving global biodiversity and maintaining forest health. In Conserving Forest Biodiversity, leading forest scientists David B. Lindenmayer and Jerry F. Franklin argue that the conservation of forest biodiversity requires a comprehensive and multiscaled ...
