Jawaharlal Nehru: A biography1 review
Sarvepalli Gopal

Oxford University Press, 1979

Simply Beautiful
This is truly a great biography. Gopal writes with thoughtfulness and class. It tells about the joys and pains in Nehru's life in a original fashion. The insightfulness and portrayal of characters are just too good. The only single drawback I can think of is that there is not a very distinct clarity about events in Nehru's lifespan. But other than that, it's a good read for those interested in ...

The Facts : A Novelist's Autobiography6 reviews
Philip Roth

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1988

An Autobiography Unlike Any Other
In this short, fascinating book Roth narrates the story of his life up to the publication of "Portnoy's Complaint." Then, in a long epilogue, Nathan Zuckerman (Roth's fictional alter-ego) critiques Roth's account, pointing out omissions and biases and attacking the "public relations tone" of the manuscript. If you have ever felt the sting of your outraged conscience, or laughed at how you trip ...

Adolf Hitler: Eine Biographie in Texten, Bildern, Dokumenten1 review
Christian Zentner

Delphin, 1989

Good photographs, some interesting views
Photo books on Hitler are a decidedly mixed bag. Either you get a true winner with rare shots, or you get a limping dog entry with the same old photos you've seen five million times. This book is on the high end of that scale. It will help if you read German with this book, but it's not necessary. The bulk of the book consists of photos of Hitler and photocopies of signatures and places related ...

Fidel Castro. Eine Biographie.6 reviews
Volker Skierka

Rowohlt Tb., 2002

A very good read!
I thought this book was quite good. I remember that when I bought it I read a review stating the the book was outstanding, but the reviewer didn't like the fact that the author kept travelling through time instead of providing a chronological approach to the biography. I actually liked this book better for this reason, partly. Volker Skierka does write the book chronologically, but also skips ...

Biographie de Celine Dion3 reviews
Georges-Hebert Germain, Germain Georges-Hebert

Libre Expression, 1997

If you can read French and like Celine, this is the best!
This is an excellent biography of the pop diva. It also includes bio information about her husband and about their incredible romance. She has come a long way since she started singing at the age of 12; this book chronicles how she did it and who she met along the way. It's an interesting read if you're a fan, but it's also interesting if you'd like to know how someone gets from nowhere to a ...

The Apprentice Mage, 1865-1914 (W.B. Yeats: A Life, Vol. 1)4 reviews
R. F. Foster

Oxford University Press, USA, 1998

The Definitive Yeats Biography
R.F. Foster's two-volume biography (second volume to come in 2000) is a model of articulate and knowledgable scholarship, arguably comparable to the great biographies of Joyce and Wilde written by Richard Ellman. Foster's work leaves nothing to be desired. It easily excels previous Yeats biographies written by Cootes, Jeffares, etc.

Niels Henrik Abel and his Times2 reviews
Arild Stubhaug

Springer, 2000

Excellent
This is an excellent book about the norwegian mathematical genius Niels Henrik Abel. This book is also very painfull to read, since it is about a man who dies at only 26 years of age, just before he is to reach to glory. It's a tragedy. But none the less what he accomplish in his life is just tremendous. This is a real book. And it will not leave you unaffected.

Virginia Woolf1 review
James King

Hamish Hamilton Ltd, 1994

See my review
of Hermione Lee's biography of Virginia Woolf. Lee's bio is probably the gold standard, but James King's biography of VW is a great follow-on. King was willing to write much more graphically about VW's sexual frustrations, flings, and no-holds-barred quotes of VW regarding the same.

M.C. Escher: Een biographie1 review
Wim Hazeu

Meulenhoff, 1998

See Hazeu's Film
This is only available in Dutch, unfortunately. I very much wish this would be translated into English. Hazeu played a major role in a video documentary that coincided with the release of this book. The video is available in English, at Amazon.com, and I recommend it highly. "The Life and Works of M.C. Escher" (Jan Dosdriesz/Wim Hazeu, Acorn Media, 1998, 60 min). This video was ...

Joachim Peiper (1915-1976): SS-Standartenfuhrer : eine Biographie (Soldatenschicksale des 20. Jahrhunderts ...2 reviews
Jens Westemeier

Biblio, 1996

Westemeier is a disgraced & cashiered ex officer
He has a hidden agenda against the Wehrmacht since his dishonorable dismissal from the Heer for gross indecencies. So caveat emptor! Btw, the above reviewer under the name of "reader" from Germany is actually the author, Westemeier himself, who's shamelessly plugging his own work here under a pseudonym.

The Laughing Christ2 reviews
Reverend Ellen Wallace Douglas

Trafford Publishing, 2003

My, my, my....
Reviewer #1, who awarded one star, so hung up on the etiquette of chaneling, with all the priestly protocols implied, made me rush to buy this book. I'm real glad I did. None is so dangerous as those who are thoroughly convinced that they're right. This guy wasn't.

Goebbels. Eine Biographie.7 reviews
Ralf Georg Reuth

Piper, 2000

hard cold look at propogandist
Settle in and concentrate on this slow hard look at Goebbels. If you are into detail on National Socialist interparty politics, this is the book. This guy was pure evil. He is the only figure surrounding Hitler that can actually eclipse the Fuhrer's ugliness.

Leichhardt: Die ganze Geschichte von F.W. Ludwig Leichhardt, Traumer, Forscher und Entdeckungsreisender in ...2 reviews
Hans Wilhelm Finger

Niedersachsische Staats- und Universitatsbibliothek Gottingen, 1999

A collector's item
The author, or the chronicler, as H.W. Finger refers to himself throughout the book, has managed to achieve an extraordinary re-telling of the life of Ludwig Leichhardt. He subtitles it "The Whole Story", and the whole story it is. H.W. Finger's research astonishes in its detail. From the early years of Leichhardt's life in Germany and his travels in Europe to his arrival in Australia and his ...
