Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson 2110 reviews Mitch Albom
Broadway, 2002
Tuesdays with Bill Tuesdays with Morrie is about a professor (Morrie), his former student (Mitch), and their final "class" with one another as the professor is in the final stages of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Mitch taped their discussions together and transcribed them into the book while throwing in slices of college memories of Morrie and other seemingly inconsequential moments that add to the humanity of this ...

Mr. Popper's Penguins 129 reviews Richard Atwater, Florence Atwater
Little, Brown Young Readers, 1992
Our first successful read-aloud I had tried many different books from Black Beauty to Little Britches to enrich our homeschool literature time.
No joy. Of course, to be fair, it's worth mentioning that my children are still all 6 and younger (all five of them!)
When we did a thematic unit study on penguins, I came across this book in our local homeschool store, and it was a HIT! They all begged me to read "just one more ...

Happy Birthday to You! (Classic Seuss) 32 reviews Dr. Seuss
Random House Books for Young Readers, 1959
"Happy Birthday To You!" Instead of purchasing birthday cards this year, I purchased several books and wrote a personal message inside the cover. I then passed it around at the birthday parties and invited the guests to also write a message. This will be a wonderful keepsake item for my children and my nieces and nephews.

Bird Songs: 250 North American Birds in Song 163 reviews Les Beletsky
Chronicle Books, 2006
Bird Songs book review I received this book as a gift a few years ago, and since then, I have given 4 of them as gifts to my bird-loving friends! I also shared it with a friend who just turned 3 years old. She enjoyed learning the names of the birds and the sounds they make. I have learned to identify birds by their sounds, without even seeing them!

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! 191 reviews
Hyperion Press, 2003
For all the family I came across this book when my wife found it on the shelf in a local bookshop.
She read it and encouraged our son to stop dancing around the bookstands and concentrate and read it.
Although he prefers video games he loved it.
When I met up with them, he was so enthusiastic that he persuaded me to read it.
My daughter then loved it when she had stopped looking at 'her favourite ...

Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die 205 reviews Chip Heath, Dan Heath
Random House, 2007
A superb book for teachers and school leaders Chip and Dan Heath have written a priceless book, full of wisdom and great stories about what makes for effective teaching and leadership. It's not the razzle-dazzle of our teaching that makes a difference, they say, but whether we incorporate six key characteristics. I've been in the education business for almost 40 years and I learned a LOT from this book. Highly recommended!

Pep in your step! This is a put a pep-in-your-step writing book. It's really a book with instructions on having a WRITING life. I'm still in the thick of it but I've never laughed so hard or felt so motivated by a book to write.

The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (Oprah's Book Club) 154 reviews Carson McCullers
Mariner, 2004
A Book for All Ages This is a great story for people of all ages. As a teenager, I felt at one with the antagonist of the story. As an adult I see her transition more clearly than before. It is also a reminder of the power of the emotions of adolescence and those first real learning experiences, something I hope I will never forget.

A Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern and Central North America 55 reviews
Houghton Mifflin, 2002
extremely helpful for the new birder I have been watching the birds play around in my back yard all my life, but I am brand new at identifying them. It is much more challenging than I expected; I had no idea how many species there are or how complex their markings and other identifiers are. I've always considered myself to be a fairly quick learner, but bird watching nearly stumped me ... until I found this field guide. Those little ...

National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, Fifth Edition 44 reviews Jon L. Dunn, Jonathan Alderfer
National Geographic, 2006
National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America--a review. This book is first-rate. I tend to favor wildlife books that depict their subjects in paintings and drawings, rather than photos, and this book is rich in mini-masterpieces. I haven't yet gotten into bird-watching, but the book transcends those who use this as a field guide. Now I can sit in the comfort of my den and enjoy all the glory of Nature's bird treasures. Whether one likes to explore ...

Owl Moon 53 reviews Jane Yolen
Philomel, 1987
Worthy of an Award - a review of "Owl Moon" I like Jane Yolen's work - the children do too (lol). But Owl Moon is probably the most poetic of her works that we have read. The word choice and imagery is wonderful; soft and soothing. You can hear the crunch of snow, and feel the biting cold.
Like the others I give it 5 stars, and would add that it makes for a good bed-time book.
Five Stars. Top notch Read-aloud. Artwork is nice, ...

The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America 60 reviews David Allen Sibley, Rick Cech
Knopf, 2003
Excellent Field Guide for Young Birdwatchers My Uncle, G. Max White, gave my son a hand-crafted peanut butter feeder that he'd made and stained. He explained to his great-nephew, in specific detail, the kinds of birds he would start to see. We hung the feeder outside my son's window and within three days the birds started to arrive. My son was elated! We decided to add a birdseed feeder, a woodpecker feeder, a finch feeder, and a ...
