Bless Me, Ultima193 reviews
Rudolfo Anaya

Grand Central Publishing, 1999

Bless You Anaya
In this beautifully written coming of age tale, Anaya delivers part of the Mexican/American experience. The loss of innocence in the story refers to a religious quandry for Toni, a six year old boy. Should he adopt his mother's culture and become a priest or should he become like his father's family, the Marezes, and wander the plains as a cowboy? Should he accept the Catholic faith brought by ...

To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings27 reviews
John O'Donohue

Doubleday, 2008

Love this Book
I absolutely LOVE this book! My husband & I are planning for a family, when I got this book in the mail I opened randomly to a page somewhere in the middle and magically turned right to the blessing for "The Mother-To-Be"! So amazing! My yoga instructor reads us passages from this book sometimes (how I heard about it) and everytime she does, the peaceful, blessed effect is palpable.

God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian50 reviews
Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Washington Square Press, 2001

Round Trips
The zany straight shooter, Vonnegut, had Dr. Kevorkian arrange for "near death experiences", round trips to the pearly gates, where he was free to interview whoever he pleased, such as John Brown, Louis Armstrong, Shakespeare, Adolf Hitler, and Sir Isaac Newton. All was reported in forty-five second spots on radio station WNYC. Respected humanist that he was, he took delightful digs at moral ...

Bless This Food: Ancient and Contemporary Graces from Around the World2 reviews
Adrian Butash

New World Library, 2007

Bless this Book and the Food for Thought+
This is an excellent little prayer book on various ancient and modern graces. It's not just a European christian benedictory ,but from differnet cultures ,around the world. In our modern world,we have really lost the religious experience of eating. With our fast food society all around us,the companionship of 'breaking bread' with the family and friends,is a rare sacred event indeed thesedays.I've ...

God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater80 reviews
Kurt Vonnegut

Dial Press Trade Paperback, 1998

It's hard to critique Vonnegut
Vonnegut is one of those genius writers that you can't help but love. "Slaughterhouse 5" was my first venture into the realm of Vonnegut, but I have to say that I think I enjoyed this tale much more. Perhaps because the topic is closer to my heart, or perhaps I was able to identify more closely with the characters, I found this novel to be both thought provoking and utterly hysterical. The ...

The Power of Your Words: How God Can Bless Your Life Through the Words You Speak6 reviews
Robert Morris

Be Blessed
This book presents how powerful "words" are to everything and every area in your life. Any parent or spouse will find this book to be extremely helpful in having a home that is full of love, respect, and discipline. Rev. Morris shares such straight forward renderings of his heart and adherence to the word of God, that is is entirely refreshing. It is a book that I can hardly put down, but do ...

Bless Your Heart, Tramp: And Other Southern Endearments26 reviews
Celia Rivenbark

St. Martin's Griffin, 2006

Great southern humor
I bought this book as a gift for a friend my age. After I had received the book myself as a gift, I knew she could relate to many of the stories in the book and would enjoy as much as I. It is typical of life in the south for people of middle age. Most enjoyable!

Church God Blesses, The5 reviews
Jim Cymbala

Zondervan, 2002

A Soggy Sermon Worth Reading
One reviewer called this book a soggy sermon. I can't agree. I found it to be a challenge to the complacent Christianity that is so prevelant today. Jim Cymbala, as always, keeps it simple and right to the point. The illustrations, scriptural applications, admonitions, and encouragement were very relevant to today.

The Life God Blesses: Weathering The Storms Of Life That Threaten The Soul5 reviews
Gordon MacDonald

Thomas Nelson, 1997

Whatever Storms May Come
The Life God Blesses is a must read. I have been continually challenged to be proactive. I find myself watching for warning signs and making every effort to be prepared for the sudden changes life brings. I have weathered a recent storm that shattered my emotional foundation. The loss of loved one to leukemia was unexpected and sudden. Having read and understood the importance of anchoring ...

The Horrors We Bless: Rethinking the Just-war Legacy (Facets Series)4 reviews
Daniel C. Maguire

Fortress Press, 2007

Thorough, Concise, Provocative
"The Horrors We Bless: Rethinking the Just-War Legacy" Daniel Maguire, Professor of Moral Theological Ethics at Marquette University, aims "to challenge the seductive power of war that so grips and hobbles our imaginations." A major cause, he argues, is "Just-war" Theory. Its original purpose -- to limit, control, and even avoid warfare -- now is commonly subverted to justify and ...

god bless the gargoyles13 reviews
Dav Pilkey

Voyager Books, 1999

Now more than ever...
Today is the Friday following the tragic attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. For some reason, I went through my stacks of children's books this evening (I'm a teacher BTW), and I had to pull this one out. I've never been able to get through this story/poem without my voice cracking and tears in my eyes, but this evening - it was full scale balling! The words and images just seem ...

Bless Us All: A Child's Yearbook of Blessings4 reviews

Aladdin, 2001

Fabulous!
We read this nightly with our 2 year old and 3-1/2 year old. They love finding the *right* page each night, and by mid-month they have the blessing memorized and they say it along with us. Then, towards the end of the month, as we grow weary of the same blessing every night, lo and behold it is a new month, and we get to learn a new one! This opens up so many avenues: prayers of ...

Space Clearing A-Z : How to Use Feng Shui to Purify and Bless Your Home7 reviews
Denise Linn

Hay House, 2001

Good guide book
This book is good for beginners. It's clear cut, easy to understand and gives choices on which ways are best for you. I like that each section is in small segments so you don't have to read a whole chapter in order to get the point. I keep going back to it as a guide.

Won't Let You Go Unless You Bless Me2 reviews
Andree Seu

World & Life Books, 2008

Disarming honesty in the struggles of a real-life Christian
A refreshingly honest look at a real-life Christian's struggle to be faithful in the messiness of life. More than that, it is the story of the faithfulness of her God, who in truth is the One who won't let her go.

Spark Notes Bless Me Ultima7 reviews
Rudolfo A. Anaya, SparkNotes Editors

SparkNotes, 2002

The carp, the goddess, who's "she", la Grande...
Recently, I've had the chance to read this novel through an english class which has brought out many new perspectives within the novel. This novel shows the importance of family and the balance and equality between life. The conflict with the Marez and Luna can be referred to a "Romeo/Juliet" Shakespearian drama. One of the good aspects of the book that I found was interesting engough was the ...
