First the Egg (Caldecott Honor Book and Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book (Awards))7 reviews
Laura Vaccaro Seeger

Roaring Brook Press, 2007

A concept journey: egg or chicken? chicken or egg?
Which came first--the chicken or the egg? Finally, someone is here to tell us. But the answer later. "First the egg," written and illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger, is a Caldecott honor winner for 2008 and an honor book for the Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss) Award. What makes it special? Both the artwork and the story, or actually, in this case, concepts that lead from one transformation ...

Flotsam (Caldecott Medal Book)78 reviews
David Wiesner

Clarion Books, 2006

In the eye of the mind...
David Wiesner is the Stephen King of illustrated children's books: off-kilter, weird, and supernatural. However, Wiesner underlies all he draws with humor, joy, spunk. He has won the Caldecott Gold Medal three times, for Tuesday, The Three Pigs, and "Flotsam." This is what is written on the front book flap: "Flotsam: Something that floats. If it floats in the ocean, it may wash up on the ...

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!191 reviews
Mo Willems

Hyperion Press, 2003

For all the family
I came across this book when my wife found it on the shelf in a local bookshop. She read it and encouraged our son to stop dancing around the bookstands and concentrate and read it. Although he prefers video games he loved it. When I met up with them, he was so enthusiastic that he persuaded me to read it. My daughter then loved it when she had stopped looking at 'her favourite ...

Robin Page, Steve Jenkins

Great book for interaction!

Owl Moon53 reviews
Jane Yolen

Philomel, 1987

Worthy of an Award - a review of "Owl Moon"
I like Jane Yolen's work - the children do too (lol). But Owl Moon is probably the most poetic of her works that we have read. The word choice and imagery is wonderful; soft and soothing. You can hear the crunch of snow, and feel the biting cold. Like the others I give it 5 stars, and would add that it makes for a good bed-time book. Five Stars. Top notch Read-aloud. Artwork is nice, ...

Kitten's First Full Moon61 reviews

Greenwillow, 2004

A Simple, Crazy Stroll and Adventure With the Kitten
I think in most cases color more than likely fits the bill to get the attention of kids. But in this case, simple black and white illustrations do so well as far as a night story involving a little kitten. Kevin Henkes does a great job throughout the whole thing. Plus it kept my daughter's attention the whole way through, and that's what I'm always looking for. The story is quite simple. It is ...

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type198 reviews
Doreen Cronin

Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, 2000

Perfect for Preschoolers
Absolutely for preschoolers. My son loved this book almost as much as I did. Everything about this book was adorable- the silliness, the electric blankets, and the diving board. He and I couldn't stop laughing. The reader (most likely the adult) will love how often the neutral party isn't neutral at all. I'm an animal lover, so this book will always have a soft spot in my heart.

The Red Book (Caldecott Honor Book)31 reviews
Barbara Lehman

Houghton Mifflin, 2004

Amazing Book
My two year old daughter loves this book. She loves to make up the story herself, and she sees new things in the pictures each time she reads it. I wish there were more books like this, but she has had it for a few months now, and she still enjoys it. The illustrations are beautiful and expressive. She walks around the house with this book as if she's the little girl in the story. It's ...

Make Way for Ducklings (Viking Kestrel Picture Books)50 reviews
Robert McCloskey

Viking Juvenile, 1941

A must before going to Boston
Prior to a planned trip to Boston, I purchased Make Way For Ducklings for my grandchildren who were three and a half and five and a half at the time. Their mom was running in the Boston Marathan. Knowing that we would be taking them to the Public Gardens and they would see the "ducklings"..this was a perfect history lesson written so well for little ones and adults to learn...Highly recommended

In the Night Kitchen (Caldecott Collection)99 reviews

HarperCollins, 1996

A Multi-generational classic
In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak was one of the books that we read over and over and over again to our children. All of us can quote much of it by heart. My son (now 30) was a daredevil from day one and he especially identified with this book. This copy was purchased for our newest granddaughter's 1st birthday, who is already a climber and looks like she might become another Mickey ...

Henry's Freedom Box (Caldecott Honor Book)13 reviews
Ellen Levine

Scholastic Press, 2007

Spare story of one man's struggle against slavery
This story documents the slavery and eventual freedom of one man. Henry and his brothers and sisters work for a good master. However, on his deathbed, the master gives Henry to his son, separating Henry from the rest of his family forever. Henry works well in the master's son's tobacco factory, presumably avoiding the beatings of the foreman. Later, he meets Nancy, a slave of another master. ...

David Gets in Trouble29 reviews

Blue Sky Press, 2002

It's Not His Fault!
David's always in trouble, whether he pulls the cat's tail-he says she likes it- or sticks his finger in the cake-leaving evidence all over his face. This book is just as cute as the other 'No, David' books. Once again, David Shannon helps every child- and adult- understand David's world with his simple, yet beautiful pictures and simple phrases. My boys love it and I do, too.

Teacher's Review
This is a review/evaluation of the book as part of an in depth study on children's picture books. I am a third grade teacher and I use this book in my classroom because no kid is ever too old to read a great story like this. I truly think it is a classic! Evaluation: In addition to the wonderful illustrations, this Caldecott Honor book is also a heart warming story that is very appropriate ...
