A Place Called Canterbury: Tales of the New Old Age in America10 reviews
Dudley Clendinen

Viking Adult, 2008

A must read for anyone with aging parents
This is a marvelous book. Beautifully written and extremely poignant. Being a southerner myself, I didn't find the dialect annoying. It was spot on. As Linda Ellerbee said on the dust jacket, I want to give a copy of this book to all of my friends and family. I laughed, cried and hated for it to end.

Catherine, Called Birdy (rpkg) (Trophy Newbery)282 reviews
Karen Cushman

HarperTrophy, 1995

wonderful romp through medieval england
I read this book in middle school and it has remained one of my favorites ever since. Karen Cushman really brings the Middle Ages alive, sparing nothing for the sensibilities of modern readers. Castles were neither clean nor comfortable by modern standards, and Cushman makes this point abundantly clear. She also creates a realistic cast of characters who fit their time but are still ...

A Bear Called Paddington17 reviews
Michael Bond

Houghton Mifflin, 2001

Fantastic!
A classic! I loved Paddington as a child and I'm thrilled to have this in our CD collection. (I'd even listen without the kids!). Stephen Fry reads the stories very well.

A Place Called Freedom64 reviews
Ken Follett

Fawcett, 1996

A Place Called Freedom
As always, another one of Ken Follett's books that I loved. This book takes you back to Scotland in the 1700's. Even though the book may have had some predictable parts, it was hard to put this book down. The story begins in the coal mines of Scotland and takes you through a beautifully told story of love, lust, greed and envy. A must read for all of Ken Follett fans.

A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive1903 reviews
Dave Pelzer

HCI, 1995

The Child Called It
The Child Called It is the saddest book. It makes you cry. The characters are Dave, his brothers, his crazy mom, and his dad. Dave never got food.He only got leftovers. Where Dave lived, you do not want to know. If Dave had to live with his mom, he will die. In The Child Called It, there were no adventures at all!! I like the beginning of book . My least favorite character is mom. So start ...

It's Called Work for a Reason!: Your Success Is Your Own Damn Fault53 reviews
Larry Winget

Gotham, 2007

Common Sense Reminder
I bought this book because it looked interesting and educational. I wasn't disappointed. While most of the ideas presented are common sense, they are principals that we forget to live. Larry Winget reminds us to live those principals and, no, it is not a gentle reminder. This book addresses poor performance by employees, shoddy customer service, unethical behavior, and personal success at ...

It's Called a Breakup Because It's Broken: The Smart Girl's Break-Up Buddy123 reviews
Greg Behrendt, Amiira Ruotola-Behrendt

Broadway, 2006

Loved it!
I was given, "He's just not that into you" after I left my ex because he couldn't commit to our relationship long-term. I recently broke up with another Man because our relationship was broken. Although I made the decision to end the relationship, and saw the writing on the wall, it was still an adjustment that caused me some mental anguish. I read the book hoping that it would inspire me to ...

A CHARMING MUSICAL MOUSE
A Mouse Called Wolf comes from the inventive mind of Dick King-Smith who gave us Babe: The Gallant Pig. After watching his friends race across piano keys, wee Wolfgang Amadeus Mouse throws back his head and sings. Eventually he uses his voice to rescue the lady of the house. A Desert Called Peace30 reviews
Tom Kratman

Baen, 2007

The Genius of Kratman continues
This book appeared on my Amazon site with an inquiry to buy. Mine, unfortunately, is already bought and read---that means I can't have the fun of starting afresh (hardcover, of course). It is interesting to read some of the negative reviews. Let's look at this from the beginning, shall we: 1) Islamo-fascism wishes to kill us---for proof, listen to them without excusing them. Why everyone ...

The Legion Carries On
Carnifex (2007) is the second SF novel in the Carrera series, following A Desert Called Peace. In the previous volume, Patrick got another lesson about family vengeance. Then the FSC gave him responsibility for Pumbadeta and lent him FS troops to hold his old ZOR. First, the Legion took out the bridges and surrounded the city. The Legion let out the sick and injured, pregnant and nursing, ...

Mary, Called Magdalene95 reviews
Margaret George

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2003

Based on a true story...
You probably know the story, or at least scant details, but you don't know enough for the story to be spoiled and I won't give it away either because in this case, the delight is in the details. This isn't one of those shameless books that base a premise on a disproved hoax and play up to the conspiracy crowd for sensation and controversy just to make a quick & dirty buck. No, "Mary Called ...

Toys Go Out: Being the Adventures of a Knowledgeable Stingray, a Toughy Little Buffalo, and Someone Called ...19 reviews
Emily Jenkins

Schwartz & Wade, 2006

A Huge Hit in Our House!
My 7-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter demanded I read this to them again. This is the first time they have ever requested a chapter book be read a second time. They wait for their favorite lines and speak them along with me, laughing the whole time. My daughter plans to write a letter to the author asking for more stories about the toys, also a first. What a wonderful book!

There Once Was a Tree Called Deru

HarperCollins e-books, 2002

A new take on living wholistic life from a spiritual teacher of the Australian Aboriginal people. There Once Was a Tree Called Deru is a journey through one man's dreaming. Kakkib li'Dthia is a wonderful and dynamic storyteller, teacher, physician and philosopher. A Man Called Intrepid22 reviews
William Stevenson

The Lyons Press, 2000

A splendid and not difficult read
I read that Valerie Plame had read this book and that it made a difference in her choice of careers, and was curious about a book that could have such an impact. I found it fascinating and an easy read, and have to compare some of the reviews to the famed contemporary critic of Mozart who complained there were too many notes. This book explained so much that I have been looking for in trying to ...

A Community Called Atonement (Living Theology)5 reviews
Scot McKnight

Abingdon Press, 2007

Brilliant Overview of the Atonement
Scot McKnight is slowly finding his way to the top of reading lists for many interested in theology, and rightly so [he is quickly gaining ground on my reading list]. "A Community Called Atonement" is both a sweeping overview of the divergent theories of atonement, and a proposal for bringing the divergent views of atonement under a single umbrella of Christ's redeeming work in the world to ...

A Place Called Canterbury

Viking, 2008

In 1994 New York Times writer Dudley Clendinen's mother-a Southern matron of iron will but creaking bones-sold her house and moved to Canterbury Tower, a geriatric apartment building with full services and a nursing wing in Tampa Bay. There she landed in a microcosm of the New Old Age. Canterbury was filled not just with old Tampa neighbors but also with strangers from across the country. Wealthy, middle class, or barely afloat; Christian, ...
