The Best American Short Stories 2007 (The Best American Series (TM)) 21 reviews
Houghton Mifflin, 2007
What a wonderful book! The best book I have read in a long time. All of the stories stay with you after you read them and make you think about them and what they had to tell. With some of them I didn't like the style they were written in but that is why it is a collection, it cannot cater to everybodies tastes. With others I was so taken away that I am trying to find more from their authors and also trying to learn ...

The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Short Fiction: 50 North American Stories Since 1970 (Touchstone Books) 1 review Michael Martone
Touchstone, 2007
Great short story anthology There are so many anthologies, it's hard to convince people to buy more then one. But this collection really does include some brilliant pieces. If you don't have a stack of anthologies already, this one is worth the money. Almost every story is worth multiple reads. And no great short story writer is missing.

Divisadero (Vintage International) 64 reviews Michael Ondaatje
Vintage, 2008
"Everything is collage" Michael Ondaatje writes in his new novel, "[T]here is the hidden presence of others in us, even those we have known briefly. We contain them for the rest of our lives, at every border that we cross." At one level "Divisadero" is such a collage, spreading scenarios across more than one hundred years and several continents. Initially seemingly disconnected events and individual stories are ...

Looking for Anne of Green Gables: The Story of L. M. Montgomery and Her Literary Classic 1 review Irene Gammel
St. Martin's Press, 2008
The definitive study of how Anne of Green Gables came about. I recently made a trip to Prince Edward Island and picked up a number of books related to L.M. Montgomery and Anne of Green Gables. I actually had passed on this one because I saw that Amazon had such a fantastic price on it. Anyway, as an Anne of Green Gables and L.M. Montgomery junkie, I've read practically every book on Maud and her work and this one is by far the best. The research in this ...

Blindsight 64 reviews Peter Watts
Tor Books, 2008
Hard Sci-Fi with brilliant characterizations 'Blindsight' is a hard sci-fi novel well written enough for everyone to enjoy. Unique characters keep the mood while detailed descriptions set the atmosphere.
First let me introduce you to the eclectic cast:
Theseus - a ship with AI whose "body parts" (such as hatches) have reflexes. She's the Captain of the expedition.
Siri Keeton - Half of Siri's brain was removed when he was young, ...

Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda 75 reviews Roméo Dallaire, Samantha Power
Da Capo Press, 2004
Well written book about what never should have happened This is a long book, but still you don't get bored while you are reading it. Mainly I just got upset as I read how Romeo Dallaire tried to stop this genocide from happening. There was an informant telling him that the Hutu extreemists planned to kill the Tutsis. The UN's reaction was to order Dallaire to inform Rwanda officials about what he had been told. This was a very grave mistake, since ...

The Best American Mystery Stories 2007 (The Best American Series (TM)) 3 reviews
Houghton Mifflin, 2007
Always a Winner The Best American Mystery Stories series is always one of the year's highlights and the 2007 collection is dark, edgy, innovative and exciting. Many old favorites are onhand but so are many new and exciting writers. Is some of the subject matter disturbing? Absolutely! From animal killing to soccer-mom prostitutes, this is a collection that doesn't play it safe. Yet the consistancy of quality is ...

The Cellist of Sarajevo 11 reviews Steven Galloway
Riverhead Hardcover, 2008
A Marvelous Book of Enduring Themes Amidst War This book alternately mesmerizes and inflames. Its depiction of the siege of Sarajevo manages to tell something universal and quotidian at the same time. Its universal themes of life, death, hope, and despair are delicately balanced by its success in providing a sense of the everyday lives of a handful of Sarajevans seeking to negotiate the dangerous streets and byways of this war-torn city. ...

Someone Knows My Name: A Novel 26 reviews Lawrence Hill
W. W. Norton, 2007
The Best I've Read in Years Usually when I read historical fiction I find that the history is interesting, but the writing is poor; or the reverse. In this case, I found both the writing and history to be superb. It's the first time in years I've read a story so well told that is based on so much research. I can't wait for the paperback to come out so that I can buy it for friends.

Before Green Gables 26 reviews Budge Wilson
Putnam Adult, 2008
Wonderful read! Not really a kid's book, but truly Anne of Green Gables! A tear-jerker in places, but with spots that show you that even the most hopeless places there is light and the right heroine can find happiness and love even in the grim-ist homes. I picked it up and read it in one day, I just couldn't put it down!

Personal Demon (Women of the Otherworld, Book 8) 37 reviews Kelley Armstrong
Spectra, 2008
Personal Demon I loved this book. Kelley Armstrong wrote a short story called Chaotic about this narrator Hope Adams which was like an introduction to the characters in this book. I suggest you read the short story first. You will learn to love the characters and want to read more. Then you will love this book. I thought it was exciting and the plot twist caught me off guard. I couldn't put it down.

DAW Hardcover, 2008
Life and Death In the Tunnels Valor's Trial (2008) is the fourth combat SF novel in the Confederation series, following The Heart of Valor. In the previous volume, Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr whacked off the arm of a Marine major and stuffed it into a body bag. When it combined with the rest of the alien, Torin had a face-to-knob conversation with it. Then the rescuers appeared.
In this novel, Gunnery Sergeant Kerr is ...

What a family! This book was just so enjoyable and hilarious but yet so beautifully written. From the beginning till the end Ondaatje opens up to the reader (in a journal entry) this magical and beautiful world. Onddatje's adroitness to include the reader right there in the conversations he has with various family member will bring you to tears. His captivating sytle takes the reader back in time with him ...

Pirate Sun: Book Three of Virga 3 reviews Karl Schroeder
Tor Books, 2008
Schroeder continues to get better Over the years, many writers have featured sword fights in space. Some have even featured pirates ships, pre-industrial cities, and so on. But typically, this involves either ignoring the illogic of the situation or hand-waving about levels of shield, etc. Karl Schroeder took a third path, one with an explanation that makes sense. Virga is a planet-size ballon in space. It's filled with air, ...
