Crystal Rain27 reviews
Tobias S. Buckell

Tor Books, 2006

Original and fun
Crystal Rain is a strong debut. Tobias Buckell has taken the lost civilization genre of science fiction and created a wonderful story. The characters are mysterious and compelling, and John deBrun cuts a dashing and heroic figure whose own personal worries give the reader and emotional connection. But the characters are not deeply emotional. There is some philosophical discussion, but it is ...

An exceptionally useful and beautiful work of art!
This is an absolutely fascinating book on the Caribbean - the content, the writing and the photography are all superb. Wonderful period romance on the high seas!
This is a wonderful period story about two women who find love in one another and the lengths they will go to in order to be together. The setting is the Caribbean in the days of Pirates and women who often had to hide their sexual identity to be able to work for a fare wage. You will be able to smell the salty air, feel the sun on your face and fall in love with the women in this story. I ...

Clean, Sweet Wind: Sailing with the Last Boatmakers of the Carribean4 reviews
Douglas C. Pyle

International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press, 1998

Well-written account of a fascinating subject
I love this book, and I haven't even finished it yet. I'll admit I'm biased, as I know the Grenadines well and have long been fascinated with the traditional watercraft. But anyone can appreciate the way Pyle develops his story, with a low-key humour that bubbles through the text. Good pics too. The chapter on whaling is fascinating. Straight out of Moby Dick! A thoroughly good read.

Havana and the Atlantic in the Sixteenth Century (Envisioning Cuba)
Alejandro de la Fuente

The University of North Carolina Press, 2008

Havana in the 1550s was a small coastal village with a very limited population that was vulnerable to attack. Using all available local Cuban sources, including parish registries and notary, town council, and treasury records, Alejandro de la Fuente provides the first examination of ...

Complete Book of Carribean Cooking3 reviews
Elisabeth Ortiz

Ballantine Books, 1986

A wonderful mix of caribbean cooking from all the islands.
When I bought this book I was searching for receipes from Puerto Rico. Being Puerto Rican and having been raised in the United States, I learned to love all the native dishes that my mother would fix for us. As a new military bride I soon discovered that even though I knew how to cook some of the staples i.e. arroz con gandules, carne guisada, etc., there was a lot I didn't know. My mother ...

Underwater Paradise: Red Sea, the Maldives, Malaysia and the Carribean (Secret of the Sea)1 review
Angelo Mojetta, Andrea Ferrari, ...

White Star, 2008

The ramblings of an amateur with a camera.
There is often considerable confusion whenever White Star publishing of Italy produce yet another book about the sea which is aimed primarily at scuba divers. Firstly, each book gets treated to a particular brand of Italian English which is hard to understand and makes reading the item very difficult indeed. Secondly, they appear to use a small number of truly excellent underwater photographers ...
