Excellent reference for the 19th century cotton industry
This book is unique in its subject matter. It helps today's reader understand the importance of the entire cotton production, trade, and manufacture. Ms. Willoughby writes that the cotton trade's impact rippled over many other segments of the national economy and she quotes from another writer that this fiber has been called the most significant ingredient in the economic life of the whole ...

Funny, Sad, and Everything In Between
While this is strictly a work of fiction, the town of Chattahoochee is real. In fact, it is the town in which author Rhett Devane lived as a child. From the "about the author" insert: "Rhett DeVane is a true southerner, born and raised in the piney woods of the north Florida panhandle. Originally from Chattahoochee, Florida, she now lives in Tallahassee where she is completing a series of ...

An impressive compilation of verse
Chattahoochee is an impressive compilation of verse by poetry award winner Patrick Phillips who is currently a Henry Mitchell MacCracken Fellow at New York University. This is poetry that is spare, sophisticated, and above all, memorable. The Flood: Two-thirds of earth, and most of us, is water./Come life, come death's black, fathomless water.//At the mirror I try to picture the soul./I raise my ...

It is better than Cold Mountain; a much better story.
Chattahoochee by Rich Haney is the best Civil War novel I've read and I've read many, including Cold Mountain, Red Badge of Courage, Killer Angels, etc. Chattahoochee has three lovely but eclectic characters -- a Mississippi woman, her baby girl and a Union officer. The young woman and little girl, displaced by the Civil War after the husband and father goes off to fight and die for the ...

An Excellent Study of the Native American Cultures of West Florida
John Hann's works are wonderfully accessible to both the specialized student of Florida history and the general reader, and this book is no exception. Hann's studies of the Native American cultures of what today is the Florida panhandle and Alabama, particularly his study of the groups ancestral to the Creek Confederacy, is particularly helpful in understanding the dynamics of the struggles ...

A fascinating book that I could not put down!
This book provides an eyewitness account of the events which were going on in the southeastern states, and probably over the rest of the country, during the period when the Indian people were being degraded and their culture destoyed and replaced by the European. It paints a picture, through the eyes of literate travelers, of the wonderful wilderness that was the American south as it gave way ...

More gripping than a novel
You would hardly believe that this is not a novel. The story is gripping and the author's telling of it is masterful. Bourke not only relates the facts of the case, she evokes the spirit of the age. What is more, she skillfully portrays how folk beliefs and superstitions are intimately intertwined with power and the status quo. In a quasi-religious kind of way, the folk beliefs of the community ...

Comprehensive!
An excellent reference for anyone planning activities along or near the Chattahoochee. Only shortcoming is general lack of river section and lake maps. The extensive narrative descriptions of noteworthy sites and interesting areas are great and the provided directions help, but some more maps would be very beneficial.

New perspective on the South during the Civil War
This book contradicts the widely held belief that the South's lack of industry and men were the root of Confederate defeat during the American Civil War. Williams constructs a vivid and compelling theory of socio-economic conflicts within the South that ultimately led to its downfall. The author uses a variety of primary sources, including personal correspondence that humanizes the Civil ...

Not what I expected
I normally enjoy self help books but i found this one to be a bit on the dictatorship side. It provided some helpful info but it's not very free thinking, which if what i look for in spiritual books. I suggest books by Shakti Gawain for that kind of free thinking.

A great pictorial history of the CV!
An excellent reference on the CV! I have been looking forpictures like these for years. I remember the yellow engines and yardfull of boxcars in front of Cohen's that I saw as a kid. If I ever get around to building a model railroad of the CV, the pictures in this book and the track drawings available at the Archives will be my complete guide.
