Checkmate Vol. 2: Pawn Breaks (DC Comics)3 reviews
Greg Rucka

DC Comics, 2007

Check Out Checkmate, the Sequel
I reviewed Checkmate: A King's Game not too long ago, and I was pretty positive about it. There's a reason for that, and there's a reason the review for this book will be equally, if not more positive. That reason? Checkmate continues to be a great book. Volume 2, Pawn Breaks, deals with a couple different things left over from A King's Game - the mystery of Waller's hold on Fire and what ...

Simple Checkmates15 reviews
A.J. Gilliam

Ballantine Books, 1996

A core skill-builder for our school chess club
Our small year-round school (3rd-12th grade) has used this book regularly since the chess club was founded. New club members join every quarter but are generally not strong players, so they seldom reach checkmate opportunities in club play. We give each student a double-page spread (4 problems) to solve without marking up the book: we cover the answers, then students must point out the checkmate ...

Outsiders/Checkmate: Checkout1 review
Judd Winick, Greg Rucka

DC Comics, 2008

Great for DC lovers
I purchased this book because of the Checkmate portion of the book. I was not disappointed with any part of it. All the characters are really interesting and fun to watch. It was really interesting to see how Nightwing and Sasha Bordeaux worked together. If you enjoy either of these books I would recommend looking at this one.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Checkmate (Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell)38 reviews
David Michaels

Berkley, 2006

Tom Clancy's splinter cell CHECKMATE
This is one of Tom Clancy's best books that I have read. There is a detailed description of what is going on in the book. Sam Fisher is a Third Echelon special operative. Fisher must use stealth to overcome any obstacles in his path. Fisher uses his OPSAT (operational satellite uplink screen) to get maps of what he is dealing with. For example the Fisher had a layout of vessel named the Trego ...

Checkmate Vol. 1: A King's Game (DC Comics)5 reviews
Greg Rucka

DC Comics, 2007

Awesome Spy Series
I love this book. It's not a standard superhero read: you have to pay attention to the Checkmate roles, ranks and nomenclature at first (just like in a spy novel). Great tales, a cool alternate angle to the DC Universe. Rucka is writing a winner...

1001 Brilliant Ways to Checkmate (Chess Lovers' Library)46 reviews
Fred Reinfeld

Wilshire Book Company, 1971

The Heart and Soul of Chess in 1000 Brilliant Diagrams
No matter how good a strategic or a tactical chess player one is, the heart and soul of the game remains the surprise or unexpected checkmate. This book takes the reader through 1000 checkmates, all taken from actual grandmaster play. It proceeds in a graduated way from the less interesting mate-in-two, to the novel and more advance mates in up to seven moves ahead. The only drawbacks are that ...

Checkmate Vol. 3: Fall of the Wall (DC Comics)1 review
Greg Rucka

DC Comics, 2008

Words can't describe just how good Checkmate is
Perhaps the most surprising of DC's post-Infinite Crisis and 52 ongoing series' has been Greg Rucka's run on Checkmate, and Fall of the Wall, the third collected volume in the series, takes Rucka's espionage opera to even loftier heights. Amanda Waller finds herself with her back against the wall, and Mr. Terrific and Sasha Bordeaux may prove to be the biggest thorns in her side. Under Rucka's ...

More Chessercizes: Checkmate: 300 Winning Strategies for Players of All Levels13 reviews
Bruce Pandolfini

Fireside, 1991

A great puzzle book
I found this puzzle book to be very helpful. The positions are realistic with realistic variety (approximately an equal mix of kingside castled positions and "exposed king hunt" positions with few queenside positions). Unlike the Reinfeld 1001 Checkmates, each puzzle in this book tells you how many moves you need to make to reach checkmate. I found that this forces me to look more deeply at the ...

Fast paced government thriller (with romance)
If you enjoy fast paced books with intrigue and government inside angles...this is a great read. Fasten your seat belts and have fun! I normally do not read this type of literature, but enjoyed this romp. If you are a fan of The Last Templar, etc., you will want to read this book.

Checkmate: Sixth in the Legendary Lymond Chronicles34 reviews
Dorothy Dunnett

Vintage, 1997

'It is not one thing you seek, but two..'
This is the sixth and final novel in Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles. Like each of the novels in the series, the action is fast, absorbing and beautifully written. Lymond himself is dealing with the issues of nations and of monarchs while at the same time grappling with family secrets and finding that his own limits of endurance are being reached. Set against the backdrop of the marriage ...

May the "Deryni" never end!!!!!!!!
Someone once told me "Women can't write good fantasy because they're afraid to kill your favorite characters" ... I then introduced him to Katherine Kurtz and the Deryni. I never heard that statement again. I have been reading this epic saga over and over again for 20 years, and I will be reading them over and over again for the next 20 years. Katherine Kurtz's blending of "Magic" with ...
