Advanced Organic Chemistry21 reviews
Jerry March

John Wiley & Sons Inc, 1985

The Best Reference for Organic Chemistry
This is by far the best text I have found. Although it is considered a text book, it is more handy as a reference tool. I have seen no other book that contains more information than March's. This book is actually worth the price.

Toyota Production System: Beyond Large-Scale Production17 reviews
Taiichi Ohno

Productivity Press, 1988

Tell it like it is
There are many myths around the Toyota Production System (TPS). Ohno Taiichi merits my deepest respects, considering he was able almost a half century ago to observe and learn from others. Considering the simple target given to him, to "catch up with America" he studied in-depth the work of Ford and recognised the idea of copying the US supermarket system for his operational purpose. The book ...

The Serotonin Power Diet: Use Your Brain's Natural Chemistry to Cut Cravings, Curb Emotional Overeating, and ...19 reviews
Nina Frusztajer Marquis, Judith J. Wurtman

Rodale Books, 2006

The Serotinin Power Diet
I found Judith Wurtman's book The Serotinin Power Diet to be the only book that deals with what I consider, really counts: Hunger control. Through their year's of research at MIT they have learned what triggers binging and hunger and teaches you what to eat, before attending social events etc. It teaches you how to control you appetite so you can go into any situation and control yourself and ...

General Chemistry16 reviews
Linus Pauling

Dover Publications, 1988

Best introductory chemistry book out there.
This is by far the best introductory book I have seen so far. It is very concise and thorough. There are no flashy pictures or cool sidenotes with the practical applications of the concepts. But the basic concepts are very well explained with lots of helpful diagrams. Also, the price of the book is very good. Hooray for Dover Publications for publishing this masterpiece as such reasonable price!

Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos: With Applications to Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Engineering31 reviews
Steven H. Strogatz

Westview Press, 2001

Shockingly Readable
I bought this book as a textbook for a class, and I have to say that it is a surprisingly readable math book. The class only used the first few chapters, but I find myself flipping through the rest of the book and trying to understand more advanced material. This is a good book for a scientist who needs to learn linear and nonlinear dynamics but is a little intimidated. Keep in mind, this is a ...

The Art of Writing Reasonable Organic Reaction Mechanisms20 reviews
Robert B. Grossman

Springer, 2007

Excellent Book on Mechanisms
I bought this book to practice mechanisms because I'll be taking a physical organic class in the spring that uses them heavily. I used this book instead of sitting in on a sophomore organic class, because by job as a TA conflicted. Anyway, this book is extraordinary. Dr. Grossman has taught me so many things about how to write a correct mechanism and how to recognize a bad mechanism when I see ...

Dr. Folkman's War: Angiogenesis and the Struggle to Defeat Cancer26 reviews
Robert Cooke

Random House, 2001

Dr. Folkman is my hero -- a story better than SeaBiscuit!
This book by Robert Cooke is incredible! Mr. Cooke is able to explain to the average layperson the medical concepts of angeiogeneis conceived by the most under-valued person of our time: Dr. Judah Folkman. Dr. Folkman is to cancer what Salk was to Polio! Personally, Dr. Judah Folkman is my hero! A real hero, deserving of the Nobel Prize....and I don't speak lightly. I am a cancer patient ...

On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen168 reviews
Harold McGee

Scribner, 2004

top stuff
I think it's important to point out this book is realively small for the degree of degtail it contains. If you want to find out the answers to a great deal of cullinary questions without wading through highly verbose food science texts, then this is your book. It is certainly Europe centric.

The Humanure Handbook: A Guide to Composting Human Manure64 reviews
Joseph C. Jenkins

Jenkins Publishing (PA), 1996

Great for the environment
Due to a plumbing fault in the house, my family have been composting in the back garden on a daily basis for over a year. What a bonus to stumble upon this book and find out that our actions have been helping to preserve the future of our planet! A number of residents in our street have complainined that the local environment has been suffering from some kind of unpleasant air pollution of late, ...

Approaches to Physical Measurements in Biotechnology13 reviews
B. C. Blake-coleman

Academic Press, 1993

Too Good to Leave Out of Print!
Surely the publishers are going to reprint this book or get out another edition. It is, after all, a quite unique book and still absolutely current in its content and objectives.

Oxygen: The Molecule that Made the World16 reviews
Nick Lane

Oxford University Press, USA, 2003

Another great book by Lane
Although not quite as pulled together as "Power, Sex, Suicide", this is a wonderful account of modern biochemistry. There are fresh ideas on nearly every page and his writing is amazingly clear. I realized halfway through that there are very few diagrams in the text, yet I felt like I didn't need any; a rarity for any science book. It may be a little tough going if you haven't had some ...

Polaroid Transfers: A Complete Visual Guide to Creating Image and Emulsion Transfers15 reviews
Kathleen Carr

Amphoto Books, 1997

The only book on this you will ever need!
I've been wanting both of her books for awhile now and I finally splurged and got both of them (the Polaroid Manipulations book that concentrates on the SX-70 manip process). When I first flipped through this book I was blown away and amazed by the content. This book is the number one resource for helping you along with your Polaroid transfers and emulsion lifts. It is HIGHLY informative. The ...

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Chemistry15 reviews
Linus Pauling, E. Bright Wilson

Dover Publications, 1985

Outstanding and a classic, however not for beginners, don't let "introduction" fool you! :)
As an alum holding both undergrad and graduate degrees in a related field, I figured I would pick this title up for some pretty heavy reading. I was right. Even thought the title says "an introduction", there are several pre-requisites to understanding Quantum Mechanics, and the style of Linus Pauling's writing in general. The book reads very much like a textbook, and I would suggest at least ...

Design for Six Sigma13 reviews
Kai Yang, Basem S. EI-Haik

McGraw-Hill Professional, 2008

Worth the buy!
I have not found such a comprehensive book for design of six sigma. I started using this book for advanced experimental design and taguchi methods, but ended understanding the complete roadmap for design of six sigma. The systems approach allows an enthusiast reader to start anywhere, without having to spend time refering back to earlier chapters. The relatively newer trends as TRIZ and axiomatic ...

Handbook for Critical Cleaning13 reviews

CRC, 2000

It's the ONLY book on Critical Cleaning
In my opinion, it's not just the BEST book on critical cleaning, it's the ONLY objective, scientific book on critical cleaning, emphasizing studies, testing and data. Also includes anecdotal information with proper discussion and evaluation, putting one of its feet in the "Handbook" category. In the spacecraft technologies area, Tribble's book "Fundamental's of Contamination Control," is ...

Organic Chemistry16 reviews
Robert Neilson Boyd

Allyn & Bacon, 2003

The standard against which all other text books should be measured!
O.K. Let's face it: what could be more boring than Organic Chemistry - right? WRONG! Morrison and Boyd's Organic Chemistry takes the pallid and dry subject of Organic Chemistry and imbues it with a vitality and interest that will stupefy you. Trust me, you cannot begin to fathom how effective this book is at making its subject interesting and more importantly understandable. The authors are ...

Illegal Drugs: A Complete Guide to Their History, Chemistry, Use and Abuse (The Sagebrush Medical Guides)15 reviews
Paul M. Gahlinger

Sagebrush Press (UT), 2001

excellent book
This is an excellent, informative book. The reviewer who said this book lacks cites is correct. Otherwise, it is money well spent.

Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis14 reviews
Laszlo Kurti, Barbara Czako

Just Buy It.
To put it shortly, if you're an organic chemistry graduate student the just go ahead and buy this book. It will be the most used book in your personal library. Also, if you are an undergraduate working in a research lab buy it as well. You'll have a huge jump on the other graduate students when you go to grad school having been familiar with this book.
