A GREAT READ!
This is a very well written saga that has kept my 12 year old son completely captivated! Although I got this book for my son to read, I have read it as well and enjoyed it immensely. We have since read the next two in the series, SPIRIT WALKER and SOUL EATER, and are equally impressed. I would definitely recommend this book series!

Peril and Peace: Chronicles of the Ancient Church (History Lives series)3 reviews
Mindy Withrow, Brandon Withrow

CF4K, 2006

Great overview for adults and children
I found volume one in the History Lives series to be very readable and have given several copies as gifts to friends with children. It is a great overview of early church history for adults and children. I was particularly challenged by the reminder of the sacrifice the early church made. And while there was no shirking from the martyrdom of so many earlier believers, it was recounted in such ...

Chronicle of the Roman Republic: The Rulers of Ancient Rome From Romulus to Augustus14 reviews
Philip Matyszak

Thames & Hudson, 2003

Great Introduction to the Roman Republic
The history of the Roman republic--a story about how one city in Italy overthrew a monarchy, conquered her neighbors, united Italy, defeated all her rivals in the Mediterranean, and descended into civil war and ultimately monarchy again--presents a formidable challenge to any beginner. The republic itself was a political entity so complex it bewildered foreigners and Romans alike. Its ...

The Gale of the World (Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight, Vol 15)2 reviews
Henry Williamson

Alan Sutton Publishing, Ltd., 1999

A Wonderful Journey--A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight
This series of books (15 in all that make up A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight) is a wonderful journey of discovery, history and vivid storytelling. Williamson's novel is brilliant. Each volume stands on its own, but is best read from the beginning (Volume 1 - The Dark Lantern) to truly experience the cycle of Phillip Maddison's (and one's own in some way) life. Volume 15, The Gale of the World, ...

A mammoth of British and European social history
Few can claim to have read "A Chronicle of Ancient Sunlight," a mighty, mighty work that Henry Williamson wrote during 1951-1969, comprising the following books: (1) The Dark Lantern (2) Donkey Boy (3) Young Philip Maddison (4) How Dear is Life (5) A Fox Under My Cloak (6) The Golden Virgin (7) Love and the Loveless (8) A Test to Destruction (9) The Innocent Moon (10) It Was the Nightingale ...

1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther (Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture)

IVP Academic, 2008

The church fathers, as they did in earlier books dealing with Israel's history from the time of Joshua to the united monarchy, found ample material for typological and moral interpretation in 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther. As will be immediately clear to readers of this volume, they gave much more attention to 1-2 Kings than to any of the other books addressed here; whether this was due to a certain repetitiveness in the ...

Chronicle of the Old Testament Kings: The Reign-By-Reign Record of the Rulers of Ancient Israel (Chronicle)6 reviews
John W. Rogerson

Thames & Hudson, 1999

Typically fine book in the T & H Chronicles group
This book is for those with open minds that are interested in the material of the ancient kings of Israel. It is not intended to be a religious or Biblical text so those who purchase it believing it is just that are going to be disappointed, offended, etc. Considering the low ratings shown here that are based on that, the potential buyer should be aware of this and that the use of the term ...

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle7 reviews
Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. English

Routledge, 1998

Ian Myles Slater on: A Great Replacement
"The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle" is the collective name for a whole set of chronicles, originally scattered across England. Arranged mainly year-by-year, they contain contemporary, or purportedly contemporary, accounts of important events: wars, the deaths of kings, bishops, and popes, and some interesting poems about such events. They are clearly derived from a single original form, but show ...
