An insightful look into heaven and hell
In this book C.S. Lewis sets out to present a picture of the nature of heaven and hell through the device of an allegorical journey - by bus! - from hell to a place called the valley of the shadow of heaven. This book reads more like an expose than a traditionally plotted novel. Nevertheless, it's one of the most memorable books I've read. Among the most memorable notions of this book: the dense ...

The Enduring Master of the Macabre
Edgar Allan Poe, born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809, died October 7, 1849. What is it that makes an author famous? I don't mean famous in the sense a news article reports that "Jack Greylea's novels sold 15 million copies last year," but in the sense that he is thought of as being profound, and seminal. That he is quoted, and scholars analyse his works, and he is looked upon as ...

A culinary view all should read
Good old Anthony, he is straight and to the point, but after being around restaurants for 35yrs, I wouldn't want it any other way. Few people have a real clue to what goes on in food service. Now is the time to read, find out, and pay respect.

Essential reading
As a dentist I've had the opportunity to treat several patients with chronic idiopathic oral-facial pain. While I can access the best scientific medical literature in the world on the topic I am consistently reminded of the spiritual aspects of pain by my patients. In this excellent treatment of the topic by the Oxford professor and prolific writer C.S. Lewis, we are challenged to see a loving ...

Great poet, great work, amazing compilation!
A great compilation of Yeats works, while other compilations have excellent notes and essays regarding his works this one has many of his poems (and series of poems) all in one book. An outstanding book to own, beautifully compiled in this soft cover book (which has surprisingly held up quite well against years of battering as I carry it with me from time to time).

Profound and moving
Lewis, a confirmed intellectual bachelor, almost comically stumbled into a deeply romantic and erotic marriage late in life. An American poet, Joy Davidman, while visiting him in England was stricken with breast cancer. Her visa expired and she faced a mindlessly bureaucratic forced expulsion which probably would have killed her. Lewis agreed to what he expected to be a marriage of ...

Sobering readings
After reading Borges Collected Fictins I have found it difficult to take most other authors seriously. Borge's prose is fluent and easily read. The stories are short, sometimes even short-short, which makes them suitable for reading before going to sleep. The stories have a basic structure with a beginning, middle, and end. So much for the easy part! There is the superficial text, of course, ...

"The Needed Antidote"
This is a marvelous book for showing the rank and file American college freshman just how he or she may have been unwittingly propagandized in the lower grades. The reigning studenty "philosophy" these days is indistinguishable from classical sophistry's arguments that "everything is relative" and -since everyone has a right to his opinion - that all opinions are necessarily of equal value. I ...

Great Reading
There is a jacket blurb on The Weight of Glory from John Updike, who comments on both the comfort and pleasure afforded by Lewis. Neither should be underestimated. This is great devotional writing but it is also great writing, writing that is typified by Lewis' ability to deal with the weightiest of matters with a light touch. It is a truism that our faith is reinforced whenever we see it ...

Definitive Indeed!
This new edition of the RTS is worth buying even if you already own an earlier edition. The editor has included important material on how this book was developed and interpreted. As for the book itself, the Road to Serfdom explains focuses on the rise of totalitarianism in twentieth century Europe. Yet it also made a more general argument concerning the incompatibility of democracy and ...

An Essential Work by Jung.
This work, along with _Modern Man in Search of a Soul_, is one of the best places to start if you are new to reading Jung. It is also the companion piece and predecessor to _Aion_, which is another spectacular and groundbreaking work. If you want to read _Aion_, it would make sense for you to read this one first, since it is part 1 of volume nine, while _Aion_ is part two. Overall, I would say ...

Stories by a Master
This collection of twenty six stories by Nobel Laureate Garcia Marquez was first published as a whole in 1984, although the stories were previously published in three separate volumes. As a consequence, two translators are credited here: Gregory Rabassa for the stories from EYES OF A BLUE DOG and THE INCREDIBLE AND SAD TALE OF INNOCENT ERENDIRA AND HER HEARTLESS GRANDMOTHER, and J. S. Bernstein ...

Just Read It All
The complaints about the poor organization of the collection can be overcome by simply reading it from front to back. Surely it is that good. My foray into the works of Flannery O'Connor, a southern, gothic author of darkly humorous novels and short stories came via a recommendation in Harold Bloom's, "What to Read and Why." As it turned ot, I had read one of her short stories, "A Good Man ...

The deal of a lifetime!
While it seems that many of C.S. Lewis' works have been compiled into collections since their initial publications, this particular collection might be one of the best available at the moment. That is, this collection might offer a comparatively larger bang for one's buck. Each of the titles contained within this single volume are more than worth their weight in gold, making the collection as a ...

When she was God
Many people say Raymond Carver is a minimalist. He didn't like this label, and I agree with him. I don't know if Amy Hempel is keen on being labeled - I suspect not so - but, for that matter she is a minimalist writer. Just look at one of her stories, called "Memoir". She needs about 20 words to write a whole text, and in this short truncated paragraph she compresses a whole life. Wow! "The ...

I laughed, I cried, I got angry
I feel a sports columnist's job is to evoke emotion in the reader. Make him/her laugh, cry, get angry, just don't bore them. Riley does that better than anyone. He's an amazingly gifted writer and I loved nearly every bit of this book. I'd already read most of these columns being a subscriber to Sports Illustrated, but they were definitely worth a re-read. He's great at tugging the ...

Sheer Genius (and a good translation)
This is the kind of writing that makes me questions why movies even exist. The style, the sentences, the humor, the feel is all something unique, unpredictable, and unmistakable. These plots are bizarre, intriguing and it is nearly impossible to guess the endings. All this coming from a translated work is a success for the writer and the translators.
