Complete Photoshop CS2 For Digital Photographers (Graphics Series) 17 reviews Colin Smith
Charles River Media, 2005
Photoshop CS2 I was really surprised this was such an excellent book. Usually I just read the chapters I am interested in , but I read this whole book--it was just so instructional and one that I will keep close to the computer for reference book.

Filming the Fantastic: A Guide to Visual Effects Cinematography 9 reviews Mark Sawicki
Focal Press, 2007
Original Insights from Traditional Methods Mark's book is so much more than another cg text on doing effects. He has endeavored to share many traditional methods which are at the source of how a very experienced professional translates them into cg. But the beauty of Mark's book is that he doesn't just mention some vague concept. He gets in there with very specific details and examples of traditional work, as well as cg work. There is so ...

Photoshop Masking & Compositing (VOICES) 75 reviews Katrin Eismann
New Riders Press, 2004
Katrin Eismann is a Masking/Composite Diva Ms. Eismann hits all the areas necessary for one to become proficient in masking and compositing. She is recommended by all the current photoshop gurus for a very good reason. This book is an excellent primer and also delves into advanced techniques. It's a great resource book and I've got post-it flags everywhere. You can't go wrong with this book.

Combining Images with Photoshop Elements: Selecting, Layering, Masking, and Compositing 9 reviews Ted LoCascio
Sybex, 2006
educator admires a text book about a difficult concept As a retired pricipal, I love Ted LoCascio's book. It seems to me, that he studied how to write a textbook for beginners, which I mostly am, and experienced amateurs, which I somewhat am. i was floundering about how to use brushes well and how to layer well. The other books are not written in a logical, easily understood way that newbies can understand and practice. This book is the ...

Adobe After Effects CS3 Professional Studio Techniques 15 reviews Mark Christiansen
Adobe Press, 2007
Straightforward, 'real world' applicable techniques. With one of the most refreshingly honest forewords I've found in a techinical book yet, Mark Christiansen & Stu Maschwitz have created an After Effects manual which, unlike so many others, DOESN'T focus on motion graphics, but reveals the studio techniques required to use After Effects as a fully fledged, fully capable compositing suite. It is obvious from the getgo that these authors are ...

Compositing Visual Effects: Essentials for the Aspiring Artist 4 reviews Steve Wright
Focal Press, 2007
fantastic introductory book I first bought the other book from Steve Wright and I found it quite difficult. This book, 'Essentials' is just as it says. very clearly written with lot's of pictures. It covers every compositing aspect so it's very valuable.

The Essential Blender: Guide to 3D Creation with the Open Source Suite Blender 28 reviews Roland Hess
No Starch Press, 2007
Clarifying Some Things I have not actually read through the book entirely yet, so I'm not going to address the content at all. What I did want to clarify is that there seem to be a lot of comments about poor picture quality. Okay - they're not stellar full-color prints with 3D popouts. But they're hardly as bad as I've seen them repeatedly described. I was a bit nervous about ordering this book, but the pictures easily ...

The Art and Science of Digital Compositing, Second Edition: Techniques for Visual Effects, Animation and ... 1 review Ron Brinkmann
Morgan Kaufmann, 2008
Amazing - no other text compares I started my career in visual effects around the same time the first edition was published and have referenced it constantly through out the 9+ years. I bought the 2nd edition for two reasons, my copy of the first edition was falling apart and nostalgia. I was not expecting much new information and was mostly just looking for an intact copy of the first edition with a few new tidbits here and ...

Digital Compositing for Film and Video with CDROM (Focal Press Visual Effects and Animation) 5 reviews Steve Wright
Focal Press, 2001
One of the best compositing books out there... If you consider yourself an upper intermediate level user or less, I'd recommend this book. Among many other things that it does quite well, it explains what procedural keyers like Primatte are doing and shows you how to accomplish the same kinds of processes manually. You will know what each of the many keyers in After Effects (and other compositing apps) are doing and the logic behind each. You ...

Bluescreen Compositing (DV Expert Series) (DV Expert Series) (Dv Expert Series) 1 review John Jackman
CMP Books, 2007
very understandable Jackman takes us thru the steps in doing professional bluescreen usage for movies. Easy explanations, with accompanying descriptions of the typical equipment needed. It does not seem hard at all.
Numerous tips are given, about how to arrange lighting, what the people being filmed should wear, etc. In general, given a choice of furniture and ambient lighting, the colours of clothing need to be ...

Adobe InDesign CS2 One-on-One (One-On-One) 10 reviews Deke McClelland
O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2006
Beginner to Expert with one book We're using this book in my Page Layout class at College and it's one of the best "text books" I've ever used. Deke provides lots of extras on the CD to help visualize the steps and end results quickly. He also gives many details as you work through the lessons to get you to an expert level as quickly as possible. I'll look for the One-on-One books for future software training and especially ...

Shake 4.1 Essential Training 2 reviews Steve Wright
lynda.com, Inc, 2007
Talks too fast but knows everything Wright's DVD is invaluable, but even with a 24" monitor, it's nearly impossible to follow his examples while Shake is open and I can play monkey see monkey do. It works best if I play his tutorial on my laptop and do the Shake on the desktop. Neither Wright's dvd nor Shake plays well with other programs on the screen at the same time.

Inspired 3D Lighting & Compositing (Inspired 3D) 7 reviews David Parrish
Course Technology PTR, 2002
An excellent book for us newbies. I've now read through a small pile of CG books and I found that my self-studies would not have been complete without Parrish's excellent book. I wish I discovered it earlier when I first started struggling with 3D modeling and rendering software. I would recommend this as the first book a beginner in computer graphics should read; but also worth reading if you are a bit farther down the road.

Adobe Master Class: Photoshop Compositing with John Lund (Adobe Master Class) 5 reviews John Lund, Pamela Pfiffner
Adobe Press, 2003
Great book! Must have for any level Photoshop user. John Lund invites you into his studio, gives you a cup of coffee and lets you look over his shoulder while he works, all the while explaining what he's doing in a way that makes it easy to understand. And what he does is amazing! This book is inspirational, not very heady (as in 'you could never in your wildest dreams ever do this') and practical (as in 'you can do this') with easy-to-follow, ...

The Art and Science of Digital Compositing (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics) 25 reviews Ron Brinkmann
Morgan Kaufmann, 1999
A must Even if I'm not working in vfx, so I haven't a great experience, I think this book should be in every comps shelf: very simple, well written, it deals with the math under every (even the simplest) operation you can do in your compositing package (it's quite software-indipendent). It explains several wonderful tricks too.
Globally, very useful in my opinion.

Digital Retouching and Compositing: Photographers' Guide (Power!) 2 reviews David D. Busch
Course Technology PTR, 2003
Best Retouching Book on the Market! This is simply the best book on digital retouching that I've seen! Some of the other books look slick, but when you get down to it, all they provide are a series of quick tips on how to fix particular problems. This book has those tips, too, but the author goes much deeper into explaining why these techniques are necessary, and exactly how they work. Instead of handing me a fish, Busch has ...
