A Place to Stand25 reviews
Jimmy Santiago Baca

Grove Press, 2002

Can't shake it
I'm giving this book five stars, not because it is a literary masterpiece, but because it is a compelling memoir that I can't forget. I felt a gamut of emotions while reading this book, but for the most part I ached for Mr. Baca and the pain and anguish he suffered. I thank him for writing about his life so eloquently.

Contagion and Confinement: Controlling Tuberculosis along the Skid Road
Barron H. Lerner

The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1998

Most historians of tuberculosis have focused on the sanatorium era of the early twentieth century, losing interest in the disease with the discovery of curative antibiotics in the 1940s. In Contagion and Confinement, Barron H. Lerner offers the first in-depth look at the history of tuberculosis control in the antibiotic era, providing a vital account of this neglected chapter in the history of the disease. He argues that the new antibiotic ...

The Great Wall of Confinement: The Chinese Prison Camp through Contemporary Fiction and Reportage7 reviews
Philip F. Williams, Yenna Wu

University of California Press, 2004

Shockingly educative
The language and content of the book makes for an educational yet engrossing read. The absurd and revealing facts concerning the Chinese prison labor camps are presented in a highly organized and easily understood, despite the complexity of the subject matter. Highly recommended to all readers.

White Slaves of Maquinna: John R. Jewitt's Narrative of Capture and Confinement at Nootka1 review
John Jewitt

Heritage House Publishing, 2000

Define Contentment
Taken as a historical account of Hewitt's confinement with the Nootka, the book is rich in anthropological data. Under obvious duress Hewitt nonetheless maintains a British calm to his plight and his detailed descriptions shed light on an enigmatic people. But what I found more interesting was Hewitt's personal transformation as a result of his separation from the civilized(?) world. I doubt ...

Total Confinement: Madness and Reason in the Maximum Security Prison (California Series in Public ...2 reviews
Lorna A. Rhodes

University of California Press, 2004

Highly recommended
This is a meticulously researched and theoretically sophisticated expose of a deeply hidden yet increasingly important facet of American culture. As the United States more and more becomes a prison nation, books like this will become essential reading not only for scholars but for average citizens.

The Physics of Inertial Fusion: Beam Plasma Interaction, Hydrodynamics, Hot Dense Matter ( Series of ...
Stefano Atzeni, Jurgen Meyer-ter-Vehn

Oxford University Press, USA, 2004

This book is on inertial confinement fusion, an alternative way to produce electrical power from hydrogen fuel by using powerful lasers or particle beams. Two huge laser facilities are presently under construction to show that this method works. It involves the compression of tiny amounts (micrograms) of fuel to thousand times solid density and pressures otherwise existing only in the centre of stars. Thanks to advances in laser technology, it ...

States of Confinement: Policing, Detention, and Prisons2 reviews

Palgrave Macmillan, 2002

An outstanding collection!
Joy James has collected a great group of essays from engaged academics and thoughtful activists dealing with a wide range of issues related to the prison-industrial complex. The best way to convey the content is probably to list some of the essays: * Robbie Meeropol, "Testimony" (of a Rosenberg son) * Dan Williams, lawyer for Mumia, on the case * Manning Marable, "Black Radicalism & an ...

Seventeen contributors from six different countries with backgrounds in history, sociology and criminology utilize various methodological ...

Equality by Default: An Essay on Modernity As Confinement (Crosscurrents)2 reviews
Philippe Beneton

ISI Books, 2004

A splendid account of late modernity
As the subtitle of the book states, "an essay on modernity as confinement," this book focuses primarily on modernity. By "equality by default", the author examines egalitarianism in a modern sense, in which the Self is elevated to a divine level, authority has been eroded, science is the only accepted form of reason, and procedure has subjugated form. I would recommend this book particularly ...

The Theory of Toroidally Confined Plasmas
Roscoe B. White

World Scientific Publishing Company, 2006

This invaluable book provides a basic introduction to plasma equilibrium, particle orbits, transport, and those ideal and resistive magnetohydrodynamic instabilities which dominate the behavior of toroidal magnetically confined plasmas, and to develop the mathematical methods necessary for their theoretical analysis. The book deals primarily with the consequences of ideal and resistive magnetohydrodynamics, these theories being responsible for ...
