The Politically Incorrect Guide(tm) to the Constitution (Politically Incorrect Guides)36 reviews
Kevin R. C. Gutzman

Regnery Publishing, Inc., 2007

Absolutely Fascinating
I had just read The Revolution by Ron Paul when I saw this book. Interested in learning more about the Constitution I thought it looked promising. I had no idea what a treat I was in for. I couldn't put it down. Kevin Gutzman masterfully lays out how the constitution has been used and abused to achieve political ends that were not intended to be achieved. And the abuses started happening ...

Shh! We're Writing the Constitution8 reviews
Jean Fritz

Putnam Juvenile, 1997

The story of the Constitution Convention for young readers
The point of Jean Fritz's "Shh! We're Writing the Constitution" is that contrary to popular opinion, America had to be dragged kicking and screaming into becoming a new nation. While it is true that Americans were happy to be independent of Great Britain, the colonies that were now states had become used to being sovereign and many of them wanted to keep it that way. Illustrated by Tomie de ...

Who Killed the Constitution?: The Fate of American Liberty from World War I to George W. Bush11 reviews
Thomas E. Woods Jr., Kevin R. C. Gutzman

Crown Forum, 2008

A Possible Post Mortum of the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights
Messers Woods and Gutzman wrote a provocative book that should be read by Americans who actually care about law-and-order plus individual liberties. This reviewer has noticed that the number of Americans who do care is quite small. The book deals "The Dirty Dozen" cases and instances of abuse of government power, and the authors readily admit that this book could have been exponentially larger. ...

How Democratic is the American Constitution? Second Edition28 reviews
Robert A. Dahl

Yale University Press, 2003

brief
first, this book is quite brief. less than 200 pages, large font and margins. i can see why he is recognized as a distinguished professor at yale. he is brilliant and engaging. he covered all of the essential topics and this book is a sound, middle-of-the-road text. there were just a few statements he made that i re-re-read, asking myself, "did he really say THAT?" i wish that he had ...

The Heritage Guide to the Constitution31 reviews
Edwin Meese, Matthew Spalding, ...

Regnery Publishing, Inc., 2005

Balanced, scholarly, excellent
Edwin Meese was head of the editorial board for this guide, which is put out by the Heritage Foundation. That might suggest to some people that there's a conservative slant to the guide, but those people would be wrong. The Heritage Guide was first brought to my attention by a very liberal aquaintance who praised it to the skies, and then by a very conservative colleague who likewise praised it ...

America's Constitution: A Biography30 reviews
Akhil Reed Amar

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2006

Many interesting insights
Although there are some tedious places, the book has a number of very valuable and interesting insights - especially the topics of the Second Amendment, the Eleventh Amendment, and the "privileges and immunities" clause stood out for me. He does a good job interweaving historical context and the text of the document. There are some unexpected emphases and omissions:for example, it emphasizes ...

The Constitution of the United States of America, with the Bill of Rights and all of the Amendments; The ...3 reviews
Thomas Jefferson, Second Continental Congress, ...

Wilder Publications, 2008

The Constitution
I bought this print of the U.S. Constitution at first because my pocket Constitution had almost fallen apart. When I got it in the mail I thought it was very pretty, but I was a little surprised at house large the print was. The print IS very large - so I guess it would be helpful for those who have bad vision, it isn't a BAD characteristic of the layout of the book, I was just surprised. It ...

The U.S. Constitution: And Fascinating Facts About It22 reviews
Terry L. Jordan

Oak Hill Publishing Company, 1999

What's a matter with you. Not having a knowledge of the US Constitution????
Get this. It's thorough. I read it many times over. It keeps things in perspective of where we should be as a nation. Sigh! Tom

Quarrels That Have Shaped the Constitution3 reviews
John A. Garraty

Harper Perennial, 1989

Journalistic and Therefore Useful
This series of essays will serve as an elementary introduction to rulings of the United States Supreme Court. The essays are more descriptive than analytic, so anyone interested in one of the few landmarks herein would do well to use this volume only as the start of research. Some essays are somewhat critical, but most are more about context than about correction. The landmark cases are ...

Criminal Procedure and the Constitution, 2007 ed. (American Casebook Series)
Jerold H. Israel, Yale Kamisar, ...

Thomson West, 2007

This coursebook is the work of nationally renowned experts on the subject of constitutional-criminal procedure. It is ideally suited for a survey course designed to explore and critically examine how the U.S. Supreme Court has dealt with a wide range of highly controversial issues that arise at various stages of the criminal process. Considerable pains have been taken to set forth the views of all members of the Court in such landmark cases as ...

The United States Constitution: What It Says, What It Means: A Hip Pocket Guide9 reviews
JusticeLearning.org

Oxford University Press, 2005

my constant companion
I had heard that Senator Byrd of W. Virginia kept a copy of the US Constitution in his pocket. I was not sure where to get one also. I found it here at Amazon, and for a good price as well. I use to show what is actually written, if someone is in doubt. And it gives a nice, brief explanation of the meanings behind the words. I am getting a copy for all of my grown children. A very good edition.

U.S. Constitution and You, The2 reviews
Syl Sobel

Barron's Educational Series, 2001

one of two
I purchased this book in addition to How The U.S. Government Works, by the same author. I was pleased that the books do not talk down to my middle-schoolers, but instead explain in easily-understood terms how it all is supposed to work. This is a good reference book for a 'tween-ager. I keep both books on my homeschool bookshelf and my children have gone back to them several times.

Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution10 reviews
Woody Holton

Hill and Wang, 2008

A Fine Revisionist Perspective on the Adoption of the Constitution, Especially Helpful in Coming to Grips with Personal Liberty
The nature of the Constitution, as well as the intention of its framers, has long been debated by historians. "Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution" offers an interesting and instructive new perspective on this debate by suggesting that what emerged from the Constitutional convention and its ratification was especially democratic not so much because of the majority of the efforts ...

Constitution Translated for Kids, Second Edition15 reviews
Cathy Travis

Ovation Books, 2008

Don't leave this book for just the grade school students to enjoy!!
Author Cathy Travis prefaces her large-format hardcover with a message to parents and teachers about her reasons for writing this book--to demonstrate how the Constitution affects modern political events. The preface to kids encourages young readers to help show adults what the Constitution actually says. As a twenty-something with a dual degree in engineering and economics, I consider myself ...

Our Undemocratic Constitution: Where the Constitution Goes Wrong (And How We the People Can Correct It)15 reviews
Sanford Levinson

Oxford University Press, USA, 2008

Solid Five for Good Sense, Elegance, and Timing
This is one of those critical books where even a top reviewer is well advised to carfefully consider all extant reviews by others, and I have done so. They all have something important, less the fellow that cannot handle brilliance in others. Having considered all the other reviews, I continue in my own belief that this book is a solid FIVE for good sense, elegance in presentation, and ...

The Lost Constitution37 reviews
William Martin

Forge Books, 2007

Simply the Best.
William Martin is the Emperor of History and Mystery, and he never disappoints. This volume allows the reader to breathe eighteenth century air, and become an accomplice to skullduggery, past and present. Do not tell me that North Pike and Mary Cousins never lived because, thanks to William Martin, I know them. If you cannot afford a vacation, travel through time and place in THE LOST ...
