A stunning work
No number of stars is enough for this book. The scholarship is amazing, the narrative clear and fascinating from start to finish, the topic more relevant than ever. This book and its predecessor (Radical Enlightenment) are two of the best books I have read in many years, and by far the best on this subject. I am very seldom so enthusiastic about any product. So many books come with the lure of an ...

West shows us a world of surprising and fascinating complexity, a place of high drama undergoing sweeping transformations. West is a master storyteller. ...
The Contested Legacy of Ayn Rand: Truth and Toleration in Objectivism

David Kelley

Ayn Rand for the rational - and tolerant!
A number of the reviewers here of Kelley's book are water-carriers for the ARI and their curious claim that NOBODY (except them, of course!) can speak for Objectivism and the legacy of Ayn Rand. Echoing Leonard Peikoff, they claim that Objectivism is a "closed system" that is perfect, complete, above criticism, and comprises ONLY the writings of Ayn Rand or those she endorsed (although ARI tries ...

Outstanding Book - Highly Recommended
The history of the plaza, laid out under the Spanish crown in 1781, is the history of Los Angeles. This book is much better than Schneider's.
I have always loved the Adirondacks, but after reading this astonishingly well-written book I have a new appreciation for this remarkable region. If you're a fellow Adirondacks-lover I HIGHLY recommend this book. Also, if you have time to read only one history of the Adirondacks, then this is the one to read.
Toxic Exposures: Contested Illnesses and the Environmental Health Movement

Margaret Jane Radin

, 2001
An outstanding treatment of a most important subject
Radin deals thoughtfully with some virgin territory in legal and social theory -- the question of what theoretical grounds might underlie the common intuition that some valued (indeed cherished) things should be treated by the law as (in whole or in part) "not for sale." Such items as children, body parts, sexual relations, votes, opinions, and the like are among the candidates for this status, ...

They felt the war on the mountain tops too
When most of us close our eyes and try to picture the Civil War as it happened, I imagine most of us see long rows of uniformed men advancing toward one another with appropriate flags waving above them, in an open field lit with sunshine. We seem to picture the war as one great Pickett's Charge. All the men are true and brave, ready to die doing their duty. Of course, that's not the way it ...

A good overview of social thoery with a theme
In this book, Seidman displays the arc of sociological theory, starting with Comte and the Founding Fathers of sociology (Marx, Durkheim, & Weber). He then moves through to more contemporary theory, including post-structuralism (post-modernism). The purpose beghind this book is to look for the moral beliefs that are inevitably imbedded in any abstract theory of sociology. It is only one book, ...
