Strunk and White and Walsh
At last, a worthy successor to Strunk and White! No, I have not abandoned my loyalty to those old masters whose THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE retains its utility and authority after 40 years (however badly I may apply their lessons in practice), but we were sorely in need of an update. Language is alive and usage shifts. The basics may endure for years or decades, perhaps very occasionally for ...

Good resource for editing prodegies
It was an easy read and very helpful in understanding what a copy editor has to go through on a daily basis. It may not be the most glamorous job, but we gotta start somewhere. This book will help you understand the AP style better and a good reference when you're stuck on how to write something.

Lots of good advice but...
...a bit too British. Some of the information seems specifically applicable to Cambridge University Press, and will need to be supplemented by guides to U.S. practice.

I envy the two authors
This combination textbook/workbook is one of those projects that makes me wish I had done it. Or that one as good as this was available when I was teaching. It is broken down into three areas: copy reading, headline writing and publication layout. This is for any kind of publication, but the major focus is on newspapers. A major factor in the book's appeal is the writing style: It makes copy ...

Copy editors may/might quibble but writers will love it
First: I bow to the professional opinions of earlier reviewers, copy-editors all, I suspect. They found fault (of course; it's what their profession does) with Dr. Ellis' book. I didn't. As a magazine journalist who has frequently struggled to tell a story well, I found her book useful, intelligent, and surprisingly entertaining. Her advice on how to pick a "hot quote" or how to end a hard news ...

The definitive work on the topic
My wife who has edited or translated over 250 books consults this book regularly. She tells me that people who know, use this book as their "Bible" along with the Chicago Manual of style. (For what it's worth, she prefers the Collins dictionary -- don't ask me which version! -- out of about 100 dictionaries she has.)This book is fairly pricey, some would say -- but it's worth every cent.
