All You Need To Know About the Music Business: 6th Edition77 reviews
Donald S. Passman

Free Press, 2006

All you need to know about the music business: 6th edition
Awesome. Easy to read. Clearly and methodically organized. Extremely helpful at any level of the music profession but especially near the beginning of your career because the book explains how to run your own music business independently from large producers, if you are up to the challenge. It is the best source of a variety of resources: Who's who, legalities and future choices that must be made.

Content: Selected Essays on Technology, Creativity, Copyright, and the Future of the Future3 reviews
Cory Doctorow

Tachyon Publications, 2008

Cory's book is a great resource on DRM and copyright problems.
I've read or seen most of the material in this book online and am a big fan of Cory's work. I thought this would be a great resource to have instead of a bunch of print outs or bookmarks. Cory Doctorow has some of the best thought out arguments against DRM and for digital freedoms, pointing out tons of interesting historical examples along the way. Great read!

The Plain & Simple Guide to Music Publishing: Foreword by Tom Petty (Book)12 reviews
Randal Wixen

Hal Leonard, 2008

Naked No More
I purchased Randall Wixen's "Guide" on a whim, having never made a cent off of my home-brewed ditties and not sure I ever would. Now, nine months after moving to Los Angeles, I'm approaching a meeting with a major 'performing rights organization,' and I couldn't be armed with a better tool. In his "Plain and Simple Guide to Music Publishing," Wixen sets forth in lay terms the basic in's and ...

Patents and How to Get One: A Practical Handbook9 reviews
U.S. Department of Commerce

Dover Publications, 2000

A convenient concise OVERVIEW
This is quick 85-page overview of the patent process. It provides the key steps, requirements, and definitions in very plain terms (almost in the same style of language as the IRS's 1040EZ instructions). However, it steers clear from giving ADVICE. If you need advice, try Patent It Yourself, from Nolo Press. Some of the information in this slim volume can be found at http://www.uspto.gov/. ...

Remix: Making Art and Commerce Thrive in the Hybrid Economy1 review
Lawrence Lessig

Penguin Press HC, The, 2008

Copyright wars, who win?
Intellectual property right, art, internet, e-commerce, economy driven model, plus legal issues, make this book a very busy read. As the author points out, there can be only one winner - Hollywood or Internet. Everyone knows that Internet always wins. He is correct to point out the difference between commercial economies and sharing economics. But everyone knows this too. There is nothing ...

Thomas A. Crowell

Focal Press, 2007

A must have for anyone in the entertainment industry
This book helps anyone who wants to do or is doing anything in entertainment be on top of their game. I carry this book with me, along with my bible (that says a lot about the book right there!) I read it every chance I get and learn so much more as a Writer/Producer, about the legalities and expectations of each member of a production team. This book is necessary for a business minded person. ...

Introduction to Patent Law (Introduction to Law Series)13 reviews
Janice M. Mueller

Aspen Publishers, 2006

Great prep for the patent bar!
This book is great for preparing for the patent bar. As a scientist (physics background) wanting to take the patent bar, I found this book clear, logical, and easy to read. I was hesitant on buying it for studying for the patent bar after reading some of the reviews. However, I passed the patent bar on my first attempt using only this book and the bullseye prep review notes.

Patent, Copyright & Trademark: An Intellectual Property Desk Reference12 reviews
Rich Stim

NOLO, 2007

Legal Information without the Legalese
This book is easy-to-use and highly detailed with an appealing, bulleted layout and many illustrations that helped to answer most of my basic questions about the four categories of intellectual property (copyright, patents, trademarks and trade secrets). I took a graduate-level library science course on the legal aspects of information and borrowed several books on IP from the library. This ...

Licensing Art 101, Third Edition: Publishing and Licensing Your Artwork for Profit (Licensing Art 101)6 reviews
Michael Woodward

This basic introduction is thoroughly 'user friendly'
Now in a newly updated and expanded third edition, "Licensing Art 101: Publishing And Licensing Your Artwork For Profit" takes up where most art classes leave off -- how to make a living as an artist. Drawing upon his more than 31 years of experience and expertise in the licensing industry, Michael Woodward clearly covers such fundamental issues for aspiring artists as how to negotiate fees for ...

Essentials of Licensing Intellectual Property (Essentials (John Wiley))3 reviews
Alexander I. Poltorak, Paul J. Lerner

Wiley, 2003

good read (considering the subject)
This is a good guide for introducing someone to the subject. Like the title says, it's the essentials, giving the reader a foundation to come back to wherever the particulars of their situation might take them. It is a big plus that the book is surprisingly readable - Important given that the typical reader might have to read the book in order to develop an understanding of why they should have ...

Plants: 2,400 Copyright-Free Illustrations of Flowers, Trees, Fruits and Vegetables (Dover Pictorial Archive ...2 reviews

Dover Publications, 1998

Great Book!
This is a terrific book. I purchased it with the companion book on Animals. It is a "must have" for anyone interested in art, biology, or just a good coffee table book. It will keep youngsters quiet for hours with the facinating illustrations. Very high quality. You just can't beat the price either. I highly recommend it. You, too, can be botanically correct!

Against Intellectual Monopoly1 review
Michele Boldrin, David K. Levine

Cambridge University Press, 2008

Intriguing
First, I have not read the book in this form. I read a free version online. There might be some differences; I don't know. Anyway- I was pointed to this book while arguing that intellectual property is needed to overcome a public goods problem. After reading it, I've moved from confidently supporting minimal IP rights to tentatively advocating their abolition. The authors provide plenty of ...

Learning to write content for an effective website is crucial for any business or organization. Copyright: Examples And Explanations (Examples & Explanations)1 review
Stephen M. McJohn

Aspen Publishers, 2006

Good for a total novice
Knowing nothing about copyright law, this Examples & Explanations was useful in showing me the "bigger picture." The book is divided into four sections: copyrightable subject matter, ownership and transactions, statutory rights, and copyright litigation. It highlights major sources of conflict, like the exceptions to Section 106 rights, but gives only 20 pages to fair use. There is a little ...

Patents, Copyrights & Trademarks For Dummies (For Dummies (Business & Personal Finance))6 reviews
Henri J. A. Charmasson, John Buchaca

For Dummies, 2008

Patents, Copyrights & Trademarks for Dummies
I applied for a US Federal Trademark on July 13th and besides putting the (c) on my name and art work... I never thought much about sending in anything to the Copyright office in D.C. End of August a check company contacted me to license my artwork for their checks and address labels... this I knew was big but I needed extra help. A friend suggested this book, I ordered it immediately and wow... ...

Rembrandts in the Attic: Unlocking the Hidden Value of Patents10 reviews
Kevin G. Rivette, David Kline

Harvard Business School Press, 1999

Rembrandts and Understanding the New Economy
I would like to put Rembrandts into the context in which it was created. Rembrandts was conceived and co-authored by my friend and business partner of the past 15 years, Kevin Rivette. We co-founded Aurigin Systems,Inc., formerly SmartPatents, Inc., in 1992 to make it easier for people working with patents to do their work. From this beginning Aurigin and, particularly, Rembrandts, have helped ...

The Pirate's Dilemma: How Youth Culture Is Reinventing Capitalism20 reviews
Matt Mason

Free Press, 2008

Good for outsiders of the movement
This book is slightly maddening. The intention is valid: to steer people towards thinking about piracy in a new light. The "pirate's dilemma" is whether to persecute and shut down piracy, or to recognize it as a kind of creative competition. If you can't beat them, join them. The thrust of Mason's argument can be summarized by the two models of music industry approaches to P2P file sharing: ...
