A Masterful Tribute to America's Best Novelist
Jay Ellis's delightfully original and urbane treatment of the finest American novelist since Faulkner and Hemingway exemplifies the best tradition of crossover criticism. In a style that is edgy, electric, and intensely personal, Ellis probes into the complex worlds of McCarthy's fiction as if they were matters of life and death, which of course they are. Ellis's range of psychological, ...

A valuable source
A READER'S GUIDE TO BLOOD MERIDIAN is just what the title proclaims, providing a comprehensive glossary for all of the difficult terms, translations of the novel's many foreign words and phrases, and much of the lore behind the novel's historical characters and places. Shane Schimpf provides an overview first, which includes a Nietzsche-derived interpretation of the novel. While this ...

A really first-rate novel by a first-rate writer
Mary McCarthy has never gotten her due as a prose writer and this -- her best novel -- seems to have been overlooked. This is the story of a young man 's emancipation from his very much loved mother (with whom he has an almost romantic relationship based on her attractiveness and their shared sensibility). They construct an ideal life together in which they eschew all "modern" conveniences ...

A Cormac McCarthy vocabulary quiz
As I read Blood Meridian, I jotted down words that were either unusual or new to me or familiar yet not quite recognizable. This is the case with every McCarthy book one reads - astonishment at the writer's extensive vocabulary. I've deliberately left out most of the directly Spanish terms or Mexican off-shoots. So, anyway, here is one list of words you need to know in order to read Blood ...

I finally got my hands on a copy, and it's great!
After years of hearing about Notes On Blood Meridan by John Sepich, but not wanting to pay US$400 for a copy, I finally went down to my local branch of the public library and requested a copy through the inter-library loan department. In a few weeks a copy was delivered and now I have the copy right in front of me. (The inter-library loan fee was $10.00 but that's better than paying someone ...

Apocalyptic
This novel is landmark. McCarthy uses settings and actual events of the American west to cut away the superfluous flesh of modern fiction and reveal humanity's rawest. Also a fan of other great southern writers like Faulkner and Penn Warren, I found the prose of Blood Meridian tearfully beautiful and the content atrociously engaging. The portraits he paints of scene and deed are unrivaled; such ...

Thank God for Cormac McCarthy
I don't usually read plays, but I bought this one because, after finishing _Cities of the Plain_, I had read all of Cormac McCarthy's novels and was hungry for more. I was not disappointed. McCarthy's genius is no less evident in _The Stonemason_ than in any of his longer works; if anything, the shorter format of drama allows him to pack even more of his brilliant writing into every page. Many ...

the single most influential series i've read in my life
Cormac McCarthy has the amazing abilitly to envoke emotion using description of action and place. One never gets inside of his characters heads directly (at least not in this particular series) and yet it is the most emotionaly powerful series i have ever encountered. McCarthy taps into the very core of the human life force, our relationships with nature and change. I first read All the ...

Why can't I write like this?
I wish I had the ability to describe just how stunningly good this book is. The prose approaches perfection. I rarely ascribe true and unrelenting genius to writers, but I will make an exception for Mr. McCarthy. My favorite opening sentence of all time... "Dear friend now in the dusty clockless hours of the town when the streets lie black and steaming in the wake of the watertrucks and now ...

A breakthrough collection of essays, now expanded to 2 vol.
Every once in a while, I revisit McCarthy's world, then peruse this collection again, establishing a sort of kinship with the minds herein: Edwin Arnold's "The Mosaic of Cormac McCarthy's Fiction," Rick Wallach's take on Judge Holden, Richard Marius's recollections of Suttree's haunts as seen through the window of McCarthy's fiction. Once again I read Peter Josyph's "Blood Music: Reading Blood ...

One of the very best interpretations of Cormac McCarthy's work.
One of the most original and satisfying interpretations of Cormac McCarthy's novels to be found anywhere. For instance, Shane Schimpf, in his recent and excellent READER'S GUIDE TO BLOOD MERIDIAN, suggests that the opening line, 'See the child,' is perhaps an allusion to Alexander Pope's 'Essay On Man.' Elisabeth Francisa goes way beyond that. McCarthy repeats the 'See him' as a form of ...

A Powerful Conversation
Don't be fooled, there is no action in this book. It is simply a conversation between two men, after a climatic event occured to bring them together. They speak of life, death, and the meaning behind it all. "The Sunset Limited" is pure McCarthy, and would probably be breathtaking performed by the proper players. It is a short read, but a powerful one. When you close the back cover you will be ...

A very good, dark read...
I read this in 2001, at the suggestion of a good friend, and completely enjoyed the book. It's pretty dark, but is a compelling tale of a man's journey in the old west. I especially enjoyed the sinister character that keeps re-appearing and could be more than just a man.. seems like the same character turns up in lots of Cormac McCarthy's books. Overall, I would recommend this book

A bright collection of insightful essays
Rick Wallach and company have produced an astonishing array of essays on McCarthy's often deep but always greatly rewarding work. I've read some of McCarthy's novels several times, and each time I find some things I hadn't noticed before. Reading these essays in MYTH, LEGEND, DUST has awakened me to yet additional insights and different persectives. Simply amazing.

New Perspective Feels Like Home To Me
Anyone who has read much McCarthy develops a feel for his world, and David Holloway's analysis doesn't try to alter that as much as to awaken you to what was there all along. The "late modern" McCarthy writes on his own terms, often creating a mythology all his own. And McCarthy is definitely a blue collar writer. Legends abound about him disdaining commercialism and refusing money when he had ...
