Researching and Restoring a Classic Airplane
The Corsair was, of course, one of the classic aircraft of World War II. About 12,000 were built, about 50 survive. One of the survivors is KD431. This machine, located at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in England is the subject of this book. Specifically, the book is on the restoration of KD431 to as near war time condition as possible. It is believed that this is the last remaining truly ...

Swashbuckling at its best!
My mother owned a paperback edition of this story many years ago. Yellow, and dog-eared, I must have read it a half dozen times until it finally disintegrated when the binding glue dried out. Simply described, Carolina Corsair is a novel describing the events surrounding the infamous pirate Edward Teach, a.k.a., Blackbeard. Part romance novel, part history, and all adventure, Mr. Tracy spins ...
The Adventures of Captain Horn

High adventure and treasure!
I have no idea why this novel never surpassed "Treasure Island" as a literary success because it's really so much better than that well-known, fine tale! This is a very old book, originally published in 1895 by Charles Scribner's Sons. Here, Captain Horn, his small crew (the ones which survive), and some passengers (including women) are shipwrecked on the coast of South America. It's a ...

We Must Not Forget
As one who was on the scene at the time,I marvel that Gary Corsair has uncovered and bought to light the shocking events that tore through Groveland,Florida in 1949 after four young black men were falsely accused of raping a white woman: two shot to death (one by a mob,one by Sherrif Willis McCall), two railroaded to prison, the homes of their families and friends destroyed by mob violence. Now ...

The Byronic Hero
Lady Lamb called Lord Byron "Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know" which can also apply to Conrad, the pirate and the protagonist, in THE CORSAIR. Conrad, like Byron himself, is an example of the Byronic Hero, i.e., handsome, moody, self-reflecting, a loner and self-destructive. Basically it's the story of a pirate captain who will risk everything, including his own life, to save a slave from a ...

Sea Power
This book is an excellent source of information for anyone with an interest either in the American Civil War or in warfare in general. For the casual reader, one can find interest in the stories of Read's early career and of his swashbuckling adventures. To the historian, one can find interesting insight into the importance of sea power, during the Civil War. This concept has a sort of ...

Fascinating, real-life adventure story on the high seas
The book follows the adventurous and successful exploits of the last practitioner of 'cruiser warfare', Imperial Germany's SMS Emden. The intrepid German light cruiser boldly sallied out of her Tsingtao, China port at the beginning of World War I and single-handedly conducted a strikingly effective and highly spirited anti-shipping campaign in the Indian Ocean. While being pursued by countless ...

A captivating piece of history - very well written
Seton Dearden wrote few books, but those he did write he wrote very well. A Nest of Corsairs: The Fighting Karamanlis of the Barbary Coast takes the reader into the Karamanli family's reign of Tripoli with special emphasis on the British Consulate's position and influence on the royal court. The power and direction of the Sultanate in Constantinople had much impact on how the Tripoli court was ...

One of the best F4U books!
Well worth the price, and probably the best F4U book written to date. This book examines each model with stories from aces, test pilots, and others who flew the plane. Good coverage of the radar equipped night fighters, Corsairs in service in South America, in the movies, and RACERS! Too bad it wasn't put out in hardback.

Test pilot Guyton -- a Good Read
Boone Guyton includes a lot of interesting information on the development history of the Vought Corsair. The narrative is conventionally done, starting with its role in the Pacific war, then a little bit on his getting started in aviation and in the Navy, and finally his flying experiences with Vought. Some unexpected and appreciated extras included his description of reassembly testing of ...

Outstanding look inside the cockpit of the greatest Marine fighter ever!
If you're a fan like I am of "Baa Baa Blacksheep" then you have to have this book! It shows you everything you'd ever need to know about how to fly the Corsair, and wow is it interesting. This is an original World War II training manual. Despite that, it's not a hard read but a really easy to study book -- probably those kids flying these planes back in the War could not be expected to read ...

An excellent title on Pirates from a unique Perspective
I really thought this book was great. It has a unique stance and is not just written from a historical perscpective. Wilson's premise is that the pirate republic of Salle was actually the first democracy (leadership not based on class, race or money) even before the French Revolution, though I'm still a bit skeptical on that point, I thought it was well argued and a good read. I've actually ...

Many of the stories are devoted to activities of young F4U Corsair pilots, with actual accident reports and photos ...

Compared with the Aero series title about the Corsair this books stands out by beating the other on al fronts. It has one page more, but instead of five sideviews you get more than forty. There must be millions of us Fifty- and Sixty-somethings in America still feeling we were born too late to have a chance to fly the great fighters of WWII. For us, Tillman is a timely author.
