The Cosmopolitan
Donna Stonecipher
Coffee House Press
, 2008
A National Poetry Series winner, chosen by John Yau These poems spin tales of traveling in a world both romantic and politicized, a world miniaturized by globalization and haunted by the figure of the cosmopolitan, who is aware of its saturated history, yet inspired by the knowledge that nostalgia is merely "memory decayed to sugar." In the kingdom of Donna Stonecipher's imagination, "a story is always forming to adorn reality," and the fall ...

This was a great read -- don't trust the naysayers.
I can tell you first hand that tending a bar only LOOKS like it might be fun. Cecchini brilliantly articulates why I hated bartending in a poignant page and a half. I read each and every bad review of this book here but I read it anyway and I can also tell you that all of the criticisms can be safely dismissed out of hand. Dictionaries are full of "$10,000 words" and -- in case you've never ...

Where to buy the Histomap
The histomap is a wonderful product, well worth having. If you've been looking for it, but cannot find it anywhere, you should check out the North American Montessori Teachers Association site. They have an authorized reprint available for a reasonable price. I wish Amazon had it, but at least you can get it someplace. (if you need a link, you can email me)
The Global Commonwealth of Citizens: Toward Cosmopolitan Democracy
Daniele Archibugi
Princeton University Press

The Global Commonwealth of Citizens critically examines the prospects for cosmopolitan democracy as a viable and humane response to the challenges of globalization. Arising after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the decisive affirmation of Western-style democracy, cosmopolitan democracy envisions a world politics in which democratic participation by citizens is not constrained by national borders, and where democracy spreads through ...

It's so smart -- and so original
Vanessa Schwartz's book opens with an amazing Look magazine cover from 1958: "Ike's Tragedy" on one side, "Brigitte Bardot conquers America" on the other. Historians have been teaching that this was the era when American popular culture conquered Europe and the world. But Schwartz shows that "Frenchness" became a crucial part of global film culture after WWII. The book is essential reading for ...

In this new book, Ulrich Beck develops his now widely used concepts of second modernity, risk society and reflexive sociology into a radical new sociological analysis of the cosmopolitan implications of globalization. Beck draws extensively on empirical and theoretical analyses of such phenomena as migration, war and terror, as well as a range of literary and historical works, to weave a rich discursive web in which analytical, critical and ...
Cosmopolitan Style: Modernism Beyond the Nation
Rebecca L. Walkowitz
Columbia University Press
, 2007
In this broad-ranging and ambitious intervention in the debates over the politics, ethics, and aesthetics of cosmopolitanism, Rebecca L. Walkowitz argues that modernist literary style has been crucial to new ways of thinking and acting beyond the nation. While she focuses on modernist narrative, Walkowitz suggests that style conceived expansively as attitude, stance, posture, and consciousness helps to explain many other, nonliterary formations ...

An Insightful Look at One Artist's Enuring Contribution
Kobena Mercer has long been a strong presence in the ongoing debate and discourse around issues of race and representation in the practice of artists of color. Much of his work has focused on the postmodern moment. With this important book Mercer now brings his incisive intelligence to bear on one of the premier African American modernists, Romare Bearden. It is no surprise that Mercer has ...
