A Pleasant Surprise
There are some questions that can never be resolved in history, and they can drive you nutty. For example, did George Mallory ("the finest climber of his generation") make the summit of Everest in 1924 before he died on the mountain. Unless his camera or other physical evidence is found at the summit, we will never know for sure. Similar is the dispute over whether Thomas Jefferson fathered ...

The Parting
It's so refreshing to be able to pick up a book and read without all the trash that I find in most books. Anyone can enjoy reading these books, Young and old alike.

I love this series
I love the development of the story lines and characters of this series. I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the conclusion. She introduces several sides to the issues, including the accompanying emotional impact on the families and on the Amish community as a whole. This series is based on an actual event, which makes it all the more interesting to read and contemplate.

Tells the Story Vividly; Grapples with the Larger Social Issues Raised by the Flood
There is a saying, not original to me, that events are of record, but reality is a construct. McCullough does the research necessary to state the essential facts of this historical event. This is no mean task, given all the disinformation and misinformation in the historical record. But what is even more impressive is McCullough's ability to show why there is so much inaccuracy in the writing ...

"I do remember terrible dark things..."
In THE SECRET SCRIPTURE, Irish novelist, poet, and playwright, Sebastian Barry gives us an intimate look at two persons: Roseanne McNulty and Dr. William Grene. It's a fascinating look and one I don't think most readers will soon forget. Roseanne Clear McNulty has been a patient in the Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital in western Ireland for the last sixty years. A native of Sligo, ...

the single most influential series i've read in my life
Cormac McCarthy has the amazing abilitly to envoke emotion using description of action and place. One never gets inside of his characters heads directly (at least not in this particular series) and yet it is the most emotionaly powerful series i have ever encountered. McCarthy taps into the very core of the human life force, our relationships with nature and change. I first read All the ...

Excellent memoir
Little Heathens by Millie Kalish is a wonderful book about the author's life on an Iowa farm in the 1930's. She makes the setting and times come alive and I especially enjoyed getting a glimpse of my parent's generation and what their childhood might have been like. The values she was taught as a child enabled her to become a member of the armed forces, go to college and become a college ...

Great Literary Novel with terrific tension, robust characters, not to be missed!!
The buzz from the literary community surrounding this second novel by Matt Bondurant is more than warranted--this is a fantastic literary novel that has mass market appeal as well due to the author's firm grip of the craft of storytelling, and the tension underlying the action is masterfully done. It is always hard to write about a literary novel as a "page turner" but this is indeed what ...

A must-read for literature and theatre lovers alike...
By far one of the best plays I've read in a long time, maybe even since my love affair with 'Angels in America.' Bitingly funny and horribly tragic, I've yet to find one disappointed fellow reader of Letts' masterpiece.

Not The Best Book In This Series
In Beyond Reach, Lena Adams returns to the small town of her youth, where she becomes the prime suspect in a vicious murder. It is up to her boss, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, and his wife Sara Linton to prove her innocence. Their case is not helped, though, when Lena goes on the run. This book deals more with the character Lena Adams, than the other books in the series, and I found it quite ...

Leaving a light footprint on the good earth
I re-read Leopold's Sand County Almanac every couple of years or so. It's not just a beautifully poetic celebration of the land. Its defense of a new sense of moral responsibility to the environment, spelled out in the book's "The Land Ethic," is a bracing tonic against the modern temptation to take the biosphere for granted. In these days of global warming, fossil fuel depletion, and ...

Magnificent Merry
Summerhill Secrets is a super novel about a 15 yr. old girl, Merry, who follow's God's law and grows as a teenage Christian. The 5 stories in this book are very well written and interesting. This book was a quick read, but still awesome and I learned a lot about the Amish too. Have fun with Merry as she experiences everyday things teenagers can experience today. Possibly the best of the Bloom County collections.
This book is an overview of the first five years of the strip, ranging from the early strips in which the focus is mostly on Milo, through the introductions of Binkley, Bobbi, Cutter John, Opus, Oliver Wendell Jones, Steve Dallas, and finally, Bill The Cat. Personally, I've always had a preference for the early, pre-Bill The Cat strips; I could deal with the silliness inherent in Opus and ...

I give it 3 1/2 stars but don't let that deter you!!
I want to say that this book was enjoyable to read. It had an interesting story and a little bit of humor. It is very different from Peterson's Broadmoor Legacy books and even further from her last series, the Ladies of Liberty. This book opens with the death of her father, George Gallatin. A man with a great heart but no exceptional abilities, he moved his family around teh country ...

I am a homeschool mother. Homeschooling was recommended to me for my 8 year old by an educational consortium of public school administrators, psychologists, and independent Dr.'s in the fields of child development, biology, and classic studies.
