Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6)3591 reviews
J.K. Rowling

Listening Library (Audio), 2005

Beyond the Order of the Phoenix Aftertaste
This is so far in my opinion the best Harry Potter book, together with the number 3, after the rumbles that the fifth one was, it was really refreshing to see a Harry more focused and centered, the history goes with no annoying moments, and it was one of the quickest to read so far. OK, more in detail then: The conflicts between the characters remain, which is great, the bad characters begin ...

Eldest (Inheritance, Book 2)1490 reviews
Christopher Paolini

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2005

Not as good as Eragon
The follow up to Eragon is not quite as good as the original. I liked Eragon more because of the development of Saphira. Now that she's grown up and the relationship between her and her rider has plateaued, the other elements aren't as interesting. Plus, the ending is downright unbelievable and unrealistic given the situation leading up to it.

His Dark Materials Omnibus (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)1067 reviews
Philip Pullman

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2007

Genius
You know how there are those people who say that children's literature is meaningless? Personally, I think they all need to be forced down in a chair (perhaps as in "A Clockwork Orange") to read "His Dark Materials." Like other reviewers, when I finished reading "Harry Potter" I was still on a fantasy kick, but I was rather jaded by the titles I saw out there. They seemed boring, predictable, ...

Slaughterhouse: The Shocking Story of Greed, Neglect, and Inhumane Treatment Inside the U.S. Meat Industry100 reviews
Gail A. Eisnitz

Prometheus Books, 2006

Confirming the gross-ness
This book just confirms the other reading I have done on the subject. Read it if you are ready to get the facts and stop ignoring what I like to refer to as the "gross-ness" of the meat and dairy industry (both in terms of the animals' treatment, and the impact for everyone and everything else). Yuck!!!

Mark Millar, J.G. Jones

Top Cow Productions/Image Comics, 2007

Let Me Explain...
After watching the film, which was senseless, I decided to read the comic out of curiosity to check the source material. I was also intrigued by the many negative reviews I read here. How bad could this thing be, was my question. The vast majority of the surface story was about Super Villains, but that's not what I'm here to talk about. I'm here to make it clear what the story is really ...

Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner (Includes Author's Book of Shadows)457 reviews
Scott Cunningham

Llewellyn Publications, 1993

This must be read by every Wiccan
The reason this book is so important is not because of the information it contains, but because of its historical significance to Wicca. This book provides a firm dividing line between Traditional Wicca, and what is called by some NeoWicca. As any student of Wicca should know, Wicca is a well defined religion with a very specific God and Goddess, specific rituals, and specific mysteries that are ...

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type195 reviews
Doreen Cronin

Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, 2000

Click Clack Moo Cows that teach!
My students love this story (ages 7-12)! And I use it to teach students about the democratic process. This is a wonderful story about the options open to people in a democratic society. I have used it to talk about strikes, expressing your opinions and negotiations. DO my 7 year olds get all that from Click Clack Moo, not that they can articulate but they are getting it on some level. And it ...

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)5871 reviews
J. K. Rowling, Mary GrandPré

Scholastic Paperbacks, 2004

Heart over Mind
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (year 5 at Hogwarts)... This is a very tricky book for me to review. I have mixed feelings about it for a lot of reasons, which I will elucidate momentarily. However, I decided to award it 5 stars, based more on my "gut reaction" than anything else. Here's why: This book is chalk full of some of my absolute favorite moments in the series. The ...

Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable176 reviews
Seth Godin

Portfolio Hardcover, 2003

Short, Sweet, and Accessible
At the heart of this book is the notion of "Moore's idea diffusion curve". It's just a bell-curve that shows innovators (sneezers), early adopters, early/late majority, and laggards. The central theme of the book is that you need to target the front of that curve by appealing your "remarkable" product to them as a niche, and treat them very specially. Contrary to the most popular review here ...

Gail Damerow

Storey Publishing, LLC, 2002

I loved this book!
I read it cover to cover. We will be starting our little farm in 2009, so I have been collecting pertinent reference material. It REALLY spurred my enthusiasm for raising our own food. Now on to "Basic Butchering of Livestock & Game"...

Holy Cow: An Indian Adventure91 reviews
Sarah Macdonald

Broadway, 2004

Hands on unvarnished insight
I was looking for a lived-there book and this one is it! Fun, serious, always insightful observations shared by the author--who does not take herself seriously.

Killing Sacred Cows: Overcoming the Financial Myths That Are Destroying Your Prosperity4 reviews
Garrett B. Gunderson

Greenleaf Book Group LLC, 2008

A financial book that isn't affraid to tackle the issues everyone is complacent with
Killing Sacred Cows is the most powerful financial book I have read and it sets the stage to a productive life both personally and financially. Learn how to empower your personal economy by becoming aware of destructive myths that are perpetuated through traditional resources and the financial media. Not only will you learn how to overcome these myths, you will learn how to live life again. This ...

The Untold Story of Milk: Green Pastures, Contented Cows and Raw Dairy Products25 reviews
Ron Schmid

NewTrends Publishing, Inc., 2003

Real Milk Returns
Schmid very carefully tells the history of milk and once you are informed you will be sickened by current "legal" dairy practices. If you have ever driven by large dairies (especially in Idaho) and inhaled the stink of confined cows and observed the mud and filth they live in this book is a must read. Rock on "Real Milk".

Great service and beautiful pictures of Tuscany but somewhat dissapointed at the lack of an organized route map for efficient traveling to the various villages.

All the Sad Young Literary Men8 reviews
Keith Gessen

Viking Adult, 2008

Oh, how I loved this book!
Keith Gessen is a founding member of the literary journal N+1, a quarterly read I highly recommend! He's in great company with Benjamin Kunkel, another Harvard grad who wrote the hilarious novel, Indecision Indecision: A Novel. Keith mixes up some meditations on marxism in russian history(he's from Russia, attending grad school in Buffalo with side-trips to NYC in these semi-autobiographical ...

Bone Volume 2: The Great Cow Race12 reviews
Jeff Smith

GRAPHIX, 2005

Good series
The only drawback off this TPB is its length - this comics is simplistic so you go through the book fast. But the story is great, characters are engaging and you have to wait for the next volume. Note - this edition is colored and is really beautiful. Can't imaging it in any other quality.

To Ride A Silver Broomstick: New Generational Witchcraft397 reviews
Silver RavenWolf

Llewellyn Publications, 2002

In D!efense of Silver!
It has become a trend to bash Silver Ravenwolf and her writings. As someone who has been a part of The Craft for more than 20 years, this is very disheartening to me. I firmly believe that the politics and in-fighting within The Craft are a detriment to everything our Elders have worked towards. I have noticed these "negative attacks" with not only Silver, but with virtually all of our Craft ...

The Little Book of Hindu Deities: From the Goddess of Wealth to the Sacred Cow (Little Book)22 reviews
Sanjay Patel

Plume, 2006

Cute and Informative
As someone born of Indian parents but not raised in the culture, I always wanted to more about the Hindu deities. This book is a good introduction and the illustrations are adorable. I originally bought the book as a gift for my sister, but ended up buying a copy for myself as well. Some may be put off by the cuteness in which the deities are depicted, but I found it all the more charming and ...
