(Re)defining "cracker" identity
This is an interesting study of cracker culture in Florida. In many parts of the South, and among many Floridians, the name "cracker" carries with it a lot of negative connotations. Within the past 30 years, however, a certain "Florida Cracker Chic" has emerged, and in many communities being cracker is now seen in a much more positive light. Dana Ste.Clair provides a good historical sketch of ...

Excellent summary of one of Florida vernaculars
Brief, but very informative, well documented and organized summary of a neglected (and marginal) theme in architectural history.

A Superb Collection of Nursery Rhymes
Intricate details and warm tones fill the illustrations throughout this superb collection of sixty-two nursery rhymes. Dyer has incorporated a wide variety of traditional nursery rhymes such as Little Jack Horner, Humpty Dumpty, and Peter Piper along with some not so traditional, such as Grandpa Bear's Lullaby, Animal Crackers, and All Asleep. She has divided this medley of rhymes into seven ...

Thoughts from a Transplanted Cracker
All of Janisse's work, but most especially Cracker Childhood, is so very much a snapshot of South Georgia. She grabs you, her reader, by the hand and transports you to her South -- a South where Gone with the Wind is just another goofy movie starring a British actress, a South where Faulkner defied and defined a culture, a South where loggers are systematically erasing the long-leaf pines that ...

Cracker Culture - A Must Read Southern History Book!
Although I highly recommend this book to anyone intested in understanding the culture of the American South, it is especially indispensable to Southerners seeking to understand why their ancestors did the things they did. Cracker Culture is the culmination of many years of research into what has become known as "The Celtic Thesis" (which says that Northerners and Southerners had different ...

Great Book!
I got this book for my 11 year old after he requested it at a book fair where they wanted 5.40 more for it and was thrilled to find it less here. Although, when I got it I figured it was a kids book, I found that after picking it up out of curiousity I enjoyed it too. The switching between the soldier and the dog thoughts are very smooth and the portrayal of a soldier and his relationship with ...

Disappointing Price Guide
I recently acquired a small Cracker Jack prize collection from the 50's-60's. I ordered this book for two purposes: that it would enable me to identify those pieces that were not specifically stamped Cracker Jack or NOSCO (the toy manufacturer) and that it contained a price guide. The book is sadly lacking. Many of the photographs are redundant ... full page photographic layouts of the same ...

Teaching Children a Sense of Place
The children's book KISSIMMEE PETE is a signifiant and beautiful contribution to teaching Florida children a sense of place, and a sense of the uniqueness of the state that is their home. KISSIMMEE PETE is a wonderfully simple child's story told in the finest tradition of old-time storytellers; the illustrations accompanying the story are beautifully imaginative and perfect for the story told. ...

Adorable and fun!
Henry buys a spy kit. He and his dog, Mudge, canvas the neighborhood to "flirt with danger" and "steal secrets". One day Henry finds a secret code and is determined to crack it. Easy reading level with short chapters gives the hesitant reader a real sense of ...

Lighthearted!
Someone gave this book to me, and I am certainly glad that they did. Ms. Snyder does a great job at giving the reader a good laugh over everyday situations that women face. She does this in an uplifting way and ends each tale with a simple prayer for 'help' to our Creator......very nice. I enjoyed this book, it was a quick read with a great uplifting flow to it!

Florida Atmosphere
Adventure against the lush Florida wilderness. I grew up here and have lived eleswhere, and wild Florida is very wild indeed. Lea Grambling has a sure command of his art, accurate and efficient in his discription of an environment that many who even live in Florida cannot imagine, brisk and commanding in his plot, and hard edged in his action scenes. I was inspired to run out and explore the ...

Tremendously Funny, Touching, and Incredibly Readable
Published in 1977, Joyce Burditt-Rebeta's THE CRACKER FACTORY was one of the great bestsellers of the decade, going through at least 14 printings by 1980. There's a reason for that: it is one of the most compulsively readable novels I have encountered, a novel that I picked up one Saturday afternoon and read all the way to the end in a single sitting. The novel concerns Cassie Barrett, a ...

Pleasant collection
Mrs. Bruce has long been a fixture on the Florida storytelling scene. She began the state storytelling group in 1980. These are a nice collection of stories she has gathered through the years. The style is somewhat pedestrian, but anyone wanting to add Florida lore will find this book useful.
