Arts & Crafts Ideals: Wisdom from the Arts & Crafts Movement in America1 review
Yoshiko Yamamoto, Bruce Smith, ...

Northwestern University Press, 1999

Arts and Crafts philosophy
The book "Arts and Crafts Ideals" by Bruce Smith, Yoshiko Yamamoto, Gail Ynque is for those who like the arts and crafts style and would like to know how it was started. The book takes a philosophical approach to the movement by having each of its seven chapters follow a philosophy discipline. For example chapter 2 is titled design, which could be esthetics and chapter 5 is education or ...

In the Arts and Crafts Style7 reviews
Barbara Mayer

Chronicle Books, 2006

Excellent entry point into Arts and Crafts Movement
An arts and crafts website recommended this book as the place for beginners in the movement. Following their lead, we purchased the book and have not regretted it. The advice is true. This is excellent background for the movement, giving it a skeleton which can be used to hang more and more on, including sources, wonderful photographical examples, and resources. We're finding it is desirable ...

Craftsman Homes: More than 40 Plans for Building Classic Arts & Crafts-Style Cottages, Cabins, and Bungalows6 reviews
Gustav Stickley

The Lyons Press, 2002

Beautiful houses, great interior ideas
This is a reprint of a house plan catalog from 1909. These books are actually exact reprints of original plan books from the turn of the century (1880-1925, roughly). Dover adds little or no modern explanations, just presenting the catalog as it was. So when one looks to review these books, one isn't really judging the modern-day publisher, or editing, or writing. The only modern element is the ...

Arts and Crafts Style1 review
Isabelle Anscombe

Phaidon Press, 1996

Great Book
I bought this book a fair while ago and I still love looking at it. I love colour photos and this book has tons of them. The pieces in this book are simply beautiful. They cover everything from tapestries to furniture to painting to metalwork. A good general overview of the important designs in the arts and crafts style. I was most impressed by the examples of furniture.

Living in the Arts and Crafts Style: Your Complete Home Decorating Guide3 reviews
Charlotte Kelley

Chronicle Books, 2006

How I'd Decorate a Bungalow
The Arts and Crafts style reached its zenith in the early twentieth century, just about the time the bungalow house style was spreading across the country. Today we are seeing a lot of bungalow houses built about that time being 'gentrified' into more modern residences as people are moving back into the urban areas and avoiding the commute. This book is a guide to the styles in which these ...

Windows With Style Do It Yourself Wind (Arts & Crafts for Home Decorating)17 reviews
Cowles Creative Publishing

Creative Publishing+int'l, 1997

Great Book
This book is great! I purchased it because I mainly wanted an easy way to make hobbled roman shades. I found articles on the net that tell you how to make roman shades but I did not feel that they explained the process well enough. So after purchasing this book Windows with Style: Do-it-yourself window treatments, I made the roman shades for my daughters bedroom, living room, and bathroom. It was ...

Kid Style Nature Crafts1 review

Sterling, 1997

Kid Style Nature Crafts
Here is another great book by this author that makes learning nature and science fun. The seasonal organization of the book is helpful in that materials are available for the projects during the time the book suggests making them. Like "Nature Crafts for Kids",(by the same author) this book contains wonderful pictures of the projects and step by step instructions. Some of the projects are ...

How to Make Mission Style Lamps and Shades (Dover Craft Books)2 reviews
Popular Mechanics Co.

Dover Publications, 1982

Authentic turn-of-the century Mission Designs
This book is a collection of actual Popular Mechanics magazine projects to make Mission style lamps that were originally published in the twenties. However, some techniques presented are outdated, but the daigrams for the proportions and measurements of the lamps and shades are the real jewel here. Some of the instructions are slightly vague and at times a bit hard to follow. But the measurements ...

The Arts and Crafts Movement in Europe and America: Design for the Modern World 1880-19201 review
Wendy Kaplan

Thames & Hudson, 2004

What a fascinating book!
This is an exhibition catalog and ... I actually read it! Most catalogs are useful only for the pictures, but this one is a fascinating read about the emergence of the arts and crafts movement in England in the nineteenth century and its spread to the countries in Europe and the United States. It's organized by country, and focuses on the social context in each one, particularly how each ...

In the Craftsman Style: Building Furniture Inspired by the Arts & Crafts Tradition (In The Style)7 reviews

Taunton, 2001

An Excellent Guide to Building Arts & Crafts Style Furniture
This is the best introduction to building Arts & Crafts style furniture I have read. I found it to contain an excellent balance of history, theory, project plans, and inspiration. The articles are well-written, accurate, and thorough. The photos and diagrams are crystal clear and colorful. The first section (approx. 30 pages) introduces the Arts & Crafts style, highlights the schools of design ...
