Pastel School8 reviews
Hazel Harrison

Reader's Digest, 1996

Beginners start with this!
This book is incredibly helpful with demonstrations, suggestions for colors, layering options, and beautiful illustrations with various styles shown. The only thing that would have been even more helpful to this book was a little more information about paper and pastel suppliers and the difference in quality between them. I'm still giving it 5 stars though!

How to Write a Children's Picture Book Volume II: Word, Sentence, Scene, Story: Learning from Leo the Late ...10 reviews
Eve Heidi Bine-Stock

E & E Publishing, 2006

A Constant Companion
Eve Heidi Bine-Stock's HOW TO WRITE A CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK (VOLUMES I, II and III)is a constant companion and rich resource in the planning and revision of picture books. The deconstruction of picture books, and the detailed classification of crucial characteristics - using classic picture books to illustrate each detailed point - make these books invaluable. Although I particularly use Volume ...

Crayon Shinchan, Vol. 16 reviews
Yoshito Usui

ComicsOne, 2002

The Fun of being Five and Japanese
The back cover says I quote: "...celebrates the terrible power of destruction and indicency wielded by toddlers everywhere". And it's true and so much FUN! Each volume of this English translated manga by Comics One contains two stories in color and the rest are in black and white, or with "tones" used in Japan. You get to see what is the life of 5 year old Shinnosuke Nohara,Shinchan being the ...

Harold's Fairy Tale (Further Adventures of with the Purple Crayon)6 reviews

HarperTrophy, 1994

2nd best of the series
Impossible to beat the original "Harold and the Purple Crayon", this is certainly the next best thing. This story is appealing to a somewhat older child than the original story, as it is a bit more complex. It is better than "Trip to the Sky", which has an odd story line that children do not follow as well. The new books that go with the television series are weak in comparison to the books ...

Golden Books are Awesome
I read this to our son, sadly, after he "out grew" these books, they were passed on. Happily, after searching all over I found these treasures on Amazon and now have a new collection for our beautiful grand daughter to enjoy.

Collins Pastels Workshop3 reviews
Jackie Simmonds

Collins, 1994

really inspiring
I can't say enough about this book. It doesn't matter if you are experianced or have never touched a pastel before, everyone can gain something from this wonderful book. Not only does she lay out the different materials and papers, she touches on just about everything such as color theory, perspective and composition. This is so much more than just a book on pastels. Beyond all the useful ...

Not in the House, Newton!4 reviews
Judith Heide Gilliland

Clarion Books, 1995

This book sparks creativity and can be a great teaching tool
I am an Elementary Literacy Resource Teacher, and I often recommend this book to teachers who are working with their students on color words. What better way for children to learn about the color red than to imagine everything they draw with their red crayon coming to life! This can spark much creativity in children's writing, whether independently or dictated to their teacher. A must for ...

The Crayon Kingdom (Story Books)3 reviews
Jennie Bishop

Warner Press, 1999

Crayon Kingdom more than a colorful book!
When I first opened the Crayon Kingdom, I thought it was a beautiful book full of interesting characters like the Veggie Tales but as I started to get into the story, I found it to be much more. Teaching our children about different cultures and how we all work together to make a beautiful world so is important and this author does a wonderful job of doing just that! The book is easy to read ...

The Adventures of Harold and the Purple Crayon (Complete Text of All Four Stories)3 reviews
Crockett Johnson

HarperCollins, 2000

A delightful, imaginative tale
When I encountered this book for the first time, I lamented the fact that I was unaware of it when my daughter was young. She would have loved it. Harold is a toddler with a magic purple crayon. With it, he can make anything he wants and engage in the most imaginative and creative adventures. When Harold needs something, he simply draws it. Some of Harold's adventures are flying in a rocket, ...

A Picture for Harold's Room: A Purple Crayon Adventure (I Can Read Books)5 reviews
Crockett Johnson

Topeka Bindery, 1999

THIS IS A FABULOUS BOOK TO READ OUT LOUD
I adored this book when I was a kid (some 30 years ago) and since then I have read it out loud to lots of kids -- including groups in hospitals and at libraries. They always love it -- expecially the age 3 to 5 crowd. The illustrations are very simple, but really appealing to kids. It's also a terrific book for beginning readers since the vocabulary is pretty simple.

Hand Art (Chicken Socks) (Klutz Chicken Socks)6 reviews

Klutz, 2005

Great fun for many ages!
We love this book. It has 20 different animals/aliens/bugs you can draw all from tracing your hand a certain way. The instructions are helpful and you can easily restock the supplies. All you need is some pompoms and googly eyes, though you can just draw those in if you'd prefer. My 5 year old can do these by herself and my 3 year old needs help. But I think it's fun, they do as well, and ...

Harold y el lapiz color morado3 reviews
Crockett Johnson, Teresa Mlawer

Rayo, 1995

Tan encantador en español como en inglés (Just as charming)
Even grownups enjoy this imaginative story of a boy whose purple crayon takes him on a magical journey. The Spanish translation retains all the magic of the English original, such that a friend in his 20s became glued to the book when I first brought it to his attention. Caution: Although the story is understandable to children as young as 3 or 4, it is longer than it looks! Begin the story ...

Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs 6-copy Counter Display w/ Crayons5 reviews
Ian Whybrow

Random House Books for Young Readers, 2003

Great book!
My son (just turned 2) refused to leave school without this book. We've had it now for a week and I've read it to him now approx 1.8 billion times, and I now have to return the book, so I'm getting his own copy. I don't know if this is a boy thing or just a kid thing, but he is absolutly fascinated by dinosaurs now and can even point out where tyrannosaurus is or stegmalopohopanopalisaurus (he ...
