True Notebooks: A Writer's Year at Juvenile Hall51 reviews
Mark Salzman

Vintage, 2004

Incredibly worthwhile!
I was assigned to read this book for my Honors English 10 class, and I must admitt, I was not too thrilled with this being chosen for me. This is nowhere near my type of book. I like to read suspense and thrillers with the occasional teen books (you have to admitt they're hilarious), so I thought this would either be a waste of time or a major let-down. To my surprise, I loved it! I figured ...

They Broke the Law-You Be the Judge: True Cases of Teen Crime1 review
Thomas A. Jacobs

Free Spirit Publishing, 2003

Judges in the making
I have used this book with juveniles I work with on probation. It is neat to see them problem solve the cases and how many times they would actually punish the crime much harder than what the judge actually decided. This book creates great discussions and has a lot of value in the therapeutic groups for problem solving. I highly recommend this book to use with teens in all different ways.

Hearts and Hands: Creating Community in Violent Times1 review
Luis Rodriguez

Seven Stories Press, 2003

Great Book
This is a must read for youth workers who get (or need to get) the political and social justice context of their field. It was written by someone in the trenches and not the ivory tower of foundations, university or some nonprofits. It is well written and thought provoking.

8 Ball Chicks37 reviews
Gini Sikes

Anchor, 1998

I hate to say it's a FUN read, but it really is.
I agree with Amazon's review of 8 Ball Chicks. I don't think Gini Sikes had anything particularly insightful to say, but I give it the max rating because these women's stories are CRAZY (i.e. really entertaining to read, especially for people who love to read about how messed up the world is). Whoever you are, this book is worth reading.

The Cross and the Switchblade58 reviews
David Wilkerson

Jove, 1986

Cross & the Switchblade
This Book changed my life when I read it in jail in summer of 1970,after the hippie years of many many drugs and all that went along with it.I would surely be dead now if not for this book and the Lord Jesus who caused David Wilkerson to write it.Jail was the only place I would have stopped to read it at the time.So I am sure the Lord wanted me there then.I have been reformed since that day.I ...

Stanton Samenow

Crown, 2004

Amazing Insight
Dr. Samenow will enlighten you with the manner in which he approaches this topic. He is honest in his approach and will leave you with a profound understanding of how a criminal behaves and why. I found this book to be fascinating and a must read for those interested in this topic

Juvenile Justice In America
I feel that this is a very helpful book of reference on Todays Topic of Juveniles.

The Juvie Three1 review
Gordon Korman

Hyperion Book CH, 2008

a real disappointment
When I saw the author was Gordon Korman, I picked this new title up with enthusiasm. Jake, Reinvented was wonderful, and his Island, Everest, and On the Run series were all page turners. Juvie Three reads as a unedited first draft, with weak characters, bad writing, clumsy narrative (both highly uncharacteristic of Korman), and an uninteresting plotline that dragged rather than revved. ...

G-Dog and the Homeboys: Father Greg Boyle and the Gangs of East Los Angeles11 reviews
Celeste Fremon

University of New Mexico Press, 2008

Simple, straightforward story about one of the saints among us
This book is quite unlike any other that I have read on crime or gangs, both in style and in substance. The style is very simple. Fremon makes no attempt to be objective. She makes no effort to put the story into any larger context. She does not come across like a professional writer of any kind. Her ego is absent from the work. Instead, she tells a story, a simple, moving story. The ...

Relief For Hurting Parents: How To Fight For The Lives Of Teenagers: How To Prepare Younger Children For Less ...4 reviews
Buddy Scott, R. A. "Buddy" Scott

Allon Publishing, 1997

A wonderful help for my family - to be passed on.
Our group of four couples "taught" ourselves the associated class based on the principles in this Christian-based book; three couples for rescue and one for prevention. I am now teaching the class for the third time and, as word spreads, several dozen families have been helped in rescuing their rebellious teens and by learning prevention techniques and guiding principles used in raising their ...

Nip The Buds, Shoot The Kids17 reviews
Kenzaburo Oe

Marion Boyars Publishers Ltd, 2000

Powerful
I have a friend once suffered from pneumonia. She read this book in the hospital when she had broken one of her ribs from a coughing fit. That is how pained and weak she was at that time. After she read the book she said she forgot her own anguish and cried for the suffering characters in this touching and tender book. I picked it up and have never been the same again. It made me angry, sad, and ...

Shared Beginnings, Divergent Lives: Delinquent Boys to Age 70
John H. Laub, Robert J. Sampson

Harvard University Press, 2006

This book analyzes newly collected data on crime and social development up to age 70 for 500 men who were remanded to reform school in the 1940s. Born in Boston in the late 1920s and early 1930s, these men were the subjects of the classic study Unraveling Juvenile Delinquency by Sheldon and Eleanor Glueck (1950). Updating their lives at the close of the twentieth century, and connecting their adult experiences to childhood, this book is ...

Aggression Replacement Training: A Comprehensive Intervention for Aggressive Youth4 reviews
Arnold P. Goldstein, Barry Glick, ...

Research Press, 1998

A handbook for Teen Agression for anyone!
I picked up this book expecting it to be somewhat dry and dull. I was wrong. As the parent of a child with violent tendencies, I found things to help me. As a Social Work student planning on specializing in kids like mine, I found it a book I'll be glad to have for a long time. I have reccommended it to teachers and administrators, counsellors and other professionals as well. I'm seriously ...
