Non-Designer's Design Book, The (3rd Edition)210 reviews
Robin Williams

Peachpit Press, 2008

Excellent book - fun to read and many useful examples
Fun, practical, readable and packed with examples are just a few of the words that came to mind as I was reading "The Non-Designer's Design Book" by Robin Williams. She has done it again and produced an updated version of a classic that is thoroughly enjoyable to read. I feel the book was written specifically for me - someone who is looking to increase their Design skills, develops ...

Design Basics11 reviews
David A. Lauer, Stephen Pentak

Wadsworth Publishing, 2008

An absolute classic for anyone working in the visual arts.
Back in college, two decades ago, one of my art professors required this book for every single one of his classes. He even offered to personally repay students who could not afford to keep their copy, if they promised not to sell it back to the bookstore. He told us that the best thing we could do for our careers in art was to keep this book. He was right. I've had my 2nd edition copy for twenty ...

Delivers as promised
Book is an excellent introduction to research design for qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods designs. Also, the first chapter goes through the different theoretical perspectives from which reseach proceeds, so you can understand the ...

Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series)249 reviews
Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, ...

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1994

THE design patterns book
This book is a classic and doesn't require any further presentations. It is THE Design Patterns bible and every OO programmer should read at least a couple of times. The samples are in C++ and sometimes Smalltalk but that really doesn't change anything even if you are a Java or C# guy. If you are looking for a quick way into patterns I'd recommend Head First: Design Patterns as your 1st ...

Understanding by Design, Expanded 2nd Edition28 reviews
Grant Wiggins, Jay McTighe

Prentice Hall, 2005

Fresh approach to curriculum design
I've used this book for three years in my graduate Curriculum Design courses for teachers. My students are practicing teachers who have seen dozens of lesson planning approaches and don't need some new theory just for the fun of it. But Wiggins and McTighe present a fresh perspective that doesn't so much replace as reposition traditional approaches. It boils down to what they call backward ...

Understanding by Design: Professional Development Workbook10 reviews
Jay McTighe, Grant Wiggins

Association for Supervision & Curriculum Deve, 2004

Backward design fan
This book complements in practical form the ideas presented in Understanding by Design (UbD). I am using this book as a guide for the design of courses online in higher education. Both have been a wonderful aid to rationalize the amount of resources that I must include in the courses online that I am developing. They are effective tools to determine in concise form and practices the synchronous ...

Look for the new edition

Head First Design Patterns (Head First)242 reviews
Elisabeth Freeman, Eric Freeman, ...

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2004

Very good book
I'm relatively new to Design Patters. Prior to reading this book I had read several other material on the web trying to get my head around design patterns and although that material was helpful, it didn't fully clarify to me the intent and usages of these patterns. However, when I read a sample chapter of this book online (on the Decorator Pattern), I instantly took a liking to it. The book has a ...

Computer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interface. Third Edition, Revised30 reviews
David A. Patterson, John L. Hennessy

Morgan Kaufmann, 2007

Must Read - gem of its kind
I'm a software developer and avid reader of math and tech books. This book is a gem of its kind. Positives: 1. Each line in this book has a purpose and you'll definitely learn 2. The author didn't assume you to be a dumb reader; rather he'll influence you enough to come up with your own computer design. 3. For any reader, all the questions that could arise from learning each page will be ...

Stone by Design14 reviews
Lew French

Gibbs Smith, Publisher, 2005

True Beauty
This book is pure pleasure. The artfulness in creating the spaces we live in with stone in pattern, an organic extension of this earth. This is not a 'paint by numbers' how-to book, rather, like looking at a Rembrandt, ultimate examples of stone taken to true art.

Universal Principles of Design49 reviews
William Lidwell, Kritina Holden, ...

Rockport Publishers, 2003

Tremendous value
What's great about this book is it's organization and brevity. The authors articulate the design concepts in clear manner and supply concrete examples (on opposing pages) to add weight and understanding to the written explanation. Furthermore all concepts are linked to the canonical papers from which they come as well as the more modern advances in the field. It's a book your feel comfortable ...

Design Elements: A Graphic Style Manual11 reviews
Timothy Samara

Rockport Publishers, 2007

Well written and fun!
Amazing book by Timothy. It's perfect for young designers, unlike myself, who need to learn basics in graphic design. As a more experienced professional I had fun reading the book and I'm gonna keep it in my office for use of all new interns so they find out a little more by themselves. The only downside I see is the small grey texts, but fortunately my eyes are still in perfect conditions.

Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to (X)HTML, StyleSheets, and Web Graphics33 reviews
Jennifer Niederst Robbins

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2007

Robust start to (X)HTML/CSS
I rate this book with 5 stars for being a solid introduction to (X)HTML and CSS and for being clear, easy to follow, and colourful. I disagree with the previous reviewer BB, who said the book was not for beginners and rated it with one star. He mentions Jennifer N. Robbins uses vocabulary she hasn't defined before. Well, if he's talking about terms like web browser, web server, or link, I ...

Wiley, 2005

Design Drawing13 reviews
Francis D. K. Ching

Wiley, 1997

Drafting book for Design Students
While Ching does cover some aspects of drawing outside of those needed for drafting, the primary focus is on architectural drafting. This is a technical book intended for design students. It is not a do-it-yourself learn-to-draw manual. Most often, this book will be a textbook in a design class. As such, it is excellent. The instructions are clear and well written, the drawings are simple ...
