Yesterday/Today: Right Wing Uses Same Tactics
With a former Supreme Court Justice warning the USA today (March 10, 2006) about starting down the road toward a dictatorship, it seemes fitting to re-visit the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in the 1950s when the right-wing was trying to scare our citizens into giving the government supreme power, just as neocons are trying now. Elia Kazan defends his decision to name names ...

Great buy!
I purchased this book for my boyfriend for christmas and I've kind of stolen it back (we live together so it's not a big deal lol). This is my favorite anime of all times. I love the story, I love the characters, and I especially love Sousuke and Kaname together. Even my boyfriend who "doesn't like anime" loves this series and wants to cosplay from it! *omgshock* I reccomend EVERYTHING that ...

His Best Work Yet!
I'm a huge fan of both his music and his comics, and this diary strip has entertained me for years. Finally collected, hopefully the world will see the genius behind this strange man. Similar to Peanuts in some ways, although not innocent, the ideas he captures have a simple, everyman quality, to which anyone can relate. Burlington, VT residents and visitors will see the town and its ...

Long Live The Blue Dog!
This is a weighty (but not cumbersome) coffee table book that any thinking, feeling human being would be happy to own. Ever since I saw some original Blue Dog paintings in New Orleans, I've wanted to own one of them. Alas, I'm too poor. This book captures the spirit of the little alien-looking pooch and lets me borrow it for a price I can manage.

previewed the book and met the author
First: the author is really serious about accuracy in reproducing textiles from historical dress, and this isn't something to pick up prior to whipping up a colonial-era dress for Halloween. Second: textile swatches are generous and encourage touchy-feely types to compare to modern textiles. Author has been working on this for a while, and has finally produced a reference guide to Georgian ...

A Must for The Art Enthusiast
My mother bought this book in 1970 and it is a precious family treasurer. Our library board which is in the process of fund-raising for a new library is considering this book as a drawing card for donations for a give-away. It is one which board members said they would love to own. Mother's large heavy book has several large prints that can be framed. It's a heartwarming book which emphasizes ...

Excellent, But Know What You're Getting
Subtitles that promise more than the book delivers are far more common than they ought to be. This book is a refreshing exception to that pattern. It's subtitled "the story of the family that built the World Trade Center," and that's *exactly* what you get. _Men of Steel_ is the story of the rise and fall of a family construction company and the stormy relationships among the men who built ...

SEEING IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT
I simply saw Robert Wilson's breathtakingly theatrical production of Richard Wagner's LOHENGRIN at the Metropolitan Opera one time, a few seasons ago, and I was hooked. This production, although certainly unconventional--there is absolutely nothing representational or realistic on the stage for the entire length of the performance--tries to help the viewer listen even more carefully to the ...

A "must have" book
This is simply a "must have" book for anyone interested in the dynamics of aircraft, flight control, and evolution of the modern aircraft. Airplane Stability and Control can be read as an aviation history book, as a compendium of the technical problems that arose in the development of airplanes, and as a manual for solving these problems. The book is a beacon that guides the design of new ...

Wartime Horrors
"Icons of Grief" is a fascinating critical study of producer Val Lewton's RKO horror films within a World War II context. Historian Alexander Nemerov examines the subtle power of Lewton's low-budget chillers (notably "Cat People," "I Walked With a Zombie" and "The Ghost Ship") and the cultural reflection upon wartime America. By providing new insights on Lewton and his work, Nemerov encourages ...

I have used this book as the text in my Costume Design class for years and find it is the only one to my knowledge that covers both the conceptual aspects of costuming for the theatre as well the craft of rendering and construct. It even addresses historical information briefly. I was saddened to hear that the book was out of print. I am hoping a new edition will be out soon
