Golosa: A Basic Course in Russian, Book 1 (4th Edition) 19 reviews Richard M. Robin, Karen Evans-Romaine, ...
Prentice Hall, 2006
Not a self study book This book is not meant for self study, it is intended for college level instruction. This is the book I used when I took Russian in college. The publisher has a website with downloadable videos to aid the text. The lessons inside the book are great, but not intended for self study.

Schaum's Outline of Russian Grammar 24 reviews James S. Levine
McGraw-Hill, 1999
making russian easier I had purchased this gramma book for myself over a year ago. Found explanations and exercises strengthened by Russian skills. Only let down being there was not a dictionary in the back of the text for the words used throughout. Nevertheless this is a very useful text to have and therefore purchased an identical copy for a very dear friend who is doing Russian.

The Big Silver Book of Russian Verbs (Big Books) 12 reviews Jack Franke
McGraw-Hill, 2004
Excellent Resource I particularly like the way the book provides various examples for each verb in everyday sentence form. These examples give the student a little extra added punch that the 501 Verbs book (an already excellent resource in itself) lacks.

Roots of the Russian Language: An Elementary Guide to Wordbuilding (NTC Russian Series) 7 reviews George Z. Patrick
National Textbook Company, 1989
A must-have for serious students of Russian I first heard about this book from my college Russian teacher, who gave it a strong endorsement as a must-have for all serious students of Russian. I couldn't agree more. This book provides Russian language roots alphabetically and lists around 3-10, sometimes even more words that are derived from that particular root. Memorization of the root leads to a rapid expansion of vocabulary derived from ...

Workbook/Laboratory Manual to accompany Nach Book 1 3 reviews Sophia Lubensky, Gerard L. Ervin, ...
McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2001
excellent tool for beginners Let me just start off by saying that I've only been studying Russian for about two months now, and thus have had the book for a short amount of time, but already it has been very useful in learning Russian handwriting. The book is easy to comprehend and a must for Nachalo book 1!

English-Russian, Russian-English Dictionary 65 reviews Kenneth Katzner
Wiley, 1994
THE standard in foreign language dictionaries Ideal for translating everything from "The Tale of Igor's Campaign" to contemporary colloquial Russian.
Unlike other dictionaries, Katzner's identifies literary obsolete, colloquial, and even vulgar words thus sparing the student of potentially embarrassing moments. Knowing the difference between "kushats" and "zhrats" might make for a more pleasant dining experience or the Russian ...

The New Penguin Russian Course: A Complete Course for Beginners (Penguin Handbooks) 59 reviews Nicholas J. Brown
Penguin (Non-Classics), 1996
Best foreign language learner's book, bar none I have studied on my own at various levels of seriousness 6 languages in my life, (some to the extent of becoming fully fluent, some becoming basically conversational, and some starting and giving up out of disinterest or dislike for the language in general) and amid the many books I've used for all the languages, I found this book to be the best book for any independent foreign language learner ...

Oxford Russian Dictionary 12 reviews
Oxford University Press, USA, 2007
best russian english dictionary I have many Russian English dictionaries, including some you can only get in Russia and some written entirely in Russian and this is by far the most complete and helpful dictionary I have. I use it almost exclusively.
I must confess though that I don't use the English-> Russian part very often. I'm usually translating from Russian. I usally learn new words from movies and books and am not ...

Teach Yourself Russian Complete Course Package (Book + 2CDs) (Teach Yourself . . . Complete Courses) 17 reviews Daphne West

A Good Introduction I am using this text and its CDs to follow Pimsleur Conversational Russian. I used the 8 CD Pimsleur to jumpstart my vocabulary and pronunciation. Now I am working on my understanding of grammar and expanding my vocabulary using this Teach Yourself Russian.
This is a good introductory text that fits a slower effort than you would make at university. Those of us who have a life --as opposed ...

The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom 294 reviews Slavomir Rawicz
The Lyons Press, 1997
A Mythic Tale The Long Walk is one of the greatest books I have ever read. The decades long battle over its authenticity is, I think, a testament to its power. Only a work of literature that brings such palpable reality to the reader could have withstood the firestorm of controversy surrounding it from so many corners.
Concerning its authenticity, I think there should be some humility shown on all sides. ...

Russian For Dummies (For Dummies (Language & Literature)) 18 reviews Andrew, Ph.D. Kaufman, Serafima, Ph.D. Gettys, ...
For Dummies, 2006
Trying to get a grip on Russian? This book teaches you the basics of Russian in a useful way. You don't have to read straight through either. You can skip to the part you want, like writing letters. I don't think it will teach you Russian on it's own. I suggest investing in the Rosetta Stone Rosetta Stone V3: Russian, Level 1 program and use this book to complement it. The problem is that this book does not use the Cyrillic ...

Easy Russian Phrase Book: Over 690 Basic Phrases for Everyday Use (Dover Easy Phrase Books) 10 reviews Dover
Dover Publications, 1995
Wonderful Introduction I have never read most of these authors and each story was as enthralling as the previuos one. I had a great time using the Russian side of the book and trying to read out the words. Fabulous having the orginal language next to the English translation. A bit hard for beginner readers, but worth a shot.

The New Analytical Greek Lexicon 12 reviews Wesley J. Perschbacher
Hendrickson Publishers, 1990
an indispensable help As a student of New Testament Greek, I find this book to be an invaluable addition to my library. Every word in the Greek New Testament is listed alphabetically, with a cross reference to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, and the Greek word's definition, location, and source. The lexicon also contains charts of the definite article, the declension of nouns and adjectives, and the conjugation of ...

Essential Russian Grammar 11 reviews Brian Kemple
Dover Publications, 1993
You are stupid if you don't buy it I wish I had discovered this little guide earlier; it would have saved so much work.
Intended as study aid & reference, it excels at precisely that. Deceptively slim, it packs all the essentials in an accessible form. The section on propositions (which are used very idiomatically in Russian) demystifies with hand-slapping-forehead clarity. Similarly for (im)perfective verb moods. And it ...

5000 Russian Words: With All Their Inflected Forms and Other Grammatical Information : A Russian-English ... 7 reviews Richard L. Leed, Slava Paperno
Slavica Pub, 1987
As good as it gets. I believe the previous review is too critical of this text. Of the other Russian books of this type with which I'm familiar (501 Russian Verbs, Big Silver Book of Russian Verbs), none approach the amount of material in 5000 Russian Words. Simply stated, it has virtually every verb in these books, plus many more verbs and non-verbs. Almost every inch of each page is covered with text. It is ...

Oxford Picture Dictionary: English/Russian (Oxford Picture Dictionary) 2 reviews Jayme Adelson-Goldstein, Norma Shapiro
Oxford University Press, USA, 2008
great for learning English I'm an ESL teacher, and I've had two Russian-speaking students request this book. It's well laid out, and the illustrations are clear and colorful. I don't read Cyrillic, but the other reviewer mentioned a mis-translation; hopefully such errors are few. The book is very well made. In some cases, I felt that the English words were more European than American, but still understandable. ...
