A concordance to the Septuagint and the other Greek versions of the Old Testament (including the Apocryphal ...2 reviews
Edwin Hatch

Akademische Druck- u. Verlagsanstalt, 1975

A thick, but helpful tool
This is a thick book, both physically in its size, and in the material it contains. It lists every Greek word in the Septuagint (canonical and apocryphal), followed by the Hebrew words corresponding to the Greek ones, and then every book and verse the word appears in, and the context of each verse! Appendix One has all the Greek proper names. Appendix two gives a complete concordance of the Greek ...

The Canadian Dictionary of ASL3 reviews

The University of Alberta Press, 2002

Mother of All ASL Books!
To make this short and sweet, I'm educated Deaf. This book is one of the best books I cannot look away from! Historically, authors who are not deaf created some of other "ASL" books, which are rarely benefits for many who want to learn about deaf people and their language. Even I'm from the United States, I strongly recommend everyone to check out The Canadian Dictionary of ASL because it ...

Dictionnaire Araméen-Hébreu (Aramaic-Hebrew Dictionary)2 reviews
Ezra Zion Melamed

Feldheim Pub, 1992

Excellent Talmudic Dictionary
Unlike the Jastrow, in which you must look up basic verb forms in order to get the derivations, in this dictionary, since it is confined to the Babylonian Talmud while the Jastrow covers more texts, there is more space so common verb forms and even conjugations are listed separately. In the Jastrow, the definitions are longer and there are examples of context, but this dictionary simply puts one ...

The color dictionary of flowers and plants for home and garden2 reviews
Roy Hay

Crown Publishers, 1969

Sorry to see that this book apparently is not in print...
...because when a flower or plant absolutely stymies me, this is my first and best reference. The organization of photos (and the size and quality of the photos, themselves: six to a page in the paperback edition; these are not huge, but big enough to document the telling detail) together with brief, but sufficient alphabetical descriptions following the "color" dictionary invariably deliver ...

Le Nouveau Petit Robert de la langue française 20083 reviews
Paul Robert (Auteur); Josette Rey-Debove (Auteur); Alain Rey (Auteur)

Dictionnaires Le Robert, 2007

The best French language dictionary
I just bought the Nouveau Petit Robert 2008, and I'm delighted with it. It's very complete. It's been updated and amplified. It's the best French language dictionary you can get. If you're studying French or are a francophile or simply need to use French, you need this dictionary in addition to a good French/English, English/French dictionary. Helene Cardona, author of The Astonished ...

Collins Robert French / English - English / French Unabridged Dictionary / Le Robert et Collins Dictionnaire ...3 reviews

French & European Publications Inc, 2006

wonderfully accurate and useful
I realize that this dictionary is expensive, but it's probably the best assest you can have for your french efforts. Each word is analyzed in context of certain sentences, so if you've seen a word used a certain way, it's very, very easy to find a translation. I used this dictionary the entire way through a 7-week no-english-allowed study in France, and I never had a single false quotation. I ...

Collins Robert College French to English and English to French Dictionary (Robert et Collins Dictionnaire ...2 reviews

French & European Pubns, 2006

The Best French Dictionary
When I went for french immersion in Paris I had a horrible dictionary that was hard to read (not printed well) and the definitions were not constantly accurate and it wouldn't use examples of when to use certain words. On the contrary, this dictionary was the only one my french tutors would accept and this dictionary not only gave examples of when to use the word but it was printed very ...

A Dictionary of Symptoms3 reviews
Dr. Joan Gomez

Bantam Books, 1972

Useful
I occasionally like a fool play doctor to myself and use this book in order to see that it is not as bad as I fear it might be. In other words I use it for self- diagnosis . But too much self- diagnosis is of course a dangerous thing. This work lists the symptoms into categories which are parts of the body, head and neck, chest, skin , urinary system etc.It has a very helpful table of contents ...

A comprehensive dictionary of psychological and psychoanalytical terms: A guide to usage1 review
Horace Bidwell English

McKay, 1965

A Funny Dictionary on a Serious Subject
This is probably my favorite dictionary of all time. The authors, a husband and wife team, pepper this dictionary with lucid, funny, and irreverent commentary. An example is in the entry for "bogus erudition" which is defined as the unnecessary use of technical words when simpler words expressing the same idea are available. "It is both pretentious and naive for a writer to think that what has ...

Dic Le Larousse De Poche Dictionnaire: Noms Communs Noms Propres1 review
Larousse

Larousse Kingfisher Chambers, 1998

A sure way to advance an intermediate knowledge of French.
This dicitionary is most useful as a single source to intermediate or advanced users of French as a second language. Fluent users of the language may find this useful as a portable adjunct to other, more specific dictionaries. Beyond the English-French/French-English dictionaries is the single-language dictionary, and the LaRousse de Poche is a hefty, but still portable, reliable, and ...

The concise encyclopedia of Western philosophy and philosophers1 review
J. O Urmson

Hawthorn Books, 1960

For the PhiLOSTophers.
This book was first published in 1960 and later completely revised in 1989, my version is a reprint from 1992. As the title says it's a Concise Encyclopedia, it is about 330 pages so the entrys are short, but they are good, reasonably clear and to the point. I used this book a lot when studying Philosophy, the good thing about this Encyclopedia is that not only does it cover Philosophical ...

Robert Collins Super Senior French to English and English to French Dictionary. 2 Volumes : Le Grand Robert ...2 reviews

French & European Pubns, 2008

For the professional or fanatic amateur
Very thorough, especially with idioms. So far I've only come across one French "word" that I found in the Grand Robert but not in here: "véronal". And to call that a word is something like calling "kleenex" in English a word. It costs something, but if you're serious, it will be well worth it: it will save you lots of time.
