Things that will never be again revisited
This is a lovely read by a gentle man who felt he was really a woman in a mannish body, and also it is the story of a German who lived in parts of Germany and Berlin that are gone and will never be again. I felt a nostalgia for times past for the neighorhood around the Alexanderplatz in Berlin which used to be the gay and lower class neighborhood and also the red light district. If one goes to ...

Outrageous!
I've read the first page to a multitude of people and they simply don't know what to say. It starts off in the South Atlantic Ocean in Admiralty Bay with US Navy's "Operation Deep Freeze" with a "something" that "suddenly came roaring up out of the sea through no less than 37 feet of ice, and went on up into the sky like a vast silvery bullet(!)" I've read the first two chapter 3 times now and ...

Extremely well researched and presented.
This is and excellent book for those who are interested in the great ocean liners of the early twentieth century. It features the original articles from the trade magazine "The Shipbuilder" with beautiful photos and detailed engineering drawings of great ships like the Olympic, Titanic, Mauretania, Lusitana and many others. It's all done on high quality acid-free paper making it a long term ...

Reality Check
Zlotnik is one of the best descriptive writers to come out of the Vietnam War. He paints a word picture even the most inexperienced reader can visualize and the most experienced combat veteran will support. His attention to detail is superb and he always weaves in some kind of creature into his story that reappears in a dramatic manner. He's good.

brilliant!
Henry Beard has both a good knowledge of the original poems and of cats. His spoofs are tremendously clever, and he chooses the most common poems in English literature, so most people will recognize them. I laughed myself nearly sick. It's as good as jogging! ;-)

Wonderful
Let me just quote my favorite line from the book. It is when James Fisher, an Englishman, first sees the Grand Canyon: "I went down there a few yards. The world ended; began again eight miles away. Between the ends of the world was a chasm." Now I have never seen the Grand Canyon, but reading about it with such wonder through Mr. Fisher's eyes was extraordinary. It brought tears to my eyes. It ...

A brilliantly crafted, deeply touching and extraordinary read.
Stormjammers is a beautifully written and deeply personal look at one man's transformation from a young flyer to a hardened combat veteran and ultimately to a warrior irrevocably changed by his experiences. It's also the highest tribute to the men and women he served with. From the start of this book, all the way through to the end, I was full of feelings and emotions. Stanek's words were so ...

Most valuable resource
Even if you have several books of Islamic law, this book is extremely valuable for two main reasons. First, it outlines the positions of the major schools and the sources and reasoning they use to arrive at those positions. Second, and more importantly, Ibn Rushd (Averroes to most of his European admirers) explains the divergence of views among the schools on the basis of the different ...

Essential for understanding subtexts of Russian character
This books is an easy read - not dry or scholarly - which provides for the reader a tremendous insight into what the authors call the 'banalities,' or "confused jumble of present-day Russian 'views'," which are epitomized by the persona of Vladimir Zhirinovsky. It helps explain Russia's self-perception as a major player / power in the international arena. The book is concise, and consists of a ...

This Guide is so incredibly handy. When travelling on business I always take the Guide along to guarantee a fine dining experience for me and my clients. It has never steered me wrong that is why I've also purchased it for clients who, like me, travel often or who enjoy fine dining, fine wines, etc. Excellent resource. Impressive gift. Nothing like Zagats -- this is fine dining. The only problem ...

Busoni according to Sitsky
"Busoni and the piano" is the sort of title a Busoni fan would fall for, especially if he or she is a pianist. So I did. But aside from the hunger of specific Busoni-piano related subjects and details, I found that the author of this book is an interpreter of Busoni's personality, writing as if Busoni had been an old friend or relative of his. I must say that a lot of what Sitsky says is very ...

This book is clear and detailed, with helpful examples and complete discussions. It is an excellent companion to "Active Contours" by Blake and Isard. Wonderful supplement to History Text Books
Many elementary and high school American History Text Books continually fail to incorperate women into their male-dominated view of history. Vincent writes brief but informative bio's of America's most famous and important women. I use this book as a reference source on American Foremothers. Adults as well as children will find this book necessary to complete the true story of our nation.

Of all the books on investing that I've read over the years, this one was at once, the most pleasurable and most challanging to my own beliefs. I enjoy reading general science books by authors like Matt Ridley, who wrote Genome: The Autobiography of a Species or Bryan Sykes, who wrote Adam's Curse. The authors delve into the lives of 11 prominent Chinese-Americans scientists ...
